Centrality dependence of the high (PT) charged hadron suppression in Au+Au collisions at root s(NN)=130 GeV

PHENIX has measured the centrality dependence of charged hadron p(T) spectra from Au +An collisions at root(s)NN = 130 GeV The truncated mean p(T) decreases with centrality for p(T) > 2 GeV/c, indicating an apparent reduction of the contribution from hard scattering to high p(T) hadrdn production. For central collisions the yield at high p(T) is shown to be suppressed compared to binary nucleon-nu

The N-terminal of thrombospondin-1 is essential for coagulase-negative staphylococcal binding

Bacterial binding was studied to determine whether thrombospondin-1 (TSP) acts as a ligand in attachment of coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS). Twenty-five of 27 CNS strains bound soluble TSP. Staphylococcus epidermidis J9P bound 125I-labelled TSP in a dose-dependent manner. Scatchard plot analysis of the binding of TSP by strain J9P revealed two Kd values of 6.4x10-95muM and 2.9x10-85muM. The

Enhanced sensory recovery after median nerve repair using cortical audio-tactile interaction. A randomised multicentre study.

The "Sensor Glove System" offers an alternate afferent inflow from the hand early after nerve repair in the forearm, mediated through the hearing sense, implying that deprivation of one sense can be compensated by another sense. This sensory "by-pass" was used early after repair of the median nerve with the intention of improving recovery of functional sensibility by maintaining an active sensory

City structure - societal driving forces and effects (in Book & Eskilsson: City structure. Why and how?)

Stadens struktur har under historiens gång påverkats av bland annat nya teknologWhy do cities appear the way they do? What are the underlying forces that contribute to its built environment and transport system? What/whom are the factors/actors that influence the ways in which the city is shaped? How can the international differences in the shape of cities be explained? The driving forces that shape the city are numerous and complex. City structure, has through the ages, been

Aspects of chronic autoimmune thyroiditis in children and adolescents

The aims of this thesis were to 1) compare different methods for detection of antibodies against thyroglobulin (TgAb) and thyroid peroxidase (TPOAb), particulary in children with chronic autoimmune thyroditis (AIT), 2) investigate if maternal enterovirus infection is a risk factor for development of AIT in offspring, 3) ascertain the prevalence of thyroid autoantibodies in cord blood sera from chi

Single molecular imaging and spectroscopy of conjugated polyelectrolytes decorated on stretched aligned DNA

DNA is the prototype template for building nanoelectronic devices by self-assembly. The electronic functions are made possible by coordinating electronic polymer chains to DNA. This paper demonstrates two methods for fabrication of aligned and ordered DNA nanowires complexed with conjugated polyelectrolytes (CPEs). The complex can be formed either in solution prior to stretching or after stretchin

Increased Echolucency of Carotid Plaques in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes.

Background and Purpose - Diabetes is associated with the presence of moderate to large atherosclerotic carotid plaques. Previous carotid ultrasound studies have associated plaques with low echogenicity with a higher risk of cerebrovascular events. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether patients with type 2 diabetes have different plaque echogenicity than do nondiabetic subjects. Methods - F

Trends in medication and health-related quality of life in a population-based rheumatoid arthritis register in Malmo, Sweden

Objectives. To study trends in treatment, health status and health-related quality of life (HRQL) in two cross-sectional surveys over a 5-yr period and in an observational follow-up sub-cohort based on a population-based rheumatoid arthritis (RA) register in Malm6, Sweden. Material and methods. A continuously updated population-based RA register was established in Malm6 city in southern Sweden in

CALIBRATION OF CHROMATOGRAPHY MODELS

AbstractThis thesis is devoted to calibration of mathematical chromatography models. Chromatography models include unknown parameters that must be determined before the models can be applied to optimization or scale-up of a chromatography process. The aim of the work presented in the thesis was to develop methods for determining these unknown model parameters. The fundamental approach adopted to de

Associated physical disease in a demented population

Clinical experience indicates that physical diseases are probably underdiagnosed in patients suffering from dementia. We investigated the prevalence of physical diseases in patients with different types of dementia by means of a retrospective patient record survey including 236 inpatients and outpatients referred for dementia evaluation to the Dementia Investigation Unit, University Hospital in Li

Impact of different forming fabric parameters on sheet solids content during vacuum dewatering

The effects of fabric parameters on paper sheet solids content during vacuum dewatering of low grammage sheets was studied by lab. equipment for 10 different forming fabrics. Caliper, void vol., and air permeability that control the capacity of the fabric to enclose water within the fabric were shown to have a great impact on the dewatering of the sheet. Rewetting from fabric to sheet seemed to be

Uncertainties and recommendations

An assessment of the impacts of changes in climate and UV-B radiation on Arctic terrestrial ecosystems, made within the Arctic Climate Impacts Assessment (ACIA), highlighted the profound implications of projected warming in particular for future ecosystem services, biodiversity and feedbacks to climate. However, although our current understanding of ecological processes and changes driven by clima

Rheumatological manifestations, organ damage and autoimmunity in hereditary C2 deficiency.

Objective. To analyse rheurnatological manifestations, organ damage and autoimmune responses in a large cohort of patients (n = 45) with homozygous C2 deficiency (C2D) and long-term follow-up. Methods. Medical records were reviewed and were supplemented with a mailed questionnaire for assessment of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors. Organ damage was evaluated using the Systemic Lupus Inter

The popliteal artery, an unusual muscular artery with wall properties similar to the aorta: Implications for susceptibility to aneurysm formation?

Objective. The popliteal artery is, after the aorta, the most common site for aneurysm formation. Why the popliteal artery is more susceptible than other peripheral muscular arteries is unknown. An important factor may be differences in arterial wall composition as compared with other peripheral muscular arteries, which in turn affect wall properties. These are however unknown. We studied the mech

The 5 angstrom structure of heterologously expressed plant aquaporin SoPIP2;1

SoPIP2;1 is one of the major integral proteins in spinach leaf plasma membranes. In the Xenopus oocyte expression system its water channel activity is regulated by phosphorylation at the C terminus and in the first cytosolic loop. To assess its structure, SoPIP2;1 was heterologously expressed in Pichia pastoris as a His-tagged protein and in the non-tagged form. Both forms were reconstituted into
