Elastic Net Regularized Logistic Regression using Cubic Majorization

In this work, a coordinate solver for elastic net regularized logistic regression is proposed. In particular, a method based on majorization maximization using a cubic function is derived. This to reliably and accurately optimize the objective function at each step without resorting to line search. Experiments show that the proposed solver is comparable to, or improves, state-of-the-art solvers. T

Integrating fluvial processes into the global Si cycle

Både upptag och vittring av kisel bidrar till att fördelningSilicon (Si) is ubiqutious in natural waters as dissolved silica (DSi) and is used as a nutrient by many plant and animal species. DSi ultimately derives from the weathering of silicate minerals, a process which also consumes atmospheric CO2 and couples the silicon and carbon cycles. These processes, among others, impart observable fractionations to the stable isotopes of silicon, which makes the

The tumour suppressor SOX11 is associated with improved survival among high grade epithelial ovarian cancers and is regulated by reversible promoter methylation

Background: The neural transcription factor SOX11 has been described as a prognostic marker in epithelial ovarian cancers (EOC), however its role in individual histological subtypes and tumour grade requires further clarification. Furthermore, methylation-dependent silencing of SOX11 has been reported for B cell lymphomas and indicates that epigenetic drugs may be used to re-express this tumour su

Cancer-Associated Fibroblasts Expressing CXCL14 Rely upon NOS1-Derived Nitric Oxide Signaling for Their Tumor-Supporting Properties

Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAF) stimulate tumor growth and metastasis. Signals supporting CAF function are thus emerging as candidate therapeutic targets in the tumor microenvironment. The chemokine CXCL14 is a potent inducer of CAF protumorigenic functions. This study is aimed at learning how the protumoral functions of CXCL14-expressing CAF are maintained. We found that the nitric oxide synt

Whole grain rye intake, reflected by a biomarker, is associated with favorable blood lipid outcomes in subjects with the metabolic syndrome - a randomized study.

Few studies have explored the possible plasma cholesterol lowering effects of rye consumption. The aim of this secondary analysis in the SYSDIET study was to investigate the association between plasma alkylresorcinols (AR), a biomarker for whole grain wheat and rye intake, and blood lipid concentrations in a population with metabolic syndrome. Furthermore, we analyzed the associations between the

Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy in a partially premixed turbulent jet flame

A new approach for studying mixing and combustion phenomena in turbulent partially premixed flames using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is demonstrated. Setting the laser pulse energy just above the breakdown threshold in the cold gas allows statistical data to be obtained concerning the probability of finding cold or hot gas inside the measurement volume. Moreover, a compositional an

Effect of Natural and Semisynthetic Pseudoguianolides on the Stability of NF-κB:DNA Complex Studied by Agarose Gel Electrophoresis.

The nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) is a promising target for drug discovery. NF-κB is a heterodimeric complex of RelA and p50 subunits that interact with the DNA, regulating the expression of several genes; its dysregulation can trigger diverse diseases including inflammation, immunodeficiency, and cancer. There is some experimental evidence, based on whole cells studies, that natural sesquiterpene lac

The Social Process of Escalation: A Promising Focus for Crisis Management Research

Background This study identifies a promising, new focus for the crisis management research in the health care domain. After reviewing the literature on health care crisis management, there seems to be a knowledge-gap regarding organisational change and adaption, especially when health care situations goes from normal, to non-normal, to pathological and further into a state of emergency or crisis.

Xanthoparmelia lineola s. l. in Australia and North America

Populations previously included in Xanthoparmelia lineola and X. digitiformis from Australia and North America have been investigated using ITS rDNA sequences, chemistry and morphology and have been compared with possible related species. The new species, Xanthoparmelia knudsenii Elix, A. Thell & Søchting is described and the new combination Xanthoparmelia rimalis (Kurok.) Elix, A. Thell &

New product from old reaction: uniform magnetite nanoparticles from iron-mediated synthesis of alkali iodides and their protection from leaching in acidic media

Iron-mediated synthesis of alkali metal iodides was quite unexpectedly demonstrated to be able to serve as a cost-efficient and reliable source of spherical single crystalline near-stoichiometric magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles as revealed by TEM and XRD studies and also by XANES spectroscopic quantification of the Fe2+-content. Using the particles as nuclei for the Stoeber synthesis of silica nan

Functional and genetic characterization of the non-lysosomal glucosylceramidase 2 as a modifier for Gaucher disease

Background: Gaucher disease (GD) is the most common inherited lysosomal storage disorder in humans, caused by mutations in the gene encoding the lysosomal enzyme glucocerebrosidase (GBA1). GD is clinically heterogeneous and although the type of GBA1 mutation plays a role in determining the type of GD, it does not explain the clinical variability seen among patients. Cumulative evidence from recent

ELUCIDATING REGULATORY NETWORKS PROMOTING B-CELL DEVELOPMENT

A network of transcription factors together with external signals facilitate the gradual developmental progression from progenitor cells towards the B-cell fate. Several key factors participating in this network have been identified. Among these are the transcription factors E2A, HEB, EBF1 and FOXO1 as well as the IL7 signaling cascade.
