Using radio telemetry to study dispersal of the beetle Osmoderma eremita, an inhabitant of tree hollows

This paper describes a radio-tracking study of Osmoderma eremita, a large Scarabaeid beetle, living in hollow trees. The study seems to be the first in which radio telemetry has been used with a flying insect in the field. Some 74 adult beetles were tagged with radio transmitters weighing 0.48-0.52 1, and having a nominal battery life of 12-20 days. Transmissions were detected at ranges of up to 3

BCS1L is expressed in critical regions for neural development during ontogenesis in mice.

BCS1L is a chaperone necessary for the incorporation of Rieske Fes and Qcr10p into complex III (CIII) of the respiratory chain. Mutations in the BCS1L gene cause early fetal growth restriction and a lethal neonatal disease in humans, however, the pathogenesis remains unclear. Here, we analysed the expression of BCS1L during mouse embryonic development and compared its expression with that of the m

Colonisation of spruce roots by two interacting ectomycorrhizal fungi in wood ash amended substrates

Interactions between two ectomycorrhizal fungal species, Piloderma croceum Erikss. and Hjortst. and Piloderma sp. 1 (found to colonise spruce roots and wood ash granules in the field), were investigated in wood ash amended substrates. The comparative ability of these fungi to colonise roots of non-mycorrhizal spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) seedlings was studied in relation to factorial combinati

Levels of N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) and its metabolites in plasma and urine from volunteers after experimental exposure to NMP in dry and humid air.

Department of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Institute of Laboratory Medicine, Lund University Hospital, S-221 85 Lund, Sweden. The aim of this study was to investigate if the uptake of N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), a widely used industrial chemical, increases after exposure to NMP in humid air compared to dry air. NMP has been described to be an airway irritant and a developmentally to

Extraction of Lignin from Kraft Cooking Liquor by Ultrafiltration

I det här arbetet har ligninuttag med keramiLignin is a potential biofuel which can be extracted from kraft cooking liquor. Lignin can also prove valuable as a speciality chemical. By extracting lignin potential economical revenue can be gained by pulp mills, as well as technical benefits such as easier delignification and bleaching. The subject of this work was the extraction of lignin from kraft cooking liquor using ceramic ultrafiltrati

Mode of action of acidocin D20079, a bacteriocin produced by the potential probiotic strain, Lactobacillus acidophilus DSM 20079

Lactobacillus acidophilus DSM 20079 is the producer of a novel bacteriocin termed acidocin D20079. In this paper, mode of action using three various concentrations of acidocin D20079 (2,048, 128 and 11.3 AU/ml) was determined against an indicator strain L. delbrueckii subsp. lactis DSM 20076. These concentrations all led to marked decreases in both the number of viable cells and in optical density

Effect of type of fragrance compounds on their location in hexagonal liquid crystal

Three fragrances, limonene, benzaldehyde, and phenethylalcohol (that differ in their polarities), were solubilized in hexagonal liquid crystal using the polyethylene oxide-polypropylene oxide-polyethylene oxide, (EO27 PO61 EO27), P-104 triblock copolymer, and water. The interlayer spacing of the hexagonal liquid crystals were established using small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS). The SAXS data are

Cellular pathways and molecular regulation of hematopoietic stem cells

Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) are defined by their unique properties to self-renew and differentiate into all hematopoietic cell lineages. Residing in the bone marrow (BM), adult HSCs are organized in a hierarchy of cells that differ in their self-renewal and proliferative capacity. Exact relationships of the various cells in the hematopoietic hierarchy, their potential to commit to certain line

Pharmacodynamics of moxifloxacin against Streptococcus pyogenes in an in vitro kinetic model

The aim of the present study was to investigate the pharmacodynamics of moxifloxacin against strains of Streptococcus pyogenes with different susceptibilities to erythromycin by using an in vitro kinetic model simulating human pharmacokinetics of moxifloxacin at oral doses of 400 and 200 mg, respectively. When the different strains of S. pyogenes were exposed to the higher dose, the number of bact
