Tenacious Documents : Exploring the Allure of Documentation in Swedish Compulsory Schools

Under de senaste 15 åren har olika svenska regeringar försökt åtgärda detta problem, menThe Swedish education authorities are up against a tenacious problem. Teachers have for years expressed dissatisfaction over increasingly prolific and pervasive demands for documentation that hijacks time that could have been invested in pupils’ learning. Over the past 15 years different Swedish governments have sought to remedy this problem but to no avail. The ‘burden of documentation’, as it is

Tracking early mammalian organogenesis - prediction and validation of differentiation trajectories at whole organism scale

Early organogenesis represents a key step in animal development, during which pluripotent cells diversify to initiate organ formation. Here, we sampled 300,000 single-cell transcriptomes from mouse embryos between E8.5 and E9.5 in 6-h intervals and combined this new dataset with our previous atlas (E6.5-E8.5) to produce a densely sampled timecourse of >400,000 cells from early gastrulation to orga

Historical perspective on von Willebrand disease

In 1926, the Finnish physician Erik Adolf von Willebrand first described an inherited bleeding disorder with features that suggested that this disease was distinct from classic hemophilia and other bleeding disorders. The original observations were made by members of a large family (family S) living on the island of Föglö in the Åland archipelago in the Baltic Sea. The index case was a young girl,

(min, + ) Matrix and Vector Products for Inputs Decomposable into Few Monotone Subsequences

We study the time complexity of computing the (min, + ) matrix product of two n× n integer matrices in terms of n and the number of monotone subsequences the rows of the first matrix and the columns of the second matrix can be decomposed into. In particular, we show that if each row of the first matrix can be decomposed into at most m1 monotone subsequences and each column of the second matrix can

Transience of continuous-time conservative random walks

We consider two continuous-time generalizations of conservative random walks introduced in Englander and Volkov (2022), an orthogonal and a spherically symmetrical one; the latter model is also known as random flights. For both models, we show the transience of the walks when d ≥ 2 and that the rate of direction changing follows a power law t-α, 0 < α ≤ 1, or the law (In t)-β where β ≥ 2.

A new analytical method for modeling network hydraulics in district systems with bidirectional mass and energy flows

Recent technologies of district heating and cooling (DHC) systems integrate renewable energy sources and connect multiple heat producers and consumers to the same network. The resulting interactions may therefore cause the fluid in the pipe, or the energy carried by the system, to flow in both directions. This article presents a newly developed analytical method for evaluating the hydraulic states

Tourism in the polycrisis : a Horizon 2050 paper

Purpose: Tourism faces a range of interconnected and potentially transformative global risks – collectively considered an evolving polycrisis – that have not been adequately defined and understood. As a result, the industry struggles to proactively anticipate and mitigate potential future challenges, while governments lack insight for strategic longer-term decision-making on tourism development. T

The Mutare–Fingeren dyke swarm : the enigma of the Kalahari Craton’s exit from supercontinent Rodinia

The Rodinia supercontinent broke apart during the Neoproterozoic. Rodinia break-up is associated with widespread intraplate magmatism on many cratons, including the c. 720–719 Ma Franklin large igneous province (LIP) of Laurentia. Coeval magmatism has also been identified recently in Siberia and South China. This extensive magmatism terminates ∼1 myr before the onset of the Sturtian Snowball Earth

RELATIVE INCOME AND MENTAL HEALTH IN COUPLES

The share of couples where the wife outearns the husband is increasing globally. In this paper, I examine how this dynamic affects mental health. Using data on the 2001 marital cohort in Sweden, I show that while mental health is positively associated with own and spousal income, it is negatively linked to the wife’s relative income. In the most conservative specification, the wife starting to ear

Structure-dependent electromagnetic finite-volume effects through order 1/L3

We consider electromagnetic finite-volume effects through order 1/L3 in different formulations of QED, where L is the periodicity of the spatial volume. An inherent problem at this order is the appearance of structure-dependent quantities related to form factors and the analytical structure of the correlation functions. The non-local constraint of the widely used QEDL regularization gives rise to st

Coercion by the Orthodox minority in Israel

In Israel, the Orthodox minority enforces its conception of the good on Israeli-Jews, many of whom do not share their set of beliefs. This is the result of lack of separation between state and religion and the monopoly enjoyed by the Orthodoxy to decide personal matters. Since its establishment in 1948, Israel has been struggling to reconcile the tension between its being a democracy and retaining

Development of a new patient-reported outcome measure for Dupuytren disease : A study protocol

Objectives: Dupuytren disease is a common condition that causes progressive finger contractures resulting in impaired hand function and difficulties in performing daily activities. Patient reported outcome measures (PROMs) are commonly used in research and clinical practice to evaluate treatment outcomes. Both general upper extremity PROMs and Dupuytren-specific PROMs are available, typically deve

Closed and open structures of the eukaryotic magnesium channel Mrs2 reveal the auto-ligand-gating regulation mechanism

The CorA/Mrs2 family of pentameric proteins are cardinal for the influx of Mg2+ across cellular membranes, importing the cation to mitochondria in eukaryotes. Yet, the conducting and regulation mechanisms of permeation remain elusive, particularly for the eukaryotic Mrs2 members. Here, we report closed and open Mrs2 cryo-electron microscopy structures, accompanied by functional characterization. M

Cost-benefit analysis for SHM systems based on minimum detectable parameter change

The expected monetary value is a criterion for assessing the Value of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) and supporting the associated decision making. Its calculation can be challenging, as it requires considering all possible outcomes of the SHM system. In this article a new approach to cost-benefit analysis for SHM systems is proposed, which is based on an estimate of the capability of the SHM

Trends in the place of death in Sweden from 2013 to 2019 – disclosing prerequisites for palliative care

Background: The drive for home care has increasingly impacted the organization and allocation of resources within the Swedish healthcare system. Objectives: With an interest in uncovering prerequisites for palliative care, this study aimed to investigate longitudinal trends in place of death within the adult Swedish population from 2013 to 2019 and examine potential associations between place of d

Molecular characterization of the TUBG1 meshwork’s influence on Cytoskeletal organization

The γ-tubulin (TUBG) meshwork is a central regulator of cellular architecture, orchestrating processes such as microtubule nucleation, mitochondrial organization, and genomic integrity. This study investigates the molecular impact of TUBG depletion on the cytoskeleton. Knockdown of TUBG using single guide RNA disrupted microtubule, vimentin, and lamin B networks while simultaneously reinforcing ac

Can rheumatologists unequivocally diagnose axial spondyloarthritis in patients with chronic back pain of less than 2 years duration? Primary outcome of the 2-year SPondyloArthritis Caught Early (SPACE) cohort

Objectives To investigate the prevalence of axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) in patients with chronic back pain (CBP) of less than 2 years (2y) duration referred to the rheumatologist, the development of diagnosis over time, and patient characteristics of those developing definite (d-)axSpA over 2y. Methods We analysed the 2y data from SPondyloArthritis Caught Early, a European cohort of patients (
