Finite volume dependence of the quark-antiquark vacuum expectation value

A general formula is derived for the finite volume dependence of vacuum expectation values analogous to Luscher's formula for the masses. The result involves no integrals over kinematic quantities and depends only on the matrix element between pions at zero momentum transfer thus presenting a new way to calculate the latter, i.e. pion sigma terms. The full order p(6) correction to the vacuum conde

Radioimmunotherapy dosimetry--a review

Results from therapeutic trials in systemic radiation therapy with radiolabelled monoclonal antibodies are difficult to compare, because of lack of accurate dosimetry. This applies macroscopically as well as microscopically for both tumours and normal tissues. For treatment planning in radioimmunotherapy both the macroscopic and the microscopic absorbed dose distribution must be known. The former

Ultrasound-enhanced Fibrinolysis Pro-fibrinolytic and Non-beneficial Effects Of Ultrasound Exposure

Det görs även försök där ultraljud används fThe aim of this study was to further clarify the pro-fibrinolytic effects, and to explore the possible non-beneficial effects in ischemic organs, during exposure to pulsed ultrasound. This was accomplished by studies of the effects of different intensities of pulsed ultrasound exposure on the fibrinolytic properties of streptokinase and reteplase. Measurements were performed both following pre-exp

Preparation of molecularly imprinted polymers using nitroxide-mediated living radical polymerization

The use of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) in chemical and bioanalytical applications has been gaining in interest in recent years. Compared to their biological receptor counterparts, MIP's are easy to prepare, have long shelf stability and can be used under a variety of harsh conditions. The majority of MIPs currently used are produced by traditional free radical polymerization. One drawbac

Evidence for the key role of the adipocyte cGMP-inhibited cAMP phosphodiesterase in the antilipolytic action of insulin

Enhancement of cAMP degradation by increased cGMP-inhibited cAMP phosphodiesterase (cGI-PDE) activity is thought to be an important component of the mechanism whereby insulin counteracts catecholamine-induced lipolysis in adipocytes. In this study the selective cGI-PDE inhibitor OPC3911 was used to evaluate this role of cGI-PDE activation in intact rat adipocytes with special reference to changes

Overactive bladder: prevalence, risk factors and relation to stress incontinence in middle-aged women.

Objective To investigate the prevalence of and factors associated with overactive bladder in middle-aged women. Design Cross sectional population-based study. Setting Southern Sweden and the Women's Health in the Lund Area study (WHILA 1995-2000) where 6917 (64% of the invited) women, 50-59 years old in 1995, participated. Population From the WHILA study, 1500 women reporting troublesome urinar

Cerebral perfusion deficits in age-associated memory impairment. The role of tobacco smoking

Background and aims: Several studies report a high prevalence of memory complaints in the elderly, non-demented population. Since the pathogenesis and diversity of memory impairment in healthy people is still an unresolved issue, we designed our study to ascertain the occurrence of brain abnormalities in Age-Associated Memory Impairment (AAMI) by measuring regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF). Meth

Exercise-induced rib stress fractures: potential risk factors related to thoracic muscle co-contraction and movement pattern

The etiology of exercise-induced rib stress fractures (RSFs) in elite rowers is unclear. The purpose of the study was to investigate thoracic muscle activity, movement patterns and muscle strength in elite rowers. Electromyographic (EMG) and 2-D video analysis were performed during ergometer rowing, and isokinetic muscle strength was measured in seven national team rowers with a history of RSF and

Stability of vortex structures in quantum dots

We study the stability and structure of vortices emerging in two-dimensional quantum dots in high magnetic fields. Our results obtained with exact diagonalization and density-functional calculations show that vortex structures can be found in various confining potentials. In nonsymmetric external potentials we find off-electron vortices that are localized giving rise to charge deficiency or holes

The generic person in English and Swedish: a contrastive study of 'one' and 'man'

To find out how the ‘generic person’ is expressed in English and Swedish, the use and correspondence of the generic pronouns one in English and man in Swedish are examined in a bidirectional English-Swedish translation corpus. The material demonstrates clearly the greater frequency and versatility of Swedish man and the restricted use of English one. The difference is partly register-related: whil
