EULAR evidence-based recommendations for the diagnosis of hand osteoarthritis: report of a task force of ESCISIT

Objectives: To develop evidence-based recommendations for the diagnosis of hand osteoarthritis (OA). Methods: The multidisciplinary guideline development group, representing 15 European countries, generated 10 key propositions regarding diagnosis using a Delphi consensus approach. For each recommendation, research evidence was searched for systematically. Whenever possible, the sensitivity, specif

Effects of a brown beans evening meal on metabolic risk markers and appetite regulating hormones at a subsequent standardized breakfast: a randomized cross-over study.

Dietary prevention strategies are increasingly recognized as essential to combat the current epidemic of obesity and related metabolic disorders. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the potential prebiotic effects of indigestible carbohydrates in Swedish brown beans (Phaseolus vulgaris var. nanus) in relation to cardiometabolic risk markers and appetite regulating hormones.

Spectral modification of laser-accelerated proton beams by self-generated magnetic fields

Target normal measurements of proton energy spectra from ultrathin (50-200 nm) planar foil targets irradiated by 10(19) W cm(-2) 40 fs laser pulses exhibit broad maxima that are not present in the energy spectra from micron thickness targets (6 mu m). The proton flux in the peak is considerably greater than the proton flux observed in the same energy range in thicker targets. Numerical modelling o

Momentary improvement of hand sensibility by excluding vision

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of visual input on the results in a sensory testing procedure on hands. Sensory testing was done with the tested hand behind a screen in a counterbalanced setting with open eyes, and blindfolded in 66 healthy persons. Tactile discrimination (2pd) and touch thresholds (Semmes-Weinstein monofilaments) were tested for on the index finger of the dom

Ceci est, de manière significative, différenMany Aymara men and women claim that human knowledge as transmitted through language is pure ‘siwsawi’, i.e. talk, opinions, views and judgments of particular individuals. As such it is knowledge of a particular kind; it is knowledge concerning the opinions of other humans, nothing else. It is thereby significantly different from the non-linguistic, experiential knowledge that is lived-through and

Love and Eschatology

P>This article reflects on the connection between Christian hope for salvation and Christian praxis today. Following a discussion of Christian approaches to hope, salvation, and reconciliation, the eschatological potential of love is explored in conversation with significant theologies of love in Western Christianity. It is argued that love, properly understood, offers the most adequate and dynami

Regulation of Pancreatic Beta Cell Stimulus-Secretion Coupling by microRNAs.

Increased blood glucose after a meal is countered by the subsequent increased release of the hypoglycemic hormone insulin from the pancreatic beta cells. The cascade of molecular events encompassing the initial sensing and transport of glucose into the beta cell, culminating with the exocytosis of the insulin large dense core granules (LDCVs) is termed "stimulus-secretion coupling." Impairment in

Intrinsic subtypes and prognostic implications in epithelial ovarian cancer

Färre än hälften av dem som får diaOvarian cancer is the seventh most common cancer in women globally, with approximately 240,000 new cases annually. Although a rare disease, it is the most lethal gynecologic malignancy. Unspecific symptoms result in late diagnosis and a generally poor prognosis. However, ovarian cancer is a heterogeneous disease comprising different disease entities, which is of importance in clinical decision-mak

Modes of propagation of electromagnetic pulses in closed cylindric bi-isotropic waveguides

Modes of propagation of electromagnetic pulses in closed, cylindric waveguides with bi-isotropic fillings are analyzed systematically using complex, time-varying electromagnetic fields. The emphasis is on the circular bi-isotropic waveguide and the bi-isotropic parallel-plate waveguide. For both geometries, seven Volterra integral equations of the second kind, which are to be solved simultaneously

Simultaneous saccharification and fermentation of steam-pretreated willow

Ethanol was produced from SO2-impregnated steam-pretreated willow by simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF). Experiments with SSF were performed in stirred 300-ml vessels and in a 3-1 fermenter. Commercial cellulases were used in combination with either Saccharomyces cerevisiae or Zymomonas mobilis. The amounts of substrate, enzymes, yeast, bacteria, and nutrients were varied. The te

Emulsification and adsorption properties of hydrophobically modified potato and barley starch

In this paper, we studied the adsorption at emulsion droplets of potato starch, which was hydrophobically modified with octenyl succinate anhydride (OSA), a surface active macromolecule containing ultrahigh molar mass components. The results show that the substance works as an efficient emulsifier and that it can in some cases generate high surface loads (10 mg/m(2)). The results can be explained

Immunocytochemical localization of galanin in the rat male and female genital tracts and motor effects in vitro

Galanin, a recently discovered neuropeptide, was studied in the rat male and female reproductive tracts by immunocytochemistry and in vitro pharmacology. Nerve fibers containing galanin immunoreactivity were most abundant in the female paracervical tissue, where they surrounded non-immunoreactive ganglion cells. Galanin nerves were also found in the uterus and Fallopian tubes, as well as in the va

The stability of 5-S-cysteinyldopa and 6-hydroxy-5-methoxyindole-2-carboxylic acid in human urine

5-S-cysteinyldopa and 6-hydroxy-5-methoxyindole-2-carboxylic acid are important intermediate metabolites in the formation of cutaneous melanin pigment. Since they both are serious candidates as markers of melanoma progression, their stability in urine has been investigated during storage at various conditions. The results show that storage at -20 degrees C is necessary. Both compounds are nonstabl

Poor survival in t(8;21) (q22;q22)-associated acute myeloid leukaemia with leukocytosis

Twenty-nine consecutive cases with a t(8;21)(q22;q22) in the bone marrow (BM) karyotype were retrospectively studied concerning clinical, morphological and cytogenetic data. All had been diagnosed as acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), 27 FAB subtype M2 and two M1, comprising 5% of all cytogenetically analysed AML during 18 yr. Auer rods were the most consistent t(8;21)-associated morphological finding

Isotherms for adsorption of cellobiohydrolase I and II from Trichoderma reesei on microcrystalline cellulose

Adsorption to microcrystalline cellulose (Avicel) of pure cellobiohydrolase I and II (CBH I and CBH II) from Trichoderma reesei has been studied. Adsorption isotherms of the enzymes were measured at 4 degrees C using CBH I and CBH II alone and in reconstituted equimolar mixtures. Several models (Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, Jovanovic) were tested to describe the experimental adsorption isotherms.
