This study intends to combine both the management characteristics and firm’s characteristics to analyse the M&A performance. For the management characteristics, we used the CEO age and for the firm characteristics, we used the CSR score. In order to understand the M&A performance, we conducted an Event Study to predict the abnormal stock returns of the acquiring firm around the announcemen

In recent years advances in computing power, availability of large annotated datasets and AI algorithms have enabled the rise of reliable object identification and tracking. This thesis describes the development and implementation considerations of a system for object detection in the retail industry. This project have been conducted as a collaboration between ETH Zürich and start-up company AI Re

With the present thesis I aim to explore what accounts for fluctuations in capital formation and profitability in Sweden and the UK since 1950. Do expectations rule investments which in turn determine profits, or is it rather profitability that rule expectations and thus investment behaviour? Applying a finite distributed-lag model on a variety of variables, profits emerge as a reliable key factor

A large data set, consisting of 300 000 patients’ admission data to various intensive care units in Sweden, acquired from the Swedish Intensive Care Register, was used in this work. The aim was to enable accurate Length of Stay (LOS) and mortality within 30 days predictions by using feed-forward Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs). The LOS outcome was predicted as short versus long time stays, with

This research draws a parallel between the recent political backlashes witnessed in the (de)-industrialized world and people’s attitudes towards climate policies. In lieu of the rise of populism, subjective feelings induced by individuals’ perceptions of their condition have increasingly been considered by researchers. In parallel, there is a substantial literature on the determinants of public su

The observations of circumbinary planets have confirmed that these can in fact be stable. While previous studies on circumbinary planets have been done, not many have been made on systems containing multiple circumbinary planets on eccentric orbits. In this thesis, the effects a binary star system of solar mass would have on the Solar System is investigated. Using the program MERCURY, numerous int

In this thesis we investigate the application of spatial coupling in turbo equalization. We show that with spatial coupling we can have a fresh perspective on the trade-off between performance in the waterfall and error floor region often encountered in the choice of codes for turbo equalization. Describing turbo equalization in the perspective of message passing on factor graphs, we show various

Problem solving skills are highly related to later life success. Several factors can influence these skills and their development, for example the level of executive function (EF) as well as individual temperamental features. This study examined problem solving performance among young (22-60 months old) children in a cross sectional design. The aim of the study was to explore how different compone

The purpose of this study is (1) to investigate the direct influence of femvertising on female consumers’ attitudes towards the ad, brand gender perception as well as purchase intention and (2) to test the indirect effect of femvertising through attitudes towards the ad and brand gender perception on purchase intention. This study used a random independent group design, assigning the survey respon

En riktning främst representerad av Anthony Giddens & Philip W. Suttons bok Sociologi (2014)This study reviews the contrasting images of Karl Marx theoretical output and of Marxism offered by sociology courses at Swedish universities. By means of interviews with lecturing sociologists and a literature review covering the most common introductory textbooks I demonstrate some central dividing lines within sociology. One tendency is foremost represented by Anthony Giddens’ & Philip W. S

Den utvecklade algoritmen ska hjälpa användaThis report aims to examine the use and development of a more intelligent heating process in a house. By controlling switches integrated into a fuse, the techniques that can be used to allow an algorithm to predict how long the heating process would take are evaluated. Currently users have to, themselves, estimate how long the heating process will take. The algorithm developed aims to alleviate th

Timing of phenological events are highly related to climate and is one of the first signs of ecosystem responses to the climate change. Timing of flowering phenology is an important trait influencing the distribution and fitness of plants species. Tundra ecosystems are particularly important to study these effects due to short growing seasons, poor pollinator community and a particularly pronounce

Operant conditioning is a psychological theory about learning through positive and negative reinforcement which has been researched for decades. However, some fundamental components of this theory have not yet been thoroughly researched, such as its interaction with long-term retention and context. These components are essential if we want to understand how operant conditioning applies in everyday

The aim of this master thesis was to develop adaptive control for a quadrotor using Gaussian process regression (GP). Online regression with GPs can provide many benefits as it is a flexible non-linear regression model that can provide uncertainty measures of the estimate. However, online GP regression may also gives rise to problems. Because of the high numerical complexity of GPs, sparse approxi
