Evaluation of laser-irradiated Ar clusters as a source for time-resolved x-ray studies

We have measured the absolute average photon flux, the spectral characteristics, and the time structure of x rays emitted from Ar clusters which were irradiated by a 100 fs laser with an intensity of 10(17) W/cm(2). The measured photon flux was 10(7) photons per shot in the K-alpha (at 3 keV) line in a 4 pi sr solid angle. The temporal structure was measured using a streak camera with a 10 ps time

First global forum on education on organ donation and transplantation for schools.

The Transplantation Society, in collaboration with the Canadian Society of Transplantation, organized a forum on education on ODT for schools. The forum included participants from around the world, school boards, and representatives from different religions. Participants presented on their countries' experience in the area of education on ODT. Working groups discussed about technologies for educat

Hypocalcaemia after total thyroidectomy for Graves' disease and for benign atoxic multinodular goitre.

PURPOSE: Postoperative hypocalcaemia has been reported to be more common after total thyroidectomy (TT) for Graves' disease than after TT for benign atoxic multinodular goitre (MNG). The reasons for this potential association are not clear. In the present study, the frequency and risk factors of hypocalcaemia after TT for Graves' vs MNG were compared. METHODS: Between January 1999 and October 2009

Sonographic characteristics of squamous cell cancer and adenocarcinoma of the uterine cervix.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the sonographic characteristic of squamous cell cancer (SCC) and adenocarcinoma (AC) of the cervix using transvaginal ultrasound. METHODS: Women with early stage cervical cancer undergoing transvaginal ultrasound examination prior to surgery were prospectively included. The sonographic characteristics were assessed with regard to tumor morphology, vascularization, size, exte

The aim is to show how buildings archaeology can be renewed and developed. The motivation is my belief that buildings archaeology does not fully utilize the potential of standing buildings as historical sources, which is mainly due to the traditional outlook on buildings as two-dimensional objects. When three

Lung function in 30-year-old alpha-1-antitrypsin-deficient individuals.

BACKGROUND: Alpha-1-antitrypsin (AAT) deficiency increases the risk of emphysema, especially in smokers. In 1972-1974, all 200,000 Swedish new-born infants were screened for AAT deficiency and individuals with severe (PiZZ) and moderate (PiSZ) deficiency have been followed-up regularly. The aim of the present study was to examine their lung function at the age of 30years, comparing them to a group

Industrial Management Models for Construction Waste Management

Much attention is nowadays devoted to waste management. The objective of this work is to show how commonly known business economic models and methods, as well as the Polluter- Pays Principle, can be applied to waste management in general and to waste fractionation in particular, so as to facilitate environmental optimisation of industrial and construction waste fractionation. In discussing the fun

Short leucine-rich glycoproteins of the extracellular matrix display diverse patterns of complement interaction and activation.

The extracellular matrix consists of structural macromolecules and other proteins with regulatory functions. An important family of the latter class of molecules found in most tissues is the small leucine-rich repeat proteins (SLRPs). We have previously shown that the SLRP fibromodulin binds directly to C1q and activates the classical pathway of complement. In the present study we further examine

Multielectron Dissociative Ionization of Co2 In Intense Laser Fields

The multiphoton ionization of CO2 has been studied using a laser of 794 nm WaVelength and focused intensities in the region of 10(16) W cm-2. The kinetic energy distributions and ion yields obtained using time-of-flight spectroscopy coupled with covariance mapping can be interpreted most simply in terms of charge-symmetric fragmentation, the strongest channel being O2+ + C2+ + O2+. These results a
