A Novel Capacitive Sensor Based on Molecularly Imprinted Nanoparticles as Recognition Elements

Molecularly Imprinted Polymers (MIPs) are synthetic receptors capable of selective binding to their target (template) molecules and, hence, are used as recognition elements in assays and sensors as a replacement for relatively unstable enzymes and antibodies. Herein, we describe a manufacturing-friendly protocol for integration of MIP nanoparticles (nanoMIPs) with a (label-free) capacitive sensor.

Influence of Microstructure and Surface Roughness on Fatigue Initiation in Extruded Aluminum

Comprehensive experimental data on the fatigue properties of extruded Al6082-T6 is used together with crystal plasticity simulations to investigate the microstructure and surface roughness influence on fatigue initiation. Thesurface roughness of the specimens used in the experiments was mapped with White Light Interferometry (WLI) and the location of the fatigue initiation sites was identified and

An Experimental and Numerical Study of Deformation and Decohesion Mechanisms During Peel Testing of a Laminate Packaging Material

Anisotropic peridynamic model—Formulation and implementation

In this work, anisotropy is introduced in a peridynamic model. The spherical influence function is replaced by an ellipsoidal influence function. The model is mathematically formulated and implemented into the source files of LAMMPS, extending the program in a straight-forward manner. The extension ca be applied to other peridynamic model and here it is introduced into elasto-plastic peridynamic m

Pressurised liquid extraction of persistent organic pollutants in environmental analysis

This review updates our knowledge on pressurised liquid extraction, PLE (also known as accelerated solvent extraction and pressurised fluid extraction) of persistent organic pollutants such as polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons and polychlorinated biphenyls from environmental matrices. The basic experimental set-up is presented, and parameters influencing the extraction process are discussed. PLE c

Social Class and Excess Mortality in Sweden During the 1918 Influenza Pandemic

There is no consensus in the literature about the role of socioeconomic factors on influenza mortality during the 1918 pandemic. While some scholars have found that social factors were important, others have not. In this study, we analyzed differences in excess mortality by social class in Sweden during the 1918 pandemic. We analyzed individual-level mortality of the entire population aged 30–59,

Book Review: Animal Rights Activism: A Moral–Sociological Perspective on Social Movements

In recent social movement studies a symbolic framework emphasizing rituals, symbols and master frames has contributed with important insights into the diverse communicative and socio-cultural aspects of contemporary social movements (Alexander, 2006; Benford and Snow, 2000; Jasper, 1997). With the publication of Animal Rights Activism: A Moral–Sociological Perspective on Social Movements a complem

Coupling of ecosystem-scale plant water storage and leaf phenology observed by satellite

Plant water storage is fundamental to the functioning of terrestrial ecosystems by participating in plant metabolism, nutrient and sugar transport, and maintenance of the integrity of the hydraulic system of the plant. However, a global view of the size and dynamics of the water pools stored in plant tissues is still lacking. Here, we report global patterns of seasonal variations in ecosystem-scal

The Berkeley Innovation Index: : A Quantitative Approach to Measure, Track and Forecast Innovation Capability Within Individuals and Organizations

Innovation and entrepreneurship are essential processes for human development, market growth, and technological breakthroughs, and it is vital for economic growth. Despite its importance, innovation is inherently difficult to measure and hence it is almost impossible for an individual or organization to know how they can improve their innovation output or claim that they are great at innovation. T

Estimating the hindered-settling flux function from a batch test in a cone

The hindered-settling velocity function for the modelling, simulation and control of secondary settling tanks can be determined from batch tests. The conventional method is to measure the velocity of the descending sludge-supernatant interface (sludge blanket) as the change in height over time in a vessel with constant cross-sectional area. Each such experiment provides one point on the flux curve
