Modeling electroporation of the non-treated and vacuum impregnated heterogeneous tissue of spinach leaves

Uniform electroporation of the heterogeneous structure of spinach leaf cross section is a technological challenge that is addressed in this investigation. Three dimensional models were created with cells arranged in specific tissue types, considering a leaf with its air fraction and a leaf where the air fraction was replaced by a solution of known properties using vacuum impregnation. The models w

Improved breakdown voltages for type I InP/InGaAs DHBTs

We have investigated the base-collector breakdown voltage of type I InGaAs/InP DHBTs, which is shown to be dominated by band-to-band tunneling in the base-collector grade. By optimizing the grade we obtain a 20% increase in the breakdown voltage compared with traditional grades.

Imaging a one-electron InAs quantum dot in an InAs/InP nanowire

Nanowire heterostructures define high-quality few-electron quantum dots for nanoelectronics, spintronics, and quantum information processing. We use a cooled scanning probe microscope (SPM) to image and control an InAs quantum dot in an InAs/InP nanowire using the tip as a movable gate. Images of dot conductance vs tip position at T=4.2 K show concentric rings as electrons are added, starting with

Is population structure in the European white stork determined by flyway permeability rather than translocation history?

European white stork are long considered to diverge to eastern and western migration pools as a result of independent overwintering flyways. In relatively recent times, the western and northern distribution has been subject to dramatic population declines and country-specific extirpations. A number of independent reintroduction programs were started in the mid 1950s to bring storks back to histori

Does the Neighborhood Area of Residence Influence Non-Attendance in an Urban Mammography Screening Program? A Multilevel Study in a Swedish City.

The public health impact of population-based mammography screening programs depends on high participation rates. Thus, monitoring participation rates, as well as understanding and considering the factors influencing attendance, is important. With the goal to acquire information on the appropriate level of intervention for increasing screening participation our study aimed to (1) examine whether, o

External and internal factors influencing self-directed online learning of physiotherapy undergraduate students in Sweden: a qualitative study.

Online courses have become common in health sciences education. This learning environment can be designed using different approaches to support student learning. To further develop online environment, it is important to understand how students perceive working and learning online. The aim of this study is to identify aspects influencing students' learning processes and their adaptation to self-dir

Association Between BRCA1 and BRCA2 Mutations and Survival in Women With Invasive Epithelial Ovarian Cancer

Context Approximately 10% of women with invasive epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) carry deleterious germline mutations in BRCA1 or BRCA2. A recent article suggested that BRCA2-related EOC was associated with an improved prognosis, but the effect of BRCA1 remains unclear. Objective To characterize the survival of BRCA carriers with EOC compared with noncarriers and to determine whether BRCA1 and BRC

Analysis of in-cylinder H2O2 and HO2 distributions in an HCCI engine - Comparison of laser-diagnostic results with CFD and SRM simulations

By applying a novel approach to evaluate photofragmentation laser-induced fluorescence (PFLIF) imaging, experimental quantitative information on the temporal in-cylinder distribution of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in a homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine was extracted. The results from PFLIF were then compared to those obtained from chemical kinetics simulations using computational

Leading logarithms for the nucleon mass

Within the heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory approach, we have studied the leading logarithm behavior of the nucleon mass up to four-loop order exactly and we present some results up to six-loop order as well as an all-order conjecture. The same methods allow to calculate the main logarithm multiplying the terms with fractional powers of the quark mass. We calculate thus the coefficients of

Factors influencing insulin sensitivity in patients with mild primary hyperparathyroidism before and after parathyroidectomy

Objectives. Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is associated with cardiovascular disease. The aims of this study were to investigate lipid and glucose metabolism in mild PHPT, and to identify whether insulin sensitivity correlates with circulating levels of adiponectin, SHBG, and osteocalcin before and after parathyroidectomy (PTX). Materials and methods. Forty-five patients with PHPT were examine

Isotropic diffusion weighting in PGSE NMR: Numerical optimization of the q-MAS PGSE sequence

Isotropic diffusion weighting is employed in diffusion NMR and MRI for rapid determination of the trace of the diffusion tensor and for showing the presence of microscopic diffusion anisotropy in a globally isotropic material. In the recently introduced q-MAS PGSE sequence, short gradient pulses define the beginning and the end of the diffusion time by quickly increasing and reducing the magnitude

HTLV-1 and HIV-2 Infection Are Associated with Increased Mortality in a Rural West African Community

Background: Survival of people with HIV-2 and HTLV-1 infection is better than that of HIV-1 infected people, but long-term follow-up data are rare. We compared mortality rates of HIV-1, HIV-2, and HTLV-1 infected subjects with those of retrovirus-uninfected people in a rural community in Guinea-Bissau. Methods: In 1990, 1997 and 2007, adult residents (aged >= 15 years) were interviewed, a blood sa

Comparison of LDPC Block and LDPC Convolutional Codes Based on their Decoding Latency

We compare LDPC block and LDPC convolutional codes with respect to their decoding performance under low decoding latencies. Protograph based regular LDPC codes are considered with rather small lifting factors. LDPC block and convolutional codes are decoded using belief propagation. For LDPC convolutional codes, a sliding window decoder with different window sizes is applied to continuously decode

Neural dynamics of inflectional and derivational processing in spoken word comprehension: laterality and automaticity

Rapid and automatic processing of grammatical complexity is argued to take place during speech comprehension, engaging a left-lateralized fronto-temporal language network. Here we address how neural activity in these regions is modulated by the grammatical properties of spoken words. We used combined magneto- and electroencephalography to delineate the spatiotemporal patterns of activity that supp

Inter-pigment interactions in the peridinin chlorophyll protein studied by global and target analysis of time resolved absorption spectra

Inter-pigment interactions define the functioning of light-harvesting protein complexes. To describe the particularly complex molecular dynamics and interactions of peridinin and chlorophyll in the peridinin chlorophyll protein of Amphidinium carterae, we applied global and target analysis to a series of ultrafast transient absorption experiments. We have created and validated a model that consist
