Popular Abstract in English Typically, when we speak of ionic solutions we mean a salt (as solute) dissolved in some liquid (the solvent). In this thesis, we predominantly consider ionic solutions for which there is no solvent---room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs). It follows that these liquids have a large concentration of charged particles, a property that causes them to be effective electrRoom-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) are compounds composed entirely of ions, which are liquid at temperatures below 100 degrees Celsius. Their high ionic strength and strong coupling make them useful for a number of applications, e.g. as electrolytes in supercapacitors. These properties also make them interesting subjects for theoretical research, as the canonical theories of the electrical dou

Popular Abstract in Swedish Avhandlingen behandlar det grekiska landskapet Argolis på östra Peloponnesos och vissa aspekter av livet där under drygt 600 år av romersk överhöghet. I området har man från den tiden funnit lämningar av städer, byar, villor och gårdar så väl som speciella anläggningar för framställning av olivolja, vin och keramik, dessutom badanläggningar, akvedukter, stenbrott, hamnaThis study focuses on the region of Argolid in the eastern part of the Greek Peloponnese during the Roman Imperial era, taking up a variety of aspects of life there based mainly on archaeological evidence. The introduction presents the study area and the background to the study. This is followed in the next chapter by a survey of the various kinds of sites of Roman date found in the Argolid. Citie

Excited states in 59Zn were observed for the first time following the fusion-evaporation reaction 24Mg + 40Ca at a beam energy of 60 MeV. The GASP array in conjunction with the ISIS Silicon ball and the NeutronRing allowed for the detection of n-rays in coincidence with evaporated light particles. The mirror symmetry of 59Zn and 59Cu is discussed.

The electronic structure of high-quality CrO2(100) films was investigated by means of x-ray absorption and resonant photoemission spectroscopy at the 2p-3d excitation threshold. The obtained binding energy of the occupied Cr 3d states is in agreement with the results predicted within the local spin-density approximation using the dynamical mean-field theory [L. Craco , Phys. Rev. Lett. 90, 237203

Two families with retinitis pigmentosa showed inheritance of an Arg-16-His ROM1 gene mutation with either an Arg-13-Trp RDS mutation or an Arg-135-Trp RHO mutation. The phenotypes of double and single heterozygotes were determined to examine the hypothesis that digenic inheritance may increase disease expression. In the family with ROM1 and RDS mutations, single heterozygotes were normal but one d

The aim of the present study was to investigate the proliferative effects of Ang II in human cardiac fibroblasts. The effects of Ang II in human cardiac fibroblasts on the 3H-thymidine incorporation, the cell number, the 3H-leucine incorporation and the total protein content were measured. The expression of receptor mRNA was performed by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). An

Objective: To perform genetic linkage analysis in a family affected with ALS and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Methods: The authors performed a genome-wide linkage analysis of a four-generation, 50-member Scandinavian family in which five individuals were diagnosed with ALS and nine with FTD. Linkage calculations assuming autosomal dominant inheritance of a single neurodegenerative disease manife

Three isoforms of the major birch pollen allergen, Bet v, 1 from Betula verrucosa have been expressed as recombinant proteins in E. coli and purified. The immunochemical properties of recombinant isoforms (rBet v 1) differed on immunoblots when compared using Mabs and birch pollen allergic patients serum IgE. 2-D gel analysis showed that recombinant isoforms with different epitope structure can fo

This study evaluates the effect on the skeleton of physical activity from age 9 to 16. In 42 girls and 44 boys, bone mass and bone size were evaluated longitudinally by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) from ages 13 to 16. Physical activity from ages 9 to 13 was cross-sectionally evaluated at baseline (age 13). Girls with high physical activity from ages 9 to 13 at baseline had higher femoral

Haemophilia is a rare and potentially life-threatening disease. In Sweden, with a population of approximately 8.5 million, about 350 people suffer from the more severe forms of haemophilia or von Willebrand disease. Meticulous management is important if the patients are to be spared chronic disability and serious treatment complications. The disease is lifelong and affects psychosocial aspects of

In order to give adequate support to risk managers, new risk assessment methods should be developed that are (1) scientifically sound, (2) simplified, and (3) suited for precautionary risk management. In this Perspective we propose that the notion of a precautionary default can be a useful tool in the development of such methods. A precautionary default is a cautious or pessimistic assumption that

The level scheme of Mn-51 has been investigated using the Si-28(S-32 2alpha1p)Mn-51 fusion-evaporation reaction at 125 MeV beam energy. The gamma rays were detected in the Ge-detector array Gammasphere, which was coupled to the 4pi-charged-particle detector Microball and the Neutron Shell for the coincident detection of evaporated particles. Over 100 new gamma-ray transitions connecting some 50 ex

Background:Membranous expression of the anti-adhesive glycoprotein podocalyxin-like (PODXL) has previously been found to correlate with poor prognosis in several major cancer forms. Here we examined the prognostic impact of PODXL expression in urothelial bladder cancer. Methods:Immunohistochemical PODXL expression was examined in tissue microarrays with tumours from two independent cohorts of patie

GLP-1 receptor agonists may provide an alternative to prandial insulin for advancing basal insulin therapy. Harmony 6 was a randomized, open-label, active-controlled trial testing once-weekly albiglutide vs thrice-daily prandial insulin lispro as an add-on to titrated once-daily insulin glargine.RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Patients taking basal insulin (with or without oral agents) with HbA1c 7-1

OBJECTIVES: We examined whether the association between hormone therapy (HT) use and coronary heart disease (CHD) risk differed between women with and without vasomotor symptoms (VMS). STUDY DESIGN: We used data from a Dutch (EPOS) and Swedish (WHILA) population-based sample of 8865 women, aged 46-64 years, and free of CHD, stroke, venous thrombosis/pulmonary embolism or cancer at baseline. Data o

Originally studied in relation to aging and cancer research, telomerase is now also investigated in relation to psychiatric disorders and treatments. Based on emerging clinical and preclinical data, we hypothesise that telomerase activation could represent a novel element mediating the mechanism of action of certain psychopharmacological interventions (e.g. antidepressants, lithium and antipsychot

One of the major roles of seminal plasma is to provide antimicrobial protection for the spermatozoa in the female reproductive tract. We found that the bactericidal activity of seminal plasma was highest after resolution of the seminal clot and that this antibacterial activity subsequently became greatly diminished. The antibacterial activity was derived from peptides generated by fragmentation of

We have tested the hypothesis that environmental factors can influence postischemic progenitor cell survival and differentiation in the dentate gyrus. The proliferation marker bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) was administered during 7 days starting 24 h after ligation of the right middle cerebral artery. Postoperatively the rats were housed in standard cages or transferred to enriched environment 24 h or
