Physiotherapy group treatment for patients with fibromyalgia - an embodied learning process

Purpose : To study how patients with fibromyalgia (FM) experienced physiotherapy group treatment comprising pool exercise and education. Method : Nineteen patients with FM were interviewed and the transcribed interviews were analysed using a phenomenological life-world approach. The participants' mean age was 45 years and their mean symptom duration was 10 years. Results : Physiotherapy group trea

Contaminated sediment as a source of PCBs in a river system

The transport of PCBs (Aroclor 1242) in a river system in southern Sweden was governed by outflow from sediment in a 26-ha contaminated lake. Experiments in the lake revealed that 14 g PCBs/d escaped from the sediment, while sedimentation was 3 g PCB/d. Volatilization of PCBs from the lake surface was 0.02 g/d, which was considerably higher than the atmospheric fallout . The majority of the sedime

Ab initio potential-energy surface and rovibrational states of the HCN-HCl complex

A four-dimensional intermolecular potential-energy surface has been calculated for the HCN-HCl complex, with the use of the coupled cluster method with single and double excitations and noniterative inclusion of triples. Data for more than 13 000 geometries were represented by an angular expansion in terms of coupled spherical harmonics; the dependence of the expansion coefficients on the intermol

Logistics in the Oresund region after the bridge

The paper is based on a joint research project between Lund University and Copenhagen Business School. The main research question is: Can the Oresund region position itself as a leading logistics centre in Scandinavia in light of the new conditions created by the bridge? The purpose is to create a fundamental understanding of the new logistics conditions in the Oresund region by identifying driver

Amperometric Biosensor For Ethanol Based On A Phenothiazine Derivative Modified Carbon Paste Electrode

A new amperometric biosensor for ethanol, based on carbon paste electrode modified with alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH), polyethylenimine (PEI) and using a phenothiazine derivative (DDDP; 16H,18H-dibenzo[c,1]7,9-dithia-16,18-diazapentacene) as redox mediator for NADH recycling, was developed. The biosensor response is the result of mediated oxidation of NADH, generated in the enzymatic reaction betwee

Application of supercritical carbon dioxide for the extraction of alkylresorcinols from rye bran

The use of supercritical CO, (SC-CO2) for extracting alkylresorcinols from rye bran was investigated. For pure SC-CO2, 35 MPa and 55 degrees C were used. SC-CO2 with 10% ethanol or methanol as co-solvents was tested at four pressure levels (8, 15, 30 and 35 MPa) and two temperatures (40 and 55 degrees C). Experiments were conducted at a constant SC-CO2 flow of 5 g/min for 2 h. For comparative purp

A new Certified Reference Material for radionuclides in Irish sea sediment (IAEA-385)

A new Certified Reference Material (CRM) for radionuclides in sediment (IAEA-385) is described and the results of the certification process are presented. Eleven radionuclides (K-40, Cs-137, Ra-226, Ra-228, Th-230, Th-232, U-234, U-238, Pu-238, Pu239+240 and Am-241) have been certified and information mass activities with 95% confidence intervals are given for seven other radionuclides (Sr-90, Pb-

Frequency selective structures with stochastic deviations

This paper deals with the performance of frequency selective structures with defects. A frequency selective structure is in this case a periodic pattern of apertures in a conducting plate. The plate can be of arbitrary thickness. The defects can be due to deviations in the placing of the apertures, in the material parameters, or in the shape of the apertures. First, the perturbation to the far fie

Using simulation to visualise and analyse product-process dependencies in software development projects

The core element of the PROFES improvement methodology is the concept of product-process dependency (PPD) models. The purpose of PPD models is to help focus process improvement activities to those development technologies and processes that are most effective with regards to achieving specific customer-defined product quality goals. This paper describes how system dynamics simulation models can be

Proteomic studies in animal models of diabetes

The aim of this review is to provide an overview of proteomic studies in animal models of diabetes and to give some insight into the different methods available today in the rapidly developing field of proteomics. A summary of 31 papers published between 1997 and 2007 is presented. For instance, proteomics has been used to study the development of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, diabetic complica

Electron ratchet effect in semiconductor devices and artificial materials with broken centrosymmetry

Studies on nonlinear electron transport in nanometer-sized semiconductor devices with broken centrosymmetry are reviewed. In these devices, an applied alternating (rocking) electric field induces a net flow of electrons in the direction perpendicular to that of the applied field. Such an electron ratchet effect has been observed in a number of differently designed devices, fabricated from two type

BTKbase, mutation database for X-linked agammaglobulinemia (XLA)

X-linked agammaglobulinemia (XLA) is an immunodeficiency caused by mutations in the gene coding for Bruton's agammaglobulinemia tyrosine kinase (BTK). A database (BTKbase) of BTK mutations has been compiled and the recent update lists 463 mutation entries from 406 unrelated families showing 303 unique molecular events, In addition to mutations, the database also lists variants or polymorphisms. Ea

"Shim pulses" for NMR spectroscopy and imaging

A way to use adiabatic radiofrequency pulses and modulated magnetic-field gradient pulses, together constituting a "shim pulse," for NMR spectroscopy and imaging is demonstrated. These pulses capitalize on phase shifts derived from probe gradient coils to compensate for nonlinear intrinsic main magnetic field homogeneity for spectroscopy, as well as for deviations from linear gradients for imaging

Characterization of two recombinant PDE3 (cGMP-inhibited cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase) isoforms, RcGIP1 and HcGIP2, expressed in NIH 3006 murine fibroblasts and Sf9 insect cells

cDNAs encoding PDE3 [cGMP-inhibited cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase (cGI PDE)] isoforms, cGIP1 and cGIP2, have been cloned from rat (R) and human (H) cDNA libraries. The deduced amino acid sequences of RcGIP1 and HcGIP2 are very similar in their conserved catalytic domains but differ in their N-terminal regulatory domains [Meacci, E., et al. (1992) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 89, 3721-3725;

Forecasting and evaluation of traffic safety impacts: driving assistance systems against road infrastructure measures

The authors examine the use of a one-variable first-order grey model ( GM( 1,1)), to model and forecast the trend of the level of cumulative traffic accident severity for strategic scenarios for implementation of driving assistance systems, physical infrastructure redesign and combinations of the two categories of measures. The accident severity levels ( in terms of fatalities and hospitalisations

Global dissipative solutions of the Camassa-Holm equation

This paper is devoted to the continuation of solutions to the Camassa-Holm equation after wave breaking. By introducing a new set of independent and dependent variables, the evolution problem is rewritten as a semilinear hyperbolic system in an L-infinity space, containing a non-local source term which is discontinuous but has bounded directional variation. For a given initial condition, the Cauch

Reduction of atrial fibrillation burden by atrial overdrive pacing: experience with an improved algorithm to reduce early recurrences of atrial fibrillation

Two independent studies have revealed a potential limitation of post-mode switch overdrive pacing (PMOP), which is its delayed start. We conducted a prospective, randomized, single blind, crossover design study (the post-long pause overdrive pacing study) to test the efficacy of an improved version of PMOP (PMOPenhanced). A total of 45 patients were enrolled, of whom 41 were analysed. The median n
