The purpose of this paper is to show how eye-tracking methodology can be used to study ‘inner space’; both from a theoretical point of view – the existence (or not) of internal image representations – as well as from an applied point of view – the usage of mental imagery in thinking and reasoning. First, we introduce the reader to the mental imagery debate. Second, we summarize studies on mental i

This thesis presents a number of results and algorithms for the numerical solution of problems in geometric computer vision. In geometric computer vision one tries to extract geometric information about the world and the observer from a sequence of images. Estimation of scene structure and camera motion using only image data has been one of the central themes of research in photogrammetry, geodesy

Abstract in UndeterminedMost people in the world speak more than one language and many learn it as adolescents or adults. The study of second language acquisition (meaning any language learnt after the first language) is concerned with how a new language develops in the presence of an existing one. Since gestures are an integral part of communication, subject to crosslinguistic, socio- and psychol

To accurately model the effect on the dynamic behavior of a floor when using glue in the joints between the chipboards and beams in a lightweight structure can be a daunting task. It is however important to have a model that can simulate these junctions with high fidelity. The behavior of T-junctions with different geometries and methods of adhesion has been previously investigated via measurement

A previously proposed model for non-stationary signals is extended in this contribution. The model consists of mul- tiple time-translated locally stationary processes. The opti- mal Ambiguity kernel for the process in mean-square-error sense is computed analytically and is used to estimate the time-frequency distribution. The performance of the kernel is compared with other commonly used kernels.

Evidence suggests that educational differences in perinatal outcomes have increased in some countries (Eastern Europe) while remained stable in others (Scandinavian countries). However, less is known about the experience of Southern Europe. This study aims to evaluate the association between maternal education and perinatal outcomes derived from birthweight (low birthweight and macrosomia) and ges

This Letter presents a measurement of the W+W- production cross section in root s = 7 TeV pp collisions by the ATLAS experiment, using 34 pb(-1) of integrated luminosity produced by the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Selecting events with two isolated leptons, each either an electron or a muon, 8 candidate events are observed with an expected background of 1.7 +/- 0.6 events. The measured cross se

A measurement of the top quark electric charge is carried out in the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider using 2.05 fb(-1) of data at a centre-of-mass energy of 7TeV. In units of the elementary electric charge, the top quark charge is determined to be 0.64 +/- 0.02 (stat.) +/- 0.08 (syst.) from the charges of the top quark decay products in single lepton t (t) over bar candidate events.

The stability of the Nyström method for the Sherman-Lauricella equation on contours with corner points $c_j$, $j=0,1,...,m$ relies on the invertibility of certain operators $A_{c_j}$ belonging to an algebra of Toeplitz operators. The operators $A_{c_j}$ do not depend on the shape of the contour, but on the opening angle $\theta_j$ of the corresponding corner $c_j$ and on parameters of the approxim

A search for high-mass resonances decaying into tau(+)tau(-) final states using proton-proton collisions at root s = 8 TeV produced by the Large Hadron Collider is presented. The data were recorded with the ATLAS detector and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 19.5-20.3 fb(-1). No statistically significant excess above the Standard Model expectation is observed; 95% credibility upper limits

A search for the pair production of heavy leptons (N-0, L-+/-) predicted by the type-III seesaw theory formulated to explain the origin of small neutrino masses is presented. The decay channels N-0 -> W(+/-)l(+/-) (l = e, mu, tau) and L-+/- -> W(+/-)v (v = v(e), v(mu), v(tau)) are considered. The analysis is performed using the final state that contains two leptons (electrons or muons), two jets f

A measurement of the top-antitop (t (t) over bar) charge asymmetry is presented using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb(-1) of LHC pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV collected by the ATLAS detector. Events with two charged leptons, at least two jets and large missing transverse momentum are selected. Two observables are studied: A(C)(ll) based on the identifie

In this work, we present a method for estimating the parameters detailing an unknown number of linear, possibly harmonically related, chirp signals, using an iterative sparse reconstruction framework. The proposed method is initiated by a re-weighted group-sparsity approach, followed by an iterative relaxation-based refining step, to allow for high resolution estimates. The ATLAS experiment at the LHC has measured the production cross section of events with two isolated photons in the final state, in proton-proton collisions at root s = 7 TeV. The full data set collected in 2011, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.9 fb(-1), is used. The amount of background, from hadronic jets and isolated electrons, is estimated with data-driven techniques and subtra

A search for strongly produced supersymmetric particles is conducted using signatures involving multiple energetic jets and either two isolated leptons (e or mu) with the same electric charge, or at least three isolated leptons. The search also utilises jets originating from b-quarks, missing transverse momentum and other observables to extend its sensitivity. The analysis uses a data sample corre

A search for supersymmetry (SUSY) in events with large missing transverse momentum, jets, at least one hadronically decaying tau lepton and zero or one additional light leptons (electron/muon), has been performed using 20.3 fb(-1) of proton-proton collision data at root s = 8 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. No excess above the Standard Model background expectatio

The stability of the Nyström method for the Sherman–Lauricella equation on piecewise smooth closed simple contour $\Gamma$ is studied. It is shown that in the space $L_2$ the method is stable if and only if certain operators associated with the corner points of $\Gamma$ are invertible. If $\Gamma$ does not have corner points, the method is always stable. Numerical experiments show the transformati
