Kurs 10 högskolepoäng • TRVN09
The course gives basic skills in rabbinic Hebrew while at the same time providing insights into the culture of rabbinic Judaism and the scope, style and characteristics of rabbinic literature. Students will study a selection of early Jewish texts with a special focus on the main works of classical rabbinic literature: The Mishnah, Mekhilta, Genesis and Leviticus Rabbah, and the Babylonian Talmud. In addition to convoluted legal reasoning (the Talmud in particular), these texts include legends, folk tales, scriptural interpretations, parables, theology, and magical incantations. To the religious, the non-religious and scholars alike, they open a window to Jewish culture in antiquity. Brief selections from the rabbinic sources will be read in Hebrew along with an English translation. Longer passages will be read in English translation only.
