Tritium in urine from members of the general public and occupationally exposed workers in Lund, Sweden, prior to operation of the European Spallation Source

Published 22 February 2020 A powerful neutron source, the European Spallation Source (ESS), is currently under construction in Lund, Sweden (~90 000 inhabitants). Levels of tritium (3H) in urine were estimated in members of the public in Lund and employees at the ESS using liquid scintillation counting, to obtain baseline levels before the start of operation of the ESS. Polygenetic risk for coronary artery disease increases hospitalization burden and mortality

Published 22 February 2020 Our results suggest that genetic predisposition for CAD can predict hospitalization burden and mortality, especially due to cardiovascular causes, independently of traditional risk factors. As the risk conferred by the GRS is partially modifiable, our results may help to reduce societal costs, individual suffering and prolong life. New publication in IJC Heart & Vasculat

Predictors of satisfaction after lumbar disc herniation surgery in elderly

Published 23 February 2020 Only one out of ten elderly, is dissatisfied with the outcome of LDH surgery. Age, preoperative duration of leg pain, preoperative SF 36 score, and for satisfaction also dominance of back over leg pain, are in elderly factors associated to good and poor subjective outcome after LDH surgery. Impaired kidney function is associated with lower cognitive function in the elder general population. Results from the Good Aging in Skåne (GÅS) cohort study

Published 23 February 2020 A possible connection on vascular basis between impaired kidney function and cognitive dysfunction has been suggested in previous studies. Contradictory results regarding specific cognitive domains have been reported. The aim for this study was to investigate the association between kidney function and specific cognitive domains. A future for the world's children? A WHO–UNICEF–Lancet Commission

Published 24 February 2020 Despite dramatic improvements in survival, nutrition, and education over recent decades, today's children face an uncertain future. This Commission presents the case for placing children, aged 0–18 years, at the centre of the SDGs: at the heart of the concept of sustainability and our shared human endeavour. Read more here.

The impact of care process development and comorbidity on time to surgery, mortality rate and functional outcome for hip fracture patients: a retrospective analysis over 19 years with data from the Swedish National Registry for hip fracture patients, RIKS

Published 24 February 2020 For a long time the attention given to the hip fracture patient group was minor and without any certain consideration to their frailty. To improve the care for these patients Skane University Hospital in Lund has during the past 19 years worked actively with developing the care. This paper aims to describe what impact the care process development has had on functional ou

Low bone mineral density is associated with hypogonadism and cranial irradiation in male childhood cancer survivors

Published 25 February 2020 We investigated if bone mineral density was related to testosterone deficiency and/or previous cancer treatment in men who were childhood cancer survivors. Men with untreated testosterone deficiency or previous treatment with cranial irradiation were at increased risk of impaired bone health. Prevention of osteoporosis should be considered in their follow-up. New publica

Remote sensing of insects with laser light (Finished Master Project)

Published 3 May 2023 Hyperspectral lidar measuring the backscattered spectra of free-flying insects that cross the laser beam. In this thesis, an instrument using a broadband light beam for remote sensing of insects was developed. The thickness of a free-flying insect wing was measured at a distance of 85 m and with an accuracy of 2 nm. Insects play a key role in the ecosystem and are essential fo

Unveiling Plasma Mysteries: Harnessing 3D Tomography and Laser Power!

Published 23 June 2023 Let me clarify that we are not referring to blood plasma, as that pertains to the field of biology. Instead, we are discussing the fourth state of matter, which can be envisioned as a mixture of electrons, atoms, and excited species. To put it simply, it can be described as an ionized gas or a "soup" of charged particles. Our research group focuses on exploring the applicati

Saturated planar laser-induced fluorescence using sinusoidal intensity modulation (Finished Bachelor Project)

Published 24 October 2023 An irradiated fluorophore. What if it was possible to identify elements by simply shining a light on them? This proposed method might make it possible to do just that - by analysing just one photograph. Many of us have probably encountered a pen with” invisible” ink that is only visible if you shine on it with a UV lamp. Besides that, these are useful for writing secret m
