Platelet aggregation on peritoneal tube grafts and double velour grafts in the inferior vena cava of the pig
In 14 pigs the infrarenal vena cava was replaced with a peritoneal tube graft or a collagen-coated double velour graft. With 111In-labelled platelets dynamic in vivo imaging of platelet aggregation over the graft was carried out using a scintillation camera. After removal, the grafts were examined by autoradiography for an evaluation of the platelet aggregation pattern. Measurements of activity in
SpeB modulates fibronectin-dependent internalization of Streptococcus pyogenes by efficient proteolysis of cell-wall-anchored protein F1.
SpeB is a cysteine proteinase and virulence determinant secreted by the important human pathogen Streptococcus pyogenes. Recent investigations have suggested a role for SpeB in streptococcal entry into human cells. However, conflicting data concerning the contribution of SpeB to internalization have been presented. Protein F1 is a cell-wall-attached fibronectin (Fn)-binding protein that is present
Multisystemic therapy project in Sweden: what factors affect the tendency of social workers to refer subjects to the research project?
This article examines some of the factors that may have affected the tendency for social workers to refer adolescents to a randomised controlled study of multisystemic therapy (MST). If we are to improve integration between researchers and the clinical setting in the future, it is important to consider those factors that affect implementation of research projects and evidence-based treatment metho
The added value of ECG-gating for the diagnosis of myocardial infarction using myocardial perfusion scintigraphy and artificial neural networks
To assess the value of ECG-gating for the diagnosis of myocardial infarction using myocardial perfusion scintigraphy (MPS) and an artificial neural network. A total of 422 patients referred for MPS were studied using a one day Tc-99m-tetrofosmin protocol. Adenosine stress combined with submaximal dynamic exercise was used. The images were interpreted by one of three experienced clinicians and thes

Sensitivity of African biomes to changes in the precipitation regime
Aim Africa is identified by the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) as the least studied continent in terms of ecosystem dynamics and climate variability. The aim of this study was (1) to adapt the Lund-Postdam-Jena-GUESS (LPJ-GUESS) ecological modelling framework to Africa by providing new parameter values for tropical plant functional types (PFT), and (2) to assess the sensitivity
Risk preferences regarding multiple fatalities and some implications for societal risk decision making-an empirical study
Risk preferences related to accidents or other situations involving the possibility of multiple fatalities were studied in 87 persons in Sweden belonging to two separate groups with professional or educational knowledge of risk- and crisis-management issues. Use was made of a tradeoff method, the results obtained consisting of von Neuman-Morgenstern utility functions over the range of 0-1000 fatal
On Hieracium incurrens (Asteraceae) and similar species in central Sweden.
Hieracium incurrens Saelan ex Norrl., originally described from Finland, has been reported from Sweden several times and independently by different authors. Still, however, its presence in Sweden has remained dubious and it has become obvious that the different reports are referable to different taxa and the name has thus been, at least partially, misapplied. In the present study, all Swedish mate
Model of pleural fluid turnover
A model of pleural fluid turnover, based on mass conservation law, was developed from experimental evidence that 1) pleural fluid filters through the parietal pleura and is drained by parietal lymphatics and 2) lymph flow increases after an increase in pleural liquid volume, attaining a maximum value 10 times greater than control. From the differential equation describing the time evolution of ple
UV-B as an environmental factor in plant life: stress and regulation
Recent studies indicate that increasing solar UV-B is not merely an environmental stress for plants. Solar UV-B can cause plant morphogenetic effects, which can, in turn, modify the architecture of plants and the structure of a vegetation, In addition, UV-B radiation affect the production of various secondary metabolites (such as flavonoids, tannins and lignin) with important physiological and eco
Exploration of the extracellular space by a large-scale secretion screen in the early Xenopus embryo
Secreted proteins playa crucial role in intercellular communication during embryogenesis and in the adult. We recently described a novel method, designated as secretion cloning, that allows identifying extracellular proteins exclusively based on their ability to be secreted by transfected cells. In this paper, we present the results of a large-scale screening of more than 90,000 clones from three

Role of the Gly460Trp polymorphism of the alpha-adducin gene in primary hypertension in Scandinavians
Previous studies have suggested that the Trp460 allele of the Gly460Trp polymorphism in the alpha-adducin gene is associated with salt sensitivity and primary hypertension. The present study was undertaken to evaluate if the Trp460 allele of this polymorphism is associated with primary hypertension in Scandinavians. To address this issue, 294 patients with primary hypertension and 265 normotensive

Pain relief and safety after major surgery A prospective study of epidural and intravenous analgesia in 2696 patients.
Hormone-sensitive lipase null mice exhibit signs of impaired insulin sensitivity whereas insulin secretion is intact.
Lipid metabolism plays an important role in glucose homeostasis under normal and pathological conditions. In adipocytes, skeletal muscle, and pancreatic beta-cells, lipids are mobilized from acylglycerides by the hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL). Here, the consequences of a targeted disruption of the HSL gene for glucose homeostasis were examined. HSL null mice were slightly hyperglycemic in the fas

II: Properties of Diatomic and Triatomic Molecules. A theoretical study of the X 6Σ+, A 6Σ+, and 6Δ states of CrH
Results are presented from a theoretical study of the X6‡+, A6‡+ and 6j electronic states of CrH using multiconfiguration second-order perturbation theory in the multi-state formalism (MS-CASPT2). It is shown that the results for the spectroscopic constants and radiative lifetimes for the A state are in agreement with experiment and an earlier multireference configuration interaction study only if
