Exercise-induced rib stress fractures: influence of reduced bone mineral density
Exercise-induced rib stress fractures have been reported frequently in elite rowers during the past decade. The etiology of rib stress fractures is unclear, but low bone mineral density (BMD) has been suggested to be a potential risk factor for stress fractures in weight-bearing bones. The present study investigated BMD in seven Danish national team rowers with previous rib stress fracture (RSF) a

2006. Nilsson Stutz, L. Setting it Straight. A re-analysis of the Mesolithic Barum burial according to the principles of Anthropologie ‘de terrain.’
The Mesolithic burial from Barum in Northeastern Scania has long been a subject of academic controversy regarding both the age of the burial and the sex assessment of the remains. A less public discussion has taken place regarding the initial position of the body in the burial. In this article, the documentation of the burial is analyzed in detail according to the taphonomic principles of anthropo

The investigation focused on teaching the subject of aids and sex to secondary school students in grades eight through eleven. Thirteen teachers and their students, in 15 different classes, were studied and compared with a control group; altogether 548 students were included in the investigation. Approximate inverse preconditioners for some large dense random electrostatic interaction matrices
A sparse mesh-neighbour based approximate inverse preconditioner is proposed for a type of dense matrices whose entries come from the evaluation of a slowly decaying free space Green's function at randomly placed points in a unit cell. By approximating distant potential fields originating at closely spaced sources in a certain way, the preconditioner is given properties similar to, or better than,
Immune response to H-pylori heat shock protein 60 strongly correlates with chronic inflammation in gastric mucosa but not with the development of atrophy or presence of anticanalicular autoantibodies
Hand-Arm-Vibration Syndrome (HAVS): Is there a central nervous component? An fMRI study.
Hand-held vibrating tools may result in neuromuscular dysfunction and vasospastic problems of the hand. Sensory and motor dysfunction can be explained by injury to peripheral structures, but could also be due to changes in cortical somatotopic mapping of the hand in the brain. The purpose of the present study was to use functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to assess the somatotopic cortica

The impact of factor V mutation on the risk for occlusion in patients undergoing peripheral vascular reconstructions
OBJECTIVE: to determine the impact of Factor V-Leiden on the patency of peripheral vascular reconstructions. DESIGN: prospective, open and consecutive study. METHODS: a total of 775 patients, who were electively admitted between 1995 and 1997 to the vascular ward unit, were prospectively analysed for frequency of Factor V-Leiden mutation and patency of reconstruction (one month and one year). The

Crystallization and preliminary X-ray analysis of human dUTPase
Human dUTPase, expressed in Escherichia coli, has been crystallized. Single crystals were obtained by the vapour-diffusion technique using 2-propanol and PEG 4000 as precipitants. The enzyme was co-crystallized with the substrate dUTP and a metal chelator EDTA to prevent hydrolysis of the substrate. The crystals belong to the orthorombic space group P212121 with cell dimensions a = 67.51, b = 68.2

Ecological diversification in habitat use in subtidal triplefin fishes (Tripterygiidae)
Recent work has shown that habitat specialisation can lead to diversification in lacustrine and marine fish species. Here we investigate specialisation in the New Zealand triplefin fish fauna (Tripterygiidae), which has the greatest diversity and disparity of triplefin species in the world with 26 endemic species. Most species are sympatric throughout coastal New Zealand, showing no obvious latitu
Bone mineral density in patients with Crohn's disease during long-term treatment with azathioprine
OBJECTIVES: To ascertain whether patients with Crohn's disease treated with azathioprine maintained bone mineral mass better than patients treated with steroids alone. DESIGN: Retrospective study. SETTING: University Hospital of Malmo, Sweden. SUBJECTS: A total of 59 patients with ileocolonic, ileocaecal or colonic Crohn's disease. METHODS: Bone mass was assessed by dual photon X-ray absorptiometr
Multiple Sclerosis: Studies of the Interferon system and search for infectious agents
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease of the central nervous system, characterized by focal inflammatory lesions with demyelination and axonal loss. It is believed that MS is an immune-mediated disorder with both genetic and environmental contributions to the pathogenesis. Interferons (IFNs) are naturally occurring proteins known to have antiviral, antiproliferative and immunoregulatory eff
