Efter forskarstudier i Zürich och Lund disputerade jag vid Lunds universitet 1994. Jag blev docent samma år och tjänstgjorde som biträdande professor i Schweiz 1994-1995. Under 1996 var jag gästforskare vid universitetet i Tübingen, finansierad av Alexander von Humboldstiftelsen. Jag har under olika perioder haft stipendier från Knut och Alice Wallenbergs stiftelse, Svenska institutet och Humanistisk-Samhällsvetenskapliga forskningsrådet. Mellan åren 1996-2007 var jag forskare och lärare vid Göteborgs universitet, sedan år 2000 som professor i Nya testamentets exegetik och hermeneutik. Jag var även adjungerad professor i exegetisk teologi vid Teologiska Högskolan i Stockholm mellan 2003-2008. Hösten 2007 rekryterades jag till tjänsten som professor i Nya testamentets exegetik vid Centrum för teologi och religionsvetenskap, Lunds universitet.
