Health-related quality of life in family members of patients with an advanced cancer diagnosis: A one-year prospective study

Background: Receiving a cancer diagnosis affects family members as well as the person diagnosed. Family members often provide support for the sick person in daily life out of duty and love, and may not always think of their own vulnerability to illness. To individualise support for them, family members who are most at risk for becoming ill must be identified. The aim of this study was to investiga

High plasma concentrations of autoantibodies against native peptide 210 of apoB-100 are related to less coronary atherosclerosis and lower risk of myocardial infarction

Aims We examined whether antibodies against peptides 45 and 210 of apoB-100 are related to myocardial infarction (MI) and severity of coronary atherosclerosis. Methods and results Three hundred and eighty-seven survivors of a first MI (aged < 60 years) and 387 sex- and age-matched controls were characterized in detail. IgG and IgM autoantibodies against native and malondialdehyde (MDA)-modified pe

Intrinsic Ligand Effect Governing the Catalytic Activity of Pd Oxide Thin Films

High-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and density functional theory calculations have been combined to study methane oxidation over Pd(100). The measurements reveal a high activity when a two-layer PdO(101) oriented film is formed. Although a one-layer PdO(101) film exhibits a similar surface structure, no or very little activity is observed. The calculations show that

Unsymmetrical alkyne binding to a triruthenium centre: Oxidative-addition of diphenyl ditelluride to the furyne cluster [Ru-3(CO)(7)(mu-H)(mu(3)-eta(2)-C4H2O){mu-P(C4H3O)(2)}(mu-dppm)]

Oxidative-addition of PhTe2Ph to the furyne cluster [Ru-3(CO)(7)(mu-H)(mu(3)-eta(2)-C4H2O){mu-P(C4H3O)(2)}(mu-dppm)] (1) results in the isolation of four complexes; (i) the previously reported 54-electron cluster [Ru-3(CO)(6)(mu(3)-Te)(2)(mu-TePh)(2)(mu-dppm)] (5) which results from elimination of trifuryl phosphine, (ii) the furenyl cluster [Ru-3(CO)(5)(mu-eta(2)-C4H3O){mu-P(C4H3O)(2)}(mu-TePh)(2

Genetic Variations in Sex Steroid-Related Genes as Predictors of Serum Estrogen Levels in Men

Context: The risk of many conditions, including prostate cancer, breast cancer, and osteoporosis, is associated with serum levels of sex steroids. Objective: The aim of the study was to identify genetic variations in sex steroid-related genes that are associated with serum levels of estradiol (E2) and/or testosterone in men. Design: Genotyping of 604 single nucleotide polymorphisms in 50 sex stero

Death (in the Eye) of the Beholder : An Encounter with Victorian Post-mortem Photography

This article deals with the earliest version of post-mortem photography concentrating on the effects of such pictures on the present-day viewer. The encounter with these artefacts begins from a phenomenological point of view as I try to describe my personal experience of coming face to face with the image. I claim that the relation between the perceiver and the photograph does not just simply chan

Urachal signet-cell adenocarcinoma

This report presents two cases of urachal signet-cell adenocarcinoma (USCA). Two men, aged 53 and 51 years, presented with haematuria. Cystoscopy showed tumours in the dome of the bladder and transurethral resection revealed signet ring cell carcinoma. They both underwent cystoprostatectomy but died of metastatic disease after 14 and 26 months. USCA is a very rare tumour with poor prognosis. Only

Quinoa starch granules: a candidate for stabilising food-grade Pickering emulsions.

BACKGROUND: Particle-stabilised emulsions, so-called Pickering emulsions, are known to possess many beneficial properties, including being extremely stable. Starch granules isolated from quinoa have been used as emulsion stabilising particles. The granules were intact, 1-3 µm in diameter and modified with octenyl succinic anhydride to increase their hydrophobicity. Starch granules, as opposed to m

Framtidskunskap i cirkulation : Gösta Ehrensvärds diagnos och den svenska framtidsdebatten, 1971-1972

This article examines how knowledge of an impending collapse of modern industrial civilization circulated in Swedish society during the early 1970s. The point of departure is the Swedish biochemist Gösta Ehrensvärd’s (1910–1980) short book Före – efter: En diagnos (Before – After: A Diagnosis). In this book Ehrensvärd argued that the technologically advanced societies of the early 1970s would soon

Fire incidents during construction work of tunnels - evacuation aspects

The report focuses on evacuation aspects at tunnel construction sites. An introduction provides a framework on what determines the outcome of an evacuation, i.e. the physical environment and management aspects. Analyses of the evacuation conditions for several fire scenarios are performed using a combined smoke spread and evacuation model developed as a part of the project. Finally, general recomm

Crystal Phase-Dependent Nanophotonic Resonances in InAs Nanowire Arrays

Nanostructures have many material, electronic, and optical properties that are not found in bulk systems and that are relevant for technological applications. For example, nanowires realized from III-V semiconductors can be grown into wurtzite crystal structure. This crystal structure does not naturally exist in bulk where these materials form the zinc-blende counterpart. Being able to concomitant

Living with companion animals after stroke: experiences of older people in community and primary care nursing.

Older people often have companion animals, and the significance of animals in human lives should be considered by nurses-particularly in relation to older people's health, which can be affected by diseases. The incidence of stroke increases with age and disabilities as a result of stroke are common. This study aimed to explore older people's experiences of living with companion animals after strok

Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Loss of Cultured Rat Myenteric Neurons - Role of AMP-Activated Protein Kinase.

Intestinal barrier function is vital for homeostasis. Conditions where the mucosal barrier is compromised lead to increased plasma content of lipopolysaccharide (LPS). LPS acts on Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and initiates cellular inflammatory responses. TLR4 receptors have been identified on enteric neurons and LPS exposure causes neuronal loss, counteracted by vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP)

TiO2 chemical vapor deposition on Si(111) in ultrahigh vacuum: Transition from interfacial phase to crystalline phase in the reaction limited regime

The interaction between the metal organic precursor molecule titanium(IV) isopropoxide (TTIP) and three different surfaces has been studied: Si(111)-(7 x 7), SiOx/Si(111) and TiO2. These surfaces represent the different surface compositions encountered during TTIP mediated TiO2 chemical vapor deposition on Si(111). The surface chemistry of the titanium(IV) isopropoxide precursor and the film growt

On the Possibility of Uphill Intramolecular Electron Transfer in Multicopper Oxidases: Electrochemical and Quantum Chemical Study of Bilirubin Oxidase

The catalytic cycle of multicopper oxidases (MCOs) involves intramolecular electron transfer (IET) from the Cu-T1 copper ion, which is the primary site of the one-electron oxidations of the substrate, to the trinuclear copper cluster (TNC), which is the site of the four-electron reduction of dioxygen to water. In this study we report a detailed characterization of the kinetic and electrochemical p

Pressurized liquid extraction as a green approach in food and herbal plants extraction: A review.

Pressurized liquid extraction is a "green" technology for the extraction of nutraceuticals from foods and herbal plants.
