Balancing Potential and Risk: The Living Lab Approach in Mobile Participation Research

Living labs as a research approach have been said to hold many promises regarding the evaluation of state-of-the art technologies in real-world contexts, for instance by allowing close cooperation with various stakeholders. At the same time, a living lab approach is connected with substantial complexity and increased risk. This paper elaborates on a conducted living lab with the objective to explo

An alternative biomarker-based approach for the prediction of proteins known to sensitize the respiratory tract

Many natural and industrial proteins are known to have properties that can result in type I hypersensitivity, however, to date, no validated test system exists that can predict the sensitizing potential of these allergens. Thus, the objective of this study was to develop a protocol based on the myeloid cell-based Genomic Allergen Rapid Detection (GARD) assay that can be used to assess and predict

Laser diagnostics and chemical kinetic analysis of PAHs and soot in co-flow partially premixed flames using diesel surrogate and oxygenated additives of n-butanol and DMF

Effects of oxygenated fuels on soot reduction strongly depend on the base fuel. Interesting candidates from oxygenated fuels in this respect include both n-butanol and 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF), because they have already been used in diesel engines recently. However, information is rather limited on n-butanol and DMF added into a diesel fuel surrogate in fundamental flames to investigate the mechani

Modeling the security risk management process in higher education institutions to understand, explain and improve

Security in organizations is no longer just a matter of having locks and alarms; it is more like a question of different dimensions of rules, perceptions and actions. The focus must return to more interpersonal relationships in security issues instead of technically advanced equipment. In facing today’s challenges, the focus must be on more interpersonal relationships in security issues than on te

Democratic Innovations: Reinforcing or Changing Perceptions of Trust?

Declining trust in representative institutions is considered one of the most significant political problems of our time. It is often suggested that democratic innovations—or mechanisms which aim to increase and deepen citizen participation in the political decision-making process—can help reverse this trend. However, empirical research about actual effects of participation on trust is scarce, and

Increasing the density of modes in an optical frequency comb by cascaded four-wave mixing in a nonlinear optical fiber

Here, it is shown that when two optical frequency combs with identical mode spacing but different offset frequencies copropagate through a nonlinear optical fiber, four-wave mixing between them generates new modes. Although the spacings between the new modes depend on the difference of the offset frequencies, they appear irregular because of the large number of possible four-wave-mixing processes.

Ion Migration Heals Trapping Centers in CH3NH3PbBr3 Perovskite

We investigate the local changes in photophysics at different microregions of a methylammonium lead bromide (MAPbBr3) perovskite crystal under illumination. Our results show that the emission from the structurally homogeneous region is blue-shifted compared to the emission from the inhomogeneous regions. The yield and spectrum of the emission from the structurally homogeneous region do not vary wi

Molecular properties of astaxanthin in water/ethanol solutions from computer simulations

Astaxanthin (AXT) is a reference model of xanthophyll carotenoids, which is used in medicine and food industry, and has potential applications in nanotechnology. Because of its importance, there is a great interest in understanding its molecular properties and aggregation mechanism in water and mixed solvents. In this paper, we report a novel model of AXT for molecular dynamics simulation. The mod

Molecular distortions and chemical bonding of a large π-conjugated molecule on a metal surface

Normal incidence x-ray standing wave experiments and density functional theory reveal that 3,4,9,10-perylene-tetracarboxylic-dianhydride chemisorbs on Ag(111) in a nonplanar but vertically distorted configuration. The carboxylic O atoms are 0.18±0.03 Å closer to the surface than the perylene core. The distortion is related to weak, local bonds between carboxylic O atoms and the Ag surface which ar

Combustion characteristics of well-dispersed boron submicroparticles and plasma effect

Boron is an attractive high-energy fuel additive. But it could not burn efficiently in practical systems due to its high ignition temperature and slow burning velocity. Finding methods to enhance the combustion of boron is desired. This work focused on the combustion characteristics of boron submicroparticles with and without plasma discharges in a hot environment supported by CH4/N2/O2 flat flame

Different emissive states in the bulk and at the surface of methylammonium lead bromide perovskite revealed by two-photon micro-spectroscopy and lifetime measurements

Two photon photoluminescence (2PPL) from single crystals of methyl ammonium lead bromide (CH3NH3PbBr3, MAPbBr3) is studied. We observe two components in the 2PPL spectra, which we assign to the photoluminescence (PL) from the carrier recombination at the band edge and the recombination due to self-trapping of excitons. The PL Stokes shift of self-trapped excitons is about 100 meV from the band-ga

Pluvial, urban flood mechanisms and characteristics – Assessment based on insurance claims

Pluvial flooding is a problem in many cities and for city planning purpose the mechanisms behind pluvial flooding are of interest. Previous studies seldom use insurance claim data to analyse city scale characteristics that lead to flooding. In the present study, two long time series (∼20 years) of flood claims from property owners have been collected and analysed in detail to investigate the mecha

Achilles tendon compositional and structural properties are altered after unloading by botox

Tendon function and homeostasis rely on external loading. This study investigates the biological mechanisms behind tendon biomechanical function and how the mechanical performance is affected by reduced daily loading. The Achilles tendons of 16 weeks old female Sprague Dawley rats (n = 40) were unloaded for 5 weeks by inducing muscle paralysis with botulinum toxin injections in the right gastrocne

Fall-related mortality in southern Sweden : a multiple cause of death analysis, 1998-2014

OBJECTIVES: To investigate temporal trend in fall mortality among adults (aged ≥20 years) in southern Sweden using multiple cause of death data.METHODS: We examined all death certificates (DCs, n=2 01 488) in adults recorded in the Skåne region during 1998-2014. We identified all fall deaths using International Statistical Classification of Diseases (ICD)-10 codes (W00-W19) and calculated the mort
