Platinum(II) and gold(I) complexes based on 1,1 '-bis(diphenylphosphino)metallocene derivatives: Synthesis, characterization and biological activity of the gold complexes

The synthesis of series of 1,2,1' substituted bis(diphenylphosphino)- ruthenocenyl (1-4) and ferrocenyl cis-platinum(II) (5-7) and gold(I) (8-12) complexes are described. Crystal structures of 2 and 4, as well as 5, 6 and 10 confirm the molecular geometry of these ligands and their metal complexes. Preliminary investigation of four gold complexes as potential anticancer, antiHIV and antimalaria sh

Eyeless mexican cavefish save energy by eliminating the circadian rhythm in metabolism.

The eyed surface form and eyeless cave form of the Mexican tetra Astyanax mexicanus experience stark differences in the daily periodicities of light, food and predation, factors which are likely to have a profound influence on metabolism. We measured the metabolic rate of Pachón cave and surface fish at a fixed swimming speed under light/dark and constant dark photoperiods. In constant darkness su

The Finnmarkian Orogeny revisited: An isotopic investigation in eastern Finnmark, Arctic Norway

The Scandinavian Caleclonides have been viewed as resulting from either a single Silurian (i.e. Scandian) event or from polycyclic orogenies involving several collisions on the margin of Baltica. Early studies of the Kalak Nappe Complex (KNC) in Finnmark, Arctic Norway, led to the hypothesis of an Early Cambrian-Early Ordovician (520-480 Ma) Finnmarkian Crogeny, though the nature of this tectonic

Patientrapporterade SEFAS : Frågeformulär bra utvärderingsmetod vid fot- och fotledsbesvär

There is need for structured evaluation of disability before and after surgery. The patients' subjective aspects of their symptoms should be one part of this evaluation, preferably captured by patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs). There are several PROMs, either generic or region-specific questionnaires, but no » gold standard « for foot or ankle evaluation. We translated the Self-reported Fo

Shortest Paths with Higher-Order Regularization

This paper describes a new method of finding thin, elongated structures in images and volumes. We use shortest paths to minimize very general functionals of higher-order curve properties, such as curvature and torsion. Our method uses line graphs to find the optimal path on a given discretization, often in the order of seconds on a single computer. The curves are then refined using local optimizat

Network modeling of the transcriptional effects of copy number aberrations in glioblastoma

DNA copy number aberrations (CNAs) are a hallmark of cancer genomes. However, little is known about how such changes affect global gene expression. We develop a modeling framework, EPoC (Endogenous Perturbation analysis of Cancer), to (1) detect disease-driving CNAs and their effect on target mRNA expression, and to (2) stratify cancer patients into long-and short-term survivors. Our method constr

The Spectrum of Fe II

The spectrum of singly ionized iron (Fe II) has been recorded using high-resolution Fourier transform (FT) and grating spectroscopy over the wavelength range 900 angstrom to 5.5 mu m. The spectra were observed in high-current continuous and pulsed hollow cathode discharges using FT spectrometers at the Kitt Peak National Observatory, Tucson, AZ and Imperial College, London and with the 10.7 m Norm

Breastfeeding Support in Neonatal Intensive Care: A National Survey

Background: The incidence of breastfeeding of preterm infants is affected by the support provided at the hospital and in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). However, policies and guidelines promoting breastfeeding vary both nationally and internationally. Objectives: The aim of this survey was to describe breastfeeding support in Danish NICUs, where approximately 98% of mothers initiate lacta

Synthesis by spark plasma sintering of a novel protonic/electronic conductor composite: BaCe0.2Zr0.7Y0.1O3-delta /Sr0.95Ti0.9Nb0.1O3-delta (BCZY27/STN95)

A novel two-phase ceramic composite (cercer) material consisting of a solid solution of barium cerate and -zirconate doped with yttrium (BaCe0.2Zr0.7Y0.1O3-delta : BCZY27), together with niobium-doped strontium titanate (Sr0.95Ti0.9Nb0.1O3-delta : STN95), has been synthesized by solid-state reaction and sintered conventionally (CS) at 1350-1500 A degrees C, as well as by spark plasma sintering (SP

Feasibility of endovascular and surface cooling strategies in acute stroke

Background Therapeutic hypothermia (TH) is a promising treatment of stroke, but limited data are available regarding the safety and effectiveness of cooling methodology. We investigated the safety of TH and compared the cooling capacity of two widely used cooling strategies endovascular and surface cooling. Methods COOLAID Oresund is a bicentre randomized trial in Copenhagen (Denmark) and Malmo (S

EndoS from Streptococcus pyogenes is hydrolyzed by the cysteine proteinase SpeB and requires glutamic acid 235 and tryptophans for IgG glycan-hydrolyzing activity

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: The endoglycosidase EndoS and the cysteine proteinase SpeB from the human pathogen Streptococcus pyogenes are functionally related in that they both hydrolyze IgG leading to impairment of opsonizing antibodies and thus enhance bacterial survival in human blood. In this study, we further investigated the relationship between EndoS and SpeB by examining their in vitro temporal

The ability of three different models of frailty to predict all-cause mortality: Results from the European Male Aging Study (EMAS)

Few studies have directly compared the ability of the most commonly used models of frailty to predict mortality among community-dwelling individuals. Here, we used a frailty index (FI), frailty phenotype (FP), and FRAIL scale (FS) to predict mortality in the EMAS. Participants were aged 40-79 years (n = 2929) at baseline and 6.6% (n = 193) died over a median 4.3 years of follow-up. The FI was gene

Ambipolar doping in quasifree epitaxial graphene on SiC(0001) controlled by Ge intercalation

The electronic structure of decoupled graphene on SiC(0001) can be tailored by introducing atomically thin layers of germanium at the interface. The electronically inactive (6 root 3 x 6 root 3)R30 degrees reconstructed buffer layer on SiC(0001) is converted into quasi-free-standing monolayer graphene after Ge intercalation and shows the characteristic graphene pi bands as displayed by angle-resol

Striatal Glutamate Release in L-DOPA-Induced Dyskinetic Animals

L-DOPA-induced dyskinesia is a common side effect developed after chronic treatment with 3,4-dihydroxyphenyl-L-alanine (L-DOPA) in Parkinson's disease. The biological mechanisms behind this side effect are not fully comprehended although involvement of dopaminergic, serotonergic, and glutamatergic systems has been suggested. The present study utilizes in vivo amperometry to investigate the impact

Necrotizing myositis and septic shock caused by Haemophilus influenzae type f in a previously healthy man diagnosed with an IgG3 and a mannose-binding lectin deficiency

An increased incidence of infections by Haemophilus influenzae type f (Hif) has recently been suggested, but such infections have mainly been regarded as opportunistic. We present here a dramatic case of Hif necrotizing myositis and septic shock. A subsequently diagnosed IgG3 and mannose-binding lectin deficiency possibly contributed to the severe outcome.
