A recommender geoportal for geospatial resource discovery and recommendation
Geoportals have been widely implemented by national spatial data infrastructures (NSDI) to provide users with the ability to search for geospatial resources over the Internet. This paper proposes an approach that can improve the functionalities of the conventional geoportals by adding recommendation capabilities to the execution mechanisms of geoportals. The geoportals with recommendation capabili
Predictive mapping of urban air pollution using apache spark on a hadoop cluster
Air pollution is one of the major environmental problems in the industrial and populated cities. Predictive mapping of urban air pollution and sharing the generated maps with the public and city officials have positive impacts on society and environment. This article presents a solution based on distributed processing concepts to generate predictive map of air pollution for the next 24 hours. Apac
Mapping European ecosystem change types in response to land-use change, extreme climate events, and land degradation
Extreme climate events and nonsustainable land use are important drivers altering the functioning of European ecosystems, resulting in loss of the services provided. Yet a consensus method for regular continental scale assessment of ecosystem condition in relation to land degradation (LD) is still lacking. Here, we propose a new remote sensing-based approach allowing for improved, repeated assessm
A polynomial formulation of adaptive strong stability preserving multistep methods
A new formulation of explicit multistep methods allows variable step-sizes by construction. This formulation can be used to construct time-adaptive strong stability preserving (SSP) multistep methods of any order for the solution of time-dependent PDEs. The new formulation is implemented in a MATLAB package, and some numerical examples are presented.
Courses for doctoral supervisors – an arena for learning and development (keynote presentation, abstract)
ETH Zurich Symposium on Doctoral supervision (Keynote talk, abstract))https://www.ethz.ch/en/doctorate/symposium-doctoral-supervision.htmlIn this session, we will describe how Lund University’s courses for doctoral supervisors have evolved over time and how they have been key for learning and development on the individual, collective and organisational level. The courses provide a unique arena that allows supervisors to share and investigate experiences, practices and circumstances that normally are hidden, sometimes deep within dep
Final assessment of the MEDEA Early Stage Researcher programme : MEDEA Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement No 641789
The final assessment of Early Stage Researcher (ESR) activities and development follows the trajectory as previously outlined by the MEDEA Mid-term report presented at the Aarhus meetingJanuary 2017. The herein present follow-up consists of three recent activities: •An ESR group statement of pros/cons/ requested activities (Lund meeting Sep 25th 2018).•Individual ESR web survey ratings of each joi
Mid-term assessment of the MEDEA Research School activities : MEDEA Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement No 641789
A wide range of research school activities of the MEDEA ESR training programme were monitored through observations and repeated structured individual interviews with participating Early Stage Researchers (ESRs; i.e. doctoral students). In the early stage of the project, instructional video presentations of participating laboratories and key scientific principles turned out helpful for the early st
Examiners ‘assessment criteria in dissertations and the learning outcomes of doctoral education
Swedish dissertations are public, followed by closedassessment committee meetings that only report pass-failvotes. 166 external examiners from 72 doctoral dissertationswere therefore anonymously surveyed for their views on passfail norms, scientific standard of theses and candidates and theacademic independence of the assessed candidate. They werealso asked to relate their assessment to the nation

Assessing reliance on vector navigation in the long-distance oceanic migrations of green sea turtles
Vector navigation, i.e., maintaining a constant heading for a given amount of time, is hypothesized to provide a viable basis for the navigational feats of a number of long-distance animal migrants. Since animals following this strategy are subject to drift by wind or by ocean current, performing long migrations relying on vector navigation is particularly challenging. We tested whether vector nav
Extreme sleep pattern in Lewy body dementia : A hypothalamic matter?
Excessive sleep during the night and for >2 hours during the day is part of the fluctuating wakefulness criterion of dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). The phenomenon â € sleep days' is not uncommon in nursing homes. Here, we describe a woman who, for months, slept for 3 days and nights in a row and thereafter was awake for 3 days and nights. Electroencephalogram (EEG) showed slow background activit
