A simple and effective procedure for the refinement of surface structure in LEED

A simple and effective procedure is described for the determination of the best-fit parameters of a given model of a surface structure by analysis of low energy electron diffraction (LEED) intensities. The procedure involves a nonlinear minimisation of chi(2) for the comparison of experimental and calculated intensities as a function of the parameters of the model structure. The minimisation is ca

Genetic characterization of malignant melanoma and breast cancer

Malignant melanoma and breast cancer are common malignant diseases characterized by considerable heterogeneity with respect to genetics, histopathology, biology and clinical course. In breast cancer, two major susceptibility genes have been identified, BRCA1 and BRCA2, which account for a significant proportion of high-risk breast cancer families. Breast tumors arising in BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation c

A Model Based Approach to Robustness Analysis and Optimisation of Chromatography Processes

En mOne of the major issues in the pharmaceutical industry today is the cost of development and validation of the production of the active pharmaceutical ingredients. The development, optimization and validation of a production plant have been dominated by an extensive experimental approach. The large amount of experimental work and reluctance for changing existing processes has caused the pharmaceut

The Effect of Transfer Port Geometry on Scavenge Flow Velocities At High Engine Speed

2-D LDV measurements were performed on two different cylinder designs in a fired two-stroke engine running with wide-open throttle at 9000 rpm. The cylinders examined were one with open transfer channels and one with cup handle transfer channels. Optical access to the cylinder was achieved by removing the silencer and thereby gain optical access through the exhaust port. No addition of seeding wa

Studies on Neuropsychiatric Manifestations and Genetic Factors in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

Background: Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease encompassing a wide range of symptoms that can emanate from pathology in virtually any organ system. Severe SLE includes involvement of the central nervous system and kidneys. One of the hallmarks of the disease is a multitude of autoantibodies, indicating a breakdown in self tolerance. The corresponding antigens have been fou

"Distributed proton radiation therapy'' - A new concept for advanced competence support

The increased interest in high precision radiation therapy is to a large extent driven by the potential of modern imaging technology. The aim of this project was to analyse how an expensive proton facility best could support a multi-centre health care system. We have developed a model for distributed expert collaboration where all clinical experts will work close to their patients in regional cent

Compression Ratio Influence on Maximum Load of a Natural Gas Fueled HCCI Engine

This paper discusses the compression ratio influence on maximum load of a Natural Gas HCCI engine. A modified Volvo TD100 truck engine is controlled in a closed-loop fashion by enriching the Natural Gas mixture with Hydrogen. The first section of the paper illustrates and discusses the potential of using hydrogen enrichment of natural gas to control combustion timing. Cylinder pressure is used as

Staphylococcal enterotoxin H induces V alpha-specific expansion of T cells.

Staphylococcal enterotoxin H (SEH) is a bacterial superantigen secreted by Staphylococcus aureus. Superantigens are presented on the MHC class II and activate large amounts of T cells by cross-linking APC and T cells. In this study, RT-PCR was used to show that SEH stimulates human T cells via the V domain of TCR, in particular V10 (TRAV27), while no TCR V-specific expansion was seen. This is in s

System failure, innovation policy and patents: Fuel cells and related hydrogen technology in Norway 1990-2002

The empirical focus of this article is technological innovation activities in the emerging field of fuel cells and related hydrogen technology in Norway from 1990 to 2002. In this period, four comparatively large-scale research and development projects and a number of smaller projects aimed at development of fuel cells technology were undertaken, resulting in many inventions that were subsequently

Defect engineering in Czochralski silicon by electron irradiation at different temperatures

Infrared absorption studies of defect formation in Czochralski silicon irradiated with fast electrons in a wide range of temperatures (80-900 K) have been performed. The samples with different contents of oxygen (O-16, O-18) and carbon (C-12, C-13) isotopes were investigated, The main defect reactions are found to depend strongly on irradiation temperature and dose, as well as on impurity content

Determination of moisture permeability in concrete under high moisture conditions

With a method relying on measurements of the flow of water vapour from a specimen and measurements of the distribution of the relative humidity in the specimen at steady state conditions, the moisture permeability can be calculated and its dependence on the relative humidity can be determined. The specimens are of dimensions that are used in ordinary buildings.

MR imaging of spinal neurofibromatosis

The MR findings in 7 patients with neurofibromatosis involving the spine were evaluated. Six patients had paraspinal tumors at multiple levels. In 4 they were bilateral. Five patients had multiple intraspinal lesions, frequently with growth through the neural foramen. In one patient paraspinal tumors were found in the lumbar sacral plexus and in another bony dysplasia and meningoceles but no tumor

Post-transfusion hepatitis type non-A, non-B in southern Sweden: occurrence and clinical significance

Two prospective studies of the occurrence and clinical significance of post-transfusion hepatitis non-A, non-B were performed in Malmo, Sweden. In both studies, patients of a broad clinical spectrum were followed up 6 and 12 weeks after transfusion. In a 7 week study from 1983, hepatitis non-A, non-B occurred in 9/173 transfused patients (5.2%) versus 1/203 untransfused controls (0.5%) (p less tha
