Determination of trace levels of dinitrophenolic compounds by microporous membrane liquid-liquid extraction in environmental water samples

A fast and simple hollow fibre-based microporous membrane liquid-liquid extraction (MMLLE) method is proposed for the determination of trace levels of dinitrophenolic compounds in water samples. The optimization step was performed using a three-variables Doehlert matrix design, involving the fibre length, the quantity of trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO) in the acceptor phase and the extraction time.

Validation of a new automated method for analysis of gated-SPECT images

We recently presented a new method for quantification of CArdiac FUnction - denoted CAFU - as the first step in the development of an automated method for integrated interpretation of gated myocardial perfusion single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) images. The aim of this study was to validate CAFU in the assessment of global and regional function of the left ventricle. Quantitative g

On the induction of cold acclimation in carrots (Daucus carota L.) and its influence on storage performance

We investigated the role of cold acclimation in carrot plants with respect to its influence on the storage performance of the harvested taproots. The induction of cold acclimation was followed in plants cultivated in a growth chamber under strict climate control and in taproots harvested from two separate field cultivations where the plants had been exposed to the natural variations in climate. Un

Embedding fragment ab initio model potentials in CASSCF/CASPT2 calculations of doped solids: Implementation and applications

In this article, we present a fragment model potential approach for the description of the crystalline environment as an extension of the use of embedding ab initio model potentials (AIMPs). The biggest limitation of the embedding AIMP method is the spherical nature of its model potentials. This poses problems as soon as the method is applied to crystals containing strongly covalently bonded struc

Factors related to frequent usage of the primary healthcare services in old age: findings from The Swedish National Study on Aging and Care

People aged 60 or more are the most frequent users of healthcare services. In this age range, however, both frequent and infrequent users can be found. Frequent users have high rates of illnesses. Previous research has found that the frequency may be influenced also by psychological and social factors. The aim of this study was to investigate to what degree such factors add to the explanation of d

Spectroscopic studies of random telegraph noise in InAs quantum dots in GaAs

We have observed and investigated random telegraph noise in the photoluminescence from InAs quantum dots in GaAs. The luminescence from a single quantum dot, exhibiting switching between two levels, has been spectrally resolved. The random telegraph noise is only observed in the presence of band filling. We find no spectral shift of the emission in the different states. It is only the intensity, m

Sound transmission of structures. A finite element approach with simplified room description

A theoretical prediction model for the sound insulation of a wall is an important tool when developing new wall structures. A full description of the entire room-wall-room system in a theoretical model for sound insulation is still today too computation-intensive, implying that the sound insulation at higher frequencies cannot be studied. Some simplifications must thus be introduced. The simplific

Reflecting on reflexivity: Reflexive textual practices in organization and management theory

This paper identifies four sets of textual practices that researchers in the field of organization and management theory (OMT) have used in their attempts to be reflexive. We characterize them as multi-perspective, multi-voicing, positioning and destabilizing. We show how each set of practices can help to produce reflexive research, but also how each embodies limitations and paradoxes. Finally, we

Right temporal lobe activation when listening to emotionally significant music

The cerebral activation when normal elderly participants (6 women, 6 men, M age = 70 years) listened to self-selected emotionally significant music was investigated. Musical memories and preferences were discussed in an interview, and a piece of music with great emotional significance to the participant was selected and later played during measurement of the regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF). Me

Collagen type II (CII)-specific antibodies induce arthritis in the absence of T or B cells but the arthritis progression is enhanced by CII-reactive T cells.

Antibodies against type II collagen (anti-CII) are arthritogenic and have a crucial role in the initiation of collagen-induced arthritis. Here, we have determined the dependence of T and B cells in collagen-antibody-induced arthritis (CAIA) during different phases of arthritis. Mice deficient for B and/or T cells were susceptible to the CAIA, showing that the antibodies induce arthritis even in th

Navigation by green turtles: which strategy do displaced adults use to find Ascension Island?

Sea turtles are known to perform long-distance, oceanic migrations between disparate feeding areas and breeding sites, some of them located on isolated oceanic islands. These migrations demonstrate impressive navigational abilities, but the sensory mechanisms used are still largely unknown. Green turtles breeding at Ascension Island perform long oceanic migrations (>2200 km) between foraging areas

IT and strategic decision making

A total of 41 top executive managers in large organizations/enterprises were interviewed about factors affecting their demands on, attitudes towards and use of, information and communication technology (ICT) when making strategic decisions in their work. Poor knowledge management, i.e. poor possibilities to store, reuse, and share knowledge in an organized and disciplined way due to inefficient IC

Laser-accelerated protons with energy dependent beam direction

The spatial distribution of protons, accelerated by intense femtosecond laser pulses interacting with thin target foils under oblique irradiation are investigated. Under certain conditions, the proton beams are directed away from the target normal. This deviation is towards the laser forward direction, with an angle that increases with the level and duration of the amplified spontaneous emission p

Storminess variation during the last 6500 years as reconstructed from an ombrotrophic peat bog in Halland, southwest Sweden

Cores taken from an ombrotrophic peat bog in the coastal zone of Halland, southwest Sweden, were examined for wind transported mineral grains, pollen and humidity indicators. The core covers the period from 6500 cal. yr BP to present. Ombrotrophic conditions existed from ca. 4200 cal. yr BP onwards. Bog surface wetness fluctuated strongly until ca. 3700 cal. yr BP, with an apparent dominance of dr
