The Eigenfunctions of the Hilbert Matrix

For each noninteger complex number lambda, the Hilbert matrix H-lambda = (1/n+m+lambda)(n,m >= 0) defines a bounded linear operator on the Hardy spaces H-p, 1 < p < a, and on the Korenblum spaces , A(-tau), tau > 0. In this work, we determine the point spectrum with multiplicities of the Hilbert matrix acting on these spaces. This extends to complex lambda results by Hill and Rosenblum for real la

Guzhangian (mid Cambrian) trilobites from siliceous concretions of the Valtorres Formation, Iberian Chains, NE Spain

In the carbonate-siliciclastic strata of West Gondwana (e. g. in the Montagne Noire, France), the aftermath of the mid Languedocian (mid Cambrian) regression is characterized by a late Languedocian major turnover of trilobite families and a Furongian-early Tremadocian radiation related to the stepwise immigration of trilobite invaders from East Gondwana under persistent transgressive conditions. T

Excited state kinetics of anthracene-bridge-aniline intramolecular exciplexes.

We report on the synthesis and characterization of fluorescent halogen substituted anthracene-bridge-aniline (ABA) supermolecules that undergo structural reorganization on photoexcitation to form transient complexes. The syntheses were achieved in high yields on a large scale and the molecular structures were confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The photophysics of the ABA supermolecules

Robust global ocean cooling trend for the pre-industrial Common Era

The oceans mediate the response of global climate to natural and anthropogenic forcings. Yet for the past 2,000 years - a key interval for understanding the present and future climate response to these forcings - global sea surface temperature changes and the underlying driving mechanisms are poorly constrained. Here we present a global synthesis of sea surface temperatures for the Common Era (CE)

Regulatory compliance in Lake Victoria fisheries

This paper analyzes the causes for regulatory compliance, using traditional deterrence variables and potential moral and social variables. We use self-reported data from 459 Tanzanian artisanal fishers in Lake Victoria. The results indicate that the decision to be either a non-violator or a violator, as well as the violation rate - if the latter - are influenced by changes in deterrence variables

Services vs. Manufacturing – How Does Foreign and Domestic Sales Impact on Their R&D?

While the distinction between manufacturing and services becomes increasingly blurred to some observers, we find, using a panel of Swedish firms, clear evidence that foreign sales (exports) are more important than domestic sales for stimulating R&D. This is particularly clear for manufacturing and this importance of foreign sales has increased over time, simultaneous to an opening up of the Sw

Spectra of Integration Operators and Weighted Square Functions

Motivated by the study of the spectrum of integration operators T(g)f(z) = integral(z)(0) f(xi)g'(xi) d xi, acting on the Hardy spaces H-p, we prove weighted versions of the classical estimates due to Fefferman-Stein and Littlewood-Paley which express the H-p-norm of an analytic function with help of its derivative.

A water gradient can be used to regulate drug transport across skin

At normal conditions there is a substantial water gradient over the skin as it separates the water-rich inside of the body from the dry outside. This leads to a variation in the degree of hydration from the inside to the outside of skin and changes in this gradient may affect the structure and function of skin. In this study we raise the question: How do changes in the water gradient across skin a

Arthropod appendages from the Weeks Formation Konservat-Lagerstatte: new occurences of anomalocaridids in the Cambrian of Utah, USA

The Guzhangian Weeks Formation (house Range, Utah, USA) contains a virtually unstudied but diverse assemblage of "soft-bodied" organisms. This fauna includes several enigmatic appendages of arthropods that are described in this contribution. Six appendages (two isolated and four paired appendages) are interpreted as frontal appendages of a probably new species of Anomalocaris. They are characteriz

Optimization of link load balancing in multiple spanning tree routing networks

In telecommunication networks based on the current Ethernet technology, routing of traffic demands is based on multiple spanning trees: the network operator configures different routing spanning trees and assigns each demand to be routed in one of the selected spanning trees. A major optimization issue in this solution is the combined determination of (i) a set of appropriate spanning trees, and (

First report from the Swedish National Forensic Psychiatric Register (SNFPR)

To the best of our knowledge, the present register is the only nationwide forensic psychiatric patient register in the world. The aim of this article is to describe the content of the Swedish National Forensic Psychiatric Register (SNFPR) for Swedish forensic patients for the year 2010. The subjects are individuals who, in connection with prosecution due to criminal acts, have been sentenced to co

An adaptive algorithm for fixation, saccade, and glissade detection in eyetracking data.

Event detection is used to classify recorded gaze points into periods of fixation, saccade, smooth pursuit, blink, and noise. Although there is an overall consensus that current algorithms for event detection have serious flaws and that a de facto standard for event detection does not exist, surprisingly little work has been done to remedy this problem. We suggest a new velocity-based algorithm th

Standardization and Utilization of Biobank Resources in Clinical Protein Sciene with Examples of Emerging Applications

Biobanks are a major resource to access and measure biological constituents that can be used to monitor the status of health and disease, both in unique individual samples and within populations. Most “omic” activities rely on access to these collections of stored samples to provide the basis for establishing the ranges and frequencies of expression. Furthermore, information about the relative abu

Modification of two-level-atom resonance fluorescence near a plasmonic nanostructure

Modification of the resonance fluorescence spectrum of a two-level atom driven by a monochromatic field in the close proximity of a plasmonic nanostructure (metal sphere) is studied in detail. It is shown that one can control this spectrum by varying several key parameters: (i) the radius of the nanosphere, (ii) polarization of the incident radiation, and (iii) the atom's location around the nanos

On some Bergman shift operators

Abstract in Undetermined An operator identity satisfied by the shift operator in a class of standard weighted Bergman spaces is studied. We show that subject to a pureness condition this operator identity characterizes the associated Bergman shift operator up to unitary equivalence allowing for a general multiplicity. The analysis of the general case makes contact with the class of n-isometries st

Molecular epidemiology of malaria prevalence and parasitaemia in a wild bird population.

Avian malaria (Plasmodium spp.) and other blood parasitic infections of birds constitute increasingly popular model systems in ecological and evolutionary host-parasite studies. Field studies of these parasites commonly use two traits in hypothesis testing: infection status (or prevalence at the population level) and parasitaemia, yet the causes of variation in these traits remain poorly understoo

Patch Testing with Formaldehyde 2.0% in Parallel with 1.0% by the Swedish Contact Dermatitis Research Group.

In a multicentre study consecutively patch-tested dermatitis patients were tested simultaneously with 1.0% and 2.0% (w/v) formaldehyde in aqua applied with a micropipette (15 µl) to the filter paper disc in Finn Chambers (0.30 mg/cm2 and 0.60 mg/cm2, respectively). A total of 2,122 dermatitis patients were patch-tested. In all, 77 (3.6%) patients reacted positively to formaldehyde; 37 reacted only

Convergence of the implicit-explicit Euler scheme applied to perturbed dissipative evolution equations

We present a convergence analysis for the implicit-explicit (IMEX) Euler discretization of nonlinear evolution equations. The governing vector field of such an equation is assumed to be the sum of an unbounded dissipative operator and a Lipschitz continuous perturbation. By employing the theory of dissipative operators on Banach spaces, we prove that the IMEX Euler and the implicit Euler schemes h

Song divergence between subspecies of reed bunting is more pronounced in singing styles under sexual selection

Song divergence between populations of a species can lead to reproductive isolation and speciation. However, birds may have different singing styles used in distinct social contexts, and songs of each style may change at different rates over time and space. Here, we tested whether song divergence between subspecies of reed bunting, Emberiza schoeniclus, differs with singing style, by comparing son
