Reliability of self-reported questionnaire for epidemiological investigation of Helicobacter pylori eradication in a population-based cohort study

General population-based cohort studies provide solid evidence on mass Helicobacter pylori (HP) eradication effects. Self-reported questionnaires are occasionally used in such studies to ascertain the HP eradication history. However, reports on the reliability of these questionnaires are lacking. Validity of an algorithm to identify cardiovascular deaths from administrative health records: a multi-database population-based cohort study

A cardiovascular mortality algorithm applied to administrative health records had moderate validity when compared to vital statistics data. Substantial variation existed across study sites representing different geographic locations and two healthcare systems. These variations may reflect different diagnostic coding practices and healthcare utilization patterns. Read the paper at https://bmchealth

Future of surgical registries

The value of accurate healthcare data has never been more apparent than during the past year, and there is increasing recognition of the important role surgical registries play in driving improved patient outcomes, patient safety, and academic research. Successful registries need to be responsive and adapt to the rapidly changing clinical environment. Read the paper at https://academic.oup.com/bjs

Reflection on modern methods: causal inference considerations for heterogeneous disease etiology

Molecular pathological epidemiology research provides information about pathogenic mechanisms. A common study goal is to evaluate whether the effects of risk factors on disease incidence vary between different disease subtypes. National and regional registries for congenital heart diseases: Strengths, weaknesses and opportunities

1) We found 15 national/regional registries of congenital heart disease worldwide. 2) Registry coverage ranged from 25 to 100% of all eligible cases. 3) The best registries contain demographic, clinical, physical, and laboratory data. 4) Regular verification is essential for quality data and valid statistical findings.
