Seven mols. isolated from lichen species were tested as antioxidants and photoprotectors of UV-B (280-315 nm.) radiation. Perlatolic acid was the best of these seven mols. The decarboxythamnolic, usnic and usnic acid deriv. showed activity as photoprotectors. Finally, thamnolic acid showed good scavenging activity.

OBJECTIVES: The susceptibility to arsenic (As)-induced diseases differs greatly between individuals, probably to a large extent due to genetic differences in arsenic metabolism. The aim for this study was to identify genetic variants affecting arsenic metabolism. METHODS: We evaluated the association between urinary metabolite pattern and polymorphisms in three gene-groups related to arsenic metab

Taking its starting point from a critical dialogue with feminist and postcolonial theory, this dissertation explores processes of othering in a feminist adult educational institution, Women’s Room, in Sweden. Women’s Room is a women-only school and half of the student body has a migrant background. The project is an ethnographic study consisting of nine months of participant observations and inter

Cholesterol-rich clusters of SNARE (soluble NSF attachment protein receptor) proteins have been implicated as being important for exocytosis. Here we demonstrate the significance of cholesterol for normal biphasic insulin secretion in mouse beta cells by removal of cholesterol from the plasma membrane using methyl-beta-cyclodextrin (MBCD). Maximal inhibition of insulin secretion in static incubati

BACKGROUND: Health-care costs for hand and forearm injuries in young children are poorly documented. We examined costs in 533 children injured years 1996-2003. METHODS: Health-care costs and costs for lost productivity were retrospectively calculated in children from three catchment areas in Sweden. Seven case categories corresponding to alternative prevention strategies were constructed. RESULTS:

A logistic regression model was used to

In this paper a robust method is presented for the combined design of STATCOM and Power System Stabilizer (PSS) controllers in order to enhance the damping of the low frequency oscillations in power systems. The combined design problems among PSS and STATCOM internal ac and dc voltage controllers has been taken into consideration. The equations that describe the proposed system have been linearize

The possible contribution of HLA-DRB3, -DRB4 and -DRB5 alleles to type 1 diabetes risk and to autoantibodies against insulin (IAA), GAD65 (GADA), IA-2 (IA-2A) or ZnT8 against either of the three amino acid variants, R, W or Q at position 325 (ZnT8RA, ZnT8WA, and ZnT8QA, respectively) at clinical diagnosis is unclear. Next generation sequencing (NGS) was therefore used to determine all DRB alleles

Doctors are expected to serve the patient in an unbiased and medically accurate manner. Yet, this does not prevent doctors and other medical staff from having pronounced views on whether the patient deserves care. Based on field notes from a cardiology clinic, this contradiction is discussed and analyzed. In directing the spotlight on what circumstances are pointed out by the staff when discussing

OBJECTIVE: Umbilical cord acid-base analysis is fundamental for assessing intrapartum hypoxia. The accuracy of arterial umbilical cord blood lactate, pH and base deficit to reflect a low 5-minute Apgar score and hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) stage 2-3 was assessed, and new gestational age-adjusted reference standards were compared with traditional stationary reference values. DESIGN AND SA

This text deals with a very particular dilemma: how should I, a post-linguistic-turn gender historian, deal with the reality that women are constantly excluded from the continuing writing of the past (or are silenced in the history that is played out in front of my eyes) without falling back on the herstory tradition that the majority of us academics say we have left behind? The problem is discuss
