Association of nut and seed intake with colorectal cancer risk in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition
A link between unsaturated fatty acids or phytonutrients and reduced risk of colorectal cancer has been suggested. However, the effects of higher intake of dietary sources of these nutrients, such as the nuts and seeds food group, are less clear. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of nut and seed intake on colorectal cancer risk within the European Prospective Investigation i
Factors important for efficacy of stereotactic body radiotherapy of medically inoperable stage I lung cancer. A retrospective analysis of patients treated in the Nordic countries
We reviewed results of SBRT treatment of 138 patients with medically inoperable stage I NSCLC treated during 1996 - 2003 at five different centres in Sweden and Denmark. Mean age was 74 years ( range 56 - 90) with 69 men and 72 women. SBRT was delivered using a 3D conformal multifield technique and a stereotactic body frame. Doses delivered were 30 - 48 Gy (65% isodose at the periphery of planning

Masked edge effects when measuring diffusion coefficients with the cup method
When diffusion coefficients are measured with the cup method, the exposed area is often less than the area of the sample. Because of this masking effect the measured diffusion coefficient is overestimated. The present article presents simple formulas based on two-dimensional analytical solutions to correct for this in cylindrical cup samples. Different cases of anisotropical diffusion are dealt wi
Oxidative activation of the propolis hapten isoprenyl caffeate
The reactions of isoprenyl caffeate, the strongest allergen known to be present in propolis, with plausible functional groups of proteins were studied. The thiols glutathione and cysteine, which add to isoprenyl caffeate after having been oxidised to the corresponding quinone, served as model substances. The structure of the thiol adducts was determined by spectroscopic methods, addition being fou
A novel and cytogenetically cryptic t(7;21)(p22;q22) in acute myeloid leukemia results in fusion of RUNX1 with the ubiquitin-specific protease gene USP42
Although many of the chromosomal abnormalities in hematologic malignancies are identifiable cytogenetically, some are only detectable using molecular methods. We describe a novel cryptic t(7;21)(p22;q22) in acute myeloid leukemia (AML). FISH, 3'RACE, and RT-PCR revealed a fusion involving RUNX1 and the ubiquitin-specific protease (USP) gene USP42. The genomic breakpoint was in intron 7 of RUNX1 an
Identification of a group of nontuberculous mycobacteria isolated from the South Indian BCG trial area by HPLC
Twenty-five isolates of nontuberculous mycobacteria isolated from the South Indian BCG trial area were analysed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for mycolic acid pattern. The chromatograms differentiated the isolates into four species, namely M. terrae complex, M. intracellulare, M. parafortuitum and M. fortuitum. Three strains were unidentified, one of which did not show any mycol
Nanosphere induced gene expression in human dendritic cells
The molecular mechanisms of nanosphere-induced mucosal immunization are important to decipher, since this can form the basis for novel approaches in, e.g., nasal vaccination. In this study, we have investigated the effect of nanospheres as antigen carriers on immature human dendritic cells. The results clearly indicate that tetanus toxoid immobilized nanospheres have a direct effect on human monoc
Organdonation? När får frågan ställas? Diskussion kring fiktiva fall visar på svårigheterna att nå samstämmighet [Organ donation? When is it allowed to question? Discussion on fictitious cases shows difficulties to achieve a consensus]
Technique for microwave-induced hyperthermia in superficial human tumours
In order to induce local hyperthermia in superficial tumours a computer system using a 2,450 MHz microwave generator connected to a circular (diameter 90 mm) direct contact applicator was constructed based on invasive temperature control. Small thermistor probes with a diameter of 0.6 mm are inserted in the tumour and surrounding tissues. Eight thermistors can be used simultaneously and one of the
Block adaptive filters with deterministic reference inputs for event-related signals: BLMS and BRLS
Adaptive estimation of the linear coefficient vector in truncated expansions is considered for the purpose of modeling noisy, recurrent signals. Two different criteria are studied for block-wise processing of the signal: the mean square error (MSE) and the least squares (LS) error. The block LMS (BLMS) algorithm, being the solution of the steepest descent strategy for minimizing the MSE, is shown
Experimental investigation of taxon-specific response of alkaline phosphatase activity in natural freshwater phytoplankton
It is widely accepted that alkaline phosphatase activity (APA) is an efficient indicator of phosphate limitation in freshwater phytoplankton communities. In this study, we investigated whether the response in APA to phosphate limitation differs among the taxa in a mixed phytoplankton assemblage. We used the new enzyme-labeled fluorescence (ELF) technique, which allows microscopic detection of phos
Mathematical Modeling of Biofilms: Theory, Numerics and Applications
A biofilm is a complex and diverse aggregation of microorganisms at surface comprised of among different things a protective adhesive matrix of extracellular polymeric substance. Biofilm research represents a broad range of sciences joining efforts within an interdisciplinary field of research. This thesis deals with the modeling of biofilms using the most fundamental laws of physics; the conserva

In the wake of the Green Revolution : Environmental and socioeconomic consequences of intensive rice agriculture - The Problems of weeds in Muda, Malaysia
The agricultural intensification strategies represented by the Green Revolution have since the mid-1960s had a very positive impact on food-grain production in Asia. Presently, however, a post-Green Revolution phase of declining growth in output and productivity is experienced in many of the areas where intensification took place. Partly, this can be explained by a number of environmental problems
Origin of molecular orbital splitting of C-60 on Al(110)
We have investigated the C-60 monolayer on Al(l 10) with angle-dependent photoelectron spectroscopy. We find that orbital components have different angular distributions. Calculations of cross sections of the highest occupied molecular orbital components for free, oriented C-60 are found to describe the experimental data quite well. The observed band splitting is attributed to intramolecular elect
A transient response study of the selective catalytic oxidation of ammonia to nitrogen on Pt/CuO/Al2O3
The reaction mechanism for the selective catalytic oxidation of ammonia to give nitrogen on CuO/Al2O3, Pt/Al2O3 and Pt/CuO/Al2O3 was investigated using transient experiments. Temperature-programmed desorption and reaction of adsorbed ammonia indicated the formation of NHx species at the surface, and that this species is the precursor for the formation of nitrogen and nitrogen oxides. Pt/CuO/Al2O3
Differential alterations in metabolic pattern of the spliceosomal UsnRNAs during pre-malignant lung lesions induced by benzo(a)pyrene: modulation by tea polyphenols
The differential alterations of the spliceosomal UsnRNAs (U1, U2, U4, U5, and U6) were reported to be associated with cellular proliferation and development. The attempt was made in this study to analyze the metabolic pattern of the spliceosomal UsnRNAs during the development of pre-malignant lung lesions induced in experimental mice model system by benzo(a)pyrene (BP) and also to see how tea poly
