Concept and Architecture of a Decision Support System for Regulation of Diuretics in Chronic Heart Failure Patients

Brödtexten Hjärtsvikt är eFluid overload is the build up of excessive fluid in the body and is a common condition amongst chronic heart failure patients. Fluid overload is treated with diuretics but the level of excessive fluid can vary. To match the fluctuations a flexible diuretics regime may be prescribed where patients are instructed to temporarily increase the dosage upon onset or worsening of fluid overload. In this

Exploring a Two Higgs Doublet Model with a U(1) Family Symmetry and a Complex Singlet

In this project a two Higgs doublet model with a complex singlet and an extra family symmetry providing a mechanism for suppression of flavor changing neutral currents is explored. The goal is to investigate the phenomenological consistency of the model using a custom software framework. To this end, the scalar and Yukawa sectors of this extension of the Standard Model are explored in detail. The

Alkaline wet oxidation of biorefinery lignin from wheat straw

Ett problem med biogasproduktion från sådana matClimate change and depletion of fossil resources have generated a need for energy production based on renewable resources such as lignocellulosic biomass. Agricultural residues, like wheat straw, is lignocellulosic biomass that could contribute to the energy supply if it was used for biogas production. One issue with biogas production from lignocellulosic materials is, however, the high content of

Cultural Production in urban environments - An investigation of the possibilities to make space for culture in coexistence with housing

The Brundtland report envisioned three sustainable dimensions for development: economic growth, ecological balance, and social inclusion with the aim to incorporate these dimensions into local, national, and global plans for sustainable development. In recent years, discussions about our society’s competitiveness and whether the three dimensions of sustainable development include all aspects of ou

Genome-wide microscopic image analysis of potential regulators of lysosomes and cell death

When technology meets cell biology Lysosomes are small bags present in our cells that are filled with destructive molecules, normally needed for removing cell garbage. In some cases, these bags rupture and their contents leak into the interior of the cell leading to cell death. This can contribute to many diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease. However, rupturing lysosomes intentionally, can also

The role of immune function in migrating birds

The immune system is the main defense barrier against infections but exerts selection pressures on other life history traits. Recent studies have given importance to understanding the role of the immune system in birds, and it has been hypothesized that during migration, birds either increase their immune function, as they might encounter novel pathogens, or decrease it to account for the cost of

Analysis of priming and licensing signals detected by pattern recognition receptors in murine macrophages

Analysis of priming and licensing signals detected by pattern recognition receptors in murine macrophages Vårt immunsystem är uppdelat i två delar, det medfödda och det adaptiva.

Poetry, Nature and Trauma during the COVID-19 Pandemic: An Intersectional Examination of the Traumatised Subject and their Relationship to Nature

This thesis explores the ways in which ‘‘Ides of March, 2020’’ (2020) by Didi Jackson, ‘‘Sing a Darkness’’ (2020) by Carl Phillips, and ‘‘Desert Lily’’ (2020) by Rigoberto González engage with concepts of nature and trauma. All three poems reveal poignant elaborations on human position and relationship to nature, and how nature might help the speakers dealing with the traumatic present of the pand

Shared responsibility of States for torture committed in armed conflicts

The thesis discusses the issue of shared responsibility in international law. In particular, how States may be held accountable for the commission of torture in the context of armed conflicts. Part I discusses the definition of torture under IHRL and IHL, the obligations of States deriving from international treaties. Part II discusses the question of shared responsibility and loopholes in the cu

Open source software is becoming more common in software development today and constitutes an increasing share in modern web applications. Open source has many benefits; it is cost-effective and increases development speed, quality, and security. With the advent of open source, companies and organizations have taken many different initiatives to minimize the risks of open source, disseminate knowl

Exploration of temporal and phenotypical heterogeneity in TFH and germinal centre B cells

I detta mastersarbete har jag studerat hur antikroppssvaret som B celler producerar förändras över tid och i samspel med de follikulära T hjHigh affinity antibodies of appropriate isotype are crucial for protection against pathogens and are generated within secondary lymphoid organs in structures called germinal centers (GC). Apart from affinity maturation, germinal centers also give rise to memory B cells and plasma cells, but how these fate decisions are regulated and what signals may be delivered by TFH cells is still unclear. Usin

BECCS – a climate friend or foe? A discourse depiction of the negative emissions technology BECCS in the UK

The UK has recently increased its 80% GHG emissions reduction target to net-zero by 2050 compared to 1990 levels. To achieve this goal, the UK emphasizes deploying the technology Bioenergy Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS). However, despite multiple challenges, BECCS is still prevalent in the UK. This paper aims to identify why this is so by investigating how BECCS is communicated, by whom, and t

Arnoldi iteration and Chebyshev polynomials

In this thesis, we examine the Arnoldi iteration - an iterative algorithm used for finding a Hessenberg form of a matrix as well as approximating its eigenvalues by forming an orthonormal basis of a Krylov subspace. We explore the mechanism behind the work of the algorithm and how the values it finds approximate the eigenvalues. In the process of answering these questions we consider the concepts
