Simultaneous compression, characterization and phase stabilization of GW-level 1.4 cycle VIS-NIR femtosecond pulses using a single dispersion-scan setup

We have temporally characterized, dispersion compensated and carrier-envelope phase stabilized 1.4-cycle pulses (3.2 fs) with 160 mu J of energy at 722 nm using a minimal and convenient dispersion-scan setup. The setup is all inline, does not require interferometric beamsplitting, and uses components available in most laser laboratories. Broadband minimization of third-order dispersion using propa

Evidence for an Isomeric 3/2- State in 53Co

The fragmentation of a 550MeV/u primary beam of Ni-58 on a Be-9 target has been used to measure time-and energy-correlated gamma decays following the implantation of event-by-event discriminated secondary fragments into a Be-9 stopper plate. A new isomeric gamma decay with T-1/2 = 14(6 4) ns and E-gamma = 646.2(2) keV is observed and attributed to the decay of the yrast 3/2-state in Co-53(27)26. T

Compton scattering from C-12 using tagged photons in the energy range 65-115 MeV

Elastic scattering of photons from C-12 has been investigated using quasimonoenergetic tagged photons with energies in the range 65-115 MeV at laboratory angles of 60 degrees, 120 degrees, and 150 degrees. at the Tagged-Photon Facility at the MAX IV Laboratory in Lund, Sweden. A phenomenological model was employed to provide an estimate of the sensitivity of the C-12(gamma,gamma)C-12 cross section

Complete hydrothermal re-equilibration of zircon in the Maniitsoq structure, West Greenland: A 3001Ma minimum age of impact?

Zircon in five samples of variably comminuted, melted, and hydrothermally altered orthogneiss from the Maniitsoq structure of southern West Greenland yield a weighted mean 207Pb/206Pb age of 3000.9 +/- 1.9Ma (ion probe data, n=37). The age data constitute a rare example of pervasive and nearly complete isotopic resetting of zircon during a regional hydrothermal event. Many zircon grains are homoge

How to misuse echo contrast

Background: Primary intracardiac tumours are rare, there are however several entities that can mimic tumours. Contrast echocardiography has been suggested to aid the differentiation of various suspected masses. We present a case where transthoracic echocardiography completely misdiagnosed a left atrial mass, partly due to use of echo contrast. Case presentation: An 80 year-old woman was referred f

Multibeam fluorescence diffuse optical tomography using upconverting nanoparticles.

Fluorescence diffuse optical tomography (FDOT) is a biomedical imaging modality that can be used for localization and quantification of fluorescent molecules inside turbid media. In this ill-posed problem, the reconstruction quality is directly determined by the amount and quality of the information obtained from the boundary measurements. Regularly, more information can be obtained by increasing

A thermomechanical constitutive model for cemented granular materials with quantifiable internal variables. Part I-Theory

This is the first of two papers introducing a novel thermomechanical continuum constitutive model for cemented granular materials. Here, we establish the theoretical foundations of the model, and highlight its novelties. At the limit of no cement, the model is fully consistent with the original Breakage Mechanics model. An essential ingredient of the model is the use of measurable and micro-mechan

Vitamin K-dependent protein S - studies of synthesis, structure and function

This thesis is based on four projects with the overall aim to investigate vitamin K-dependent protein S functions in relation to its structure. The anticoagulant functions of protein S can be divided in three: 1) cofactor for activated protein C (APC), 2) cofactor for tissue factor pathway inhibitor (TFPI) and 3) APC and TFPI-independent anticoagulant functions. Microparticles might be shed from

Stocktaking on the development of posturography for clinical use

This report identifies fundamental problems to be addressed in order to build relevant clinical tests of human balance while standing. The stated purpose of these tests is identification of lesion site and/or definition of functional balance deficits in a specific patient. During a recent consensus meeting (ESCEBD), 60 researchers and experienced clinical users of posturography (14 European countr

Improving inventory accuracy using RFID technology: a case study

Purpose of this paper - The paper explores and describes the impact of radio frequency identification (RFID) technology on inventory accuracy within a production and assembly plant, and proposes a model for assessing the impact of the technology on inventory accuracy. Design/methodology/approach - The empirical investigation, based on case study research, focuses on an RFID implementation at a sup

Preventing and Preparing for Disasters – The Role of a Swedish Local Emergent Citizen Group

Disasters such as the storms that affected Sweden in 2005 and 2007 showed that citizens initially conducted a large part of the disaster response, such as clearing roads, giving psychosocial support to affected neighbours and repairing power lines in collaboration with power companies. As a result of these storms, an Emergent Citizen Group (ECG) was established in a village which continued to work

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering on dual-layer metallic grating structures

Dual-layer Metallic grating (DMG) structures as surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates are studied using benzenethiol as the probe analyte. The DMG structure consists of a SiO2 grating and 100-nm-thick gold coating layers. An enhancement factor of 10(5) is achieved by optimizing the SiO2 grating height within the range from 165 to 550 nm. The enhancement factor dependence on the SiO2

Enhanced solubilisation of the residual fraction of municipal solid waste.

The Swedish ordinance banning the landfilling of organic material after 2005 has led to rapid developments towards waste incineration, while biological alternatives have been less studied. In this study, biological alternatives for enhanced methane production from residual municipal waste (the remaining waste fraction after source separation) are investigated. The strategies investigated were reci

Successful Low-Risk Hematopoietic Cell Therapy in a Mouse Model of Type 1 Gaucher Disease

Hematopoietic stem cell-based gene therapy offers the possibility of permanent correction for genetic disorders of the hematopoietic system. However, optimization of present protocols is required before gene therapy can be safely applied as general treatment of genetic diseases. In this study we have used a mouse model of type 1 Gaucher disease (GD) to demonstrate the feasibility of a low-risk con

Socially Engaged Buddhism: Faith‐inspired drivers of social and political change

Socially Engaged Buddhism: Faith‐inspired drivers of social and political change Chair & introduction. Monica Lindberg Falk, Centre for East and South-East Asian Studies, Lund University, Sweden. This session invites paper that address issues related to socially engaged Buddhism. The Buddhist institutions have always been important actors in society; however, the monks’ and the nuns’ roles h
