Supporting Research in Practice: Workflows, Challenges, and Needs, May 2026

Researchers use LUNARC in different ways, for example to work with larger datasets, run computational analyses, or access specialised software and environments.  LUNARC is currently exploring how web-based research environments can better support different research practices across disciplines at Lund University. As part of this work, we are organising a small, exploratory workshop where researche

Containers and workflows should work again on COSMOS (Update 3 July)

As a precaution following a recent security-related issue, we had temporarily applied a configuration change on COSMOS. This change affected some workflows, particularly those using containers. Updated computes nodes (aka backend nodes) are currently released to the pool and can be utilised via e.g. the slurm scheduler or the Desktop on Demand system.  The updated nodes should be able to run conta

Login Nodes Temporarily Unavailable Due to Security Updates [Updated 260710]

Due to important security updates, we need to temporarily close access to the login nodes while they are being updated and rebooted. We are also performing a rolling update of the compute nodes, during which interactive access to compute nodes will be unavailable.Running batch jobs will continue to run normally and are not affected. Only new logins and interactive access are temporarily unavailabl

The World's Oldest Complete Wooden Hunting Weapons are Younger Than Previously Thought (co-author Zoran Perić)

The world's oldest complete wooden hunting weapons are 200,000 years old, not 300,000 as previously believed. This is shown by a new dating study that Zoran Perić from the Department of Geology participated in, which has now been published in Science Advances and highlighted in international media. The discovery indicates that the spears originate from Neanderthals, deepening our understanding of

This article is over 5 years old, and the information may therefore be outdated.   Daniel Conley is investigating the seas of ancient times. His sights are set on finding a moment in time when the chemistry of the oceans changed completely, when the diatoms became common, which changed the Earth's ecosystem. In addition to be a major food source, the algae absorb large quantities of silicon from t

Carla Nantke publishes a study where they track human activities during the last 4300 years by studying Si isotopes in lake sediments.

This article is over 5 years old, and the information may therefore be outdated. The terrestrial silicon (Si) cycle determines the amount of Si transported to the oceans. In this study we use Si isotopes measured in diatoms to show how human activity influences the Si budget of Lake Tiefer See (Germany) within the last 4300 years. Deforestation and crop harvest in the catchment are the dominant pr
