Nordisk språkförståelse idag

The chapter gives a short description of the INS-investigation, its methods and results. The investigation tested 1800 pupils in secondary education in the three Scandinavian languages and English. The results show that youngsters in the Nordic countries are better at understanding English than their neighbouring languages. The results also indicate a deterioration in the comprehension of neighbou

SAR-ISAR Blending Using Compressed Sensing Methods

Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar (ISAR) target images are extracted using compressed sensing methods. The extracted images are edited and merged into measured Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images. A noise free image of the target is extracted from the Radar Cross Section (RCS) measurement by using the Basis Pursuit Denoise (BPDN) method and then solving for a model consisting of point scatterers.

Plant aquaporins

Aquaporins are integral membrane proteins that specifically transports water. In plants, aquaporins have been identified in the plasma membrane and in the vacuolar membrane. The presence of aquaporins provides the plant with an opportunity to regulate the flux of water between cells and within the cell by changing the abundance or activity of the aquaporins. One aquaporin, PM28A, and two aquaporin

Nonseparability of inferribility and measurability in quantum mechanics as a Systema Magnum

Quantum measurement theory has a peculiar nature with its TWO processes of assertibility, by proof and by measurement, which is beyond formal logic. This two-sortedness with respect to assertibility is discussed in terms of developments of many--sorted logics, sometimes referred to as Logica Magna. Although useful insights are obtained this way, we argue that there is a nonseparability of inferrib

Controlled axonal outgrowth and cell reactions to nanostructures

The interface between living cells and artificial surfaces are highly relevant for biomedical applications such as implants and organized cell growth for tissue reconstruction as well as for basic science purposes. In the present thesis, we have studied axonal guidance on various nano-patterned surfaces such as polymethyl-meth-acrylate, porous silicon and on magnetically aligned Ni nanowires. Furt

Magnetic orientation in migratory birds

Orienteringexperiment har visat att fåglarna använder information från både himlavalvet och jordens magMy thesis focuses on magnetic orientation in migratory birds, i.e. how they can perceive information from the Earth’s magnetic field and use it for orientation. To examine magnetoreception and the function of the light-dependent magnetic compass in birds, I performed behavioural orientation experiments with European robins, Erithacus rubecula, under different spectra and intensities of light. The

Perinatal mortality among immigrants from Africa´s Horn: The importance of experience, rationality, and tradition for risk assessment in pregnancy and childbirth

Popular Abstract in Swedish Summary in swedish Perinatal dödlighet bland invandrare från Afrikas Horn. Vikten av erfarenhet, rationellt tänkande och traditioner vid riskbedömning av gravida invandrarkvinnor. Avhandlingen visar att barn till kvinnor i invandrargrupper från Afrika söder om Sahara (majoriteten från Somalia och Etiopien), har högre perinatal dödlighet jämfört med barn till svenska kThis thesis is an exploration of the possible effects of maternal country of origin on the risk of perinatal mortality (PNM). Increased risk of PNM was found among infants of foreign-born women delivering in a Swedish hospital between 1990-1995. After adjustment for risk factors, however, the finding only held true for a subgroup of women from Ethiopia and Somalia (ES). In searching for the mecha

High GAD65 autoantibody levels in nondiabetic adults are associated with HLA but not with CTLA-4 or INS VNTR.

OBJECTIVES: To explore the relationship between genetic background and antibody levels in a nondiabetic population. We evaluated if high levels of autoantibodies against the 65 kDa isoform of glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD65Ab), were associated with high-risk genes, i.e. HLA, CTLA-4 and INS VNTR genes. DESIGN AND SUBJECTS: Seventy-five (M/F 39/36) subjects exceeding the 95th percentile of GAD65

Pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic analysis of antidiuretic peptides

The clinical pharmacology of desmopressin and a new vasopressin analogue (F992) was investigated in healthy human subjects. The common procedure of overhydration of healthy volunteers when studying the antidiuretic effect of a drug, may affect the pharmacokinetics, in particular the volumes of distribution. Hence, the estimated parameters may not be relevant to euhydrated patients. F992 was found
