Ecosystem structural changes controlled by altered rainfall climatology in tropical savannas
Tropical savannas comprise mixed woodland grassland ecosystems in which trees and grasses compete for water resources thereby maintaining the spatial structuring of this ecosystem. A global change in rainfall climatology may impact the structure of tropical savanna ecosystems by favouring woody plants, relative to herbaceous vegetation. Here we analysed satellite data and observed a relatively hi
Clothianidin seed-treatment has no detectable negative impact on honeybee colonies and their pathogens
Interactions between multiple stressors have been implicated in elevated honeybee colony losses. Here, we extend our landscape-scale study on the effects of placement at clothianidin seed-treated oilseed rape fields on honeybees with an additional year and new data on honeybee colony development, swarming, mortality, pathogens and immune gene expression. Clothianidin residues in pollen, nectar and

A survey of contemporary antenatal parental education in Sweden : What is offered to expectant parents and midwives’ experiences
Objective: To explore how antenatal parental education is provided in southern Sweden and midwives’ experiences of it. Methods: A cross-sectional survey with data collection from 66 antenatal clinics and 189 midwives during 2016. Descriptive and comparative statistics, chi-square and t-tests, were used to present the findings. Results: Antenatal parental education was most commonly offered in smal
Sub-lethal concentrations of heavy metals induce antibiotic resistance via mutagenesis
The emergence of antibiotic resistance is a growing problem worldwide. Numerous studies have demonstrated that heavy metals facilitate the spread of bacterial drug-resistance in the environment. However, the actions and mechanisms of metals at relatively low sub-lethal levels (far below the minimal inhibitory concentration [MIC]) on antibiotic resistance remain unclear. In this study, we investiga
Quality of life in Swedish children receiving grommets – An analysis of pre- and postoperative results based on a national quality register
Background: Otitis media with effusion (OME) and recurrent otitis media (rAOM) are two common diagnoses in childhood, both of which are treated with grommets, or ventilation tubes. It is known that affected children have a worse quality of life (QoL), and various questionnaires have been used to evaluate this. The national Swedish quality register for grommet insertions contains some QoL questions
Creating sustainable value through remanufacturing : Three industry cases
Remanufacturing is proposed as a strategy to develop circular business models to manage resource loops in the future circular economy (CE). If remanufacturing is to occupy a central role in the CE it needs to be considered from a series of complementary and synchronous business activities. Thus, the aim of this article is to investigate how such an integrated perspective can drive sustainable valu
Side-gated, enhancement mode, InAs nanowire double quantum dot devices-toward controlling transverse electric fields in spin-transport measurements
A double quantum dot system with a definitive transverse electric field in the plane of the sample is defined by combining a facile side-gating technique with enhancement mode InAs nanowires. Positive bias on the plunger gates enhance quantum dot segments along the nanowire, negative bias on barrier gates deplete regions, and situating gates biased at opposite polarities on opposing sides of the n
Deep learning for segmentation of 49 selected bones in CT scans : First step in automated PET/CT-based 3D quantification of skeletal metastases
Purpose: The aim of this study was to develop a deep learning-based method for segmentation of bones in CT scans and test its accuracy compared to manual delineation, as a first step in the creation of an automated PET/CT-based method for quantifying skeletal tumour burden. Methods: Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) were trained to segment 49 bones using manual segmentations from 100 CT scans.
Chromatographic separation of hemoglobin variants using robust molecularly imprinted polymers
Devising a robust, efficient and cost effective hemoglobin (Hb) purification strategy is one of the key challenges in the development of Hb-based blood substitutes. The aim of this study was to use molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) as a novel and efficient chromatographic resin to selectively recognize and purify different Hb variants. The results showed that the Hb-MIP material developed here
Mutation patterns in a population-based non-small cell lung cancer cohort and prognostic impact of concomitant mutations in KRAS and TP53 or STK11
Objectives: Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is a heterogeneous disease with unique combinations of somatic molecular alterations in individual patients, as well as significant differences in populations across the world with regard to mutation spectra and mutation frequencies. Here we aim to describe mutational patterns and linked clinical parameters in a population-based NSCLC cohort. Material
Steroids for Acute Vestibular Neuronitis-the Earlier the Treatment, the Better the Outcome?
OBJECTIVE: To present findings that suggest steroid treatment within 24 hours of onset of vestibular neuronitis results in better restitution of vestibular function than treatment between 25 and 72 hours. PATIENTS: Thirty-three consecutive patients (17 men, 16 women, mean age 57 yr, range 17-85 yr) with acute vestibular neuronitis and treated with steroids within 72 hours after symptom onset. Pati
Human G protein-coupled Receptor 30 (GPR30) is N -glycosylated and N-terminal Domain Asparagine 44 is Required for Receptor Structure and Activity
GPR30, or G protein-coupled estrogen receptor (GPER), is a G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) that is currently attracting considerable attention in breast cancer and cardiometabolic regulation. The receptor was reported to be a novel membrane estrogen receptor mediating rapid non-genomic responses. However, questions remain about both the cognate ligand and the subcellular localization of receptor
