Evidence for the Dimuon Decay of the Higgs Boson in pp Collisions with the ATLAS Detector

A search for the dimuon decay of the Higgs boson is presented based on pp collision data recorded by ATLAS during Run 3 of the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 165 fb-1 at √s = 13.6 TeV. To enhance the sensitivity, the results are combined with those from Run 2. An excess of events over the background is observed with a significance of 3.4σ (2.5σ expected). The b

Measurements and interpretations of W±Z production cross-sections in pp collisions at √s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

Measurements of integrated and differential cross-sections for W±Z production in proton-proton collisions are presented. The data collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider from 2015 to 2018 at a centre-of-mass energy of s=13 TeV are used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb−1. The W±Z candidate events are reconstructed using leptonic decay modes of the gauge boso

Smart microscopy : adaptive microscope control to improve the way we see life

Smart microscopy lies at the intersection of biology, optics, engineering, and computer science. Unlike traditional microscopes, smart systems actively adapt their acquisition settings in real time based on information extracted from the sample, allowing experiments to navigate competing demands such as resolution, speed and sample health. In this review, we present a practical framework for what

Transforming jet flavour tagging at ATLAS

Jet flavour tagging enables the identification of jets originating from heavy-flavour quarks in proton–proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider, playing a critical role in its physics programmes. This paper presents GN2, a transformer-based flavour tagging algorithm deployed by the ATLAS Collaboration that represents a different methodology compared to previous approaches. Designed to classi

Cystic fibrosis-related diabetes is associated with reduced airway microbial diversity

BackgroundCystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disorder characterized by chronic airway inflammation and lung function decline. CF-related diabetes (CFRD) is the main extrapulmonary complication and it is tightly linked to an impaired lung function, but the underlying mechanisms behind these observations are incompletely understood. In the present study, we aimed to compare airway microbiome composit

Screening for iron deficiency in young women : the predictive validity of a five-item screening instrument (IRON-5)

BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency is the most common micronutrient deficiency worldwide, negatively affecting quality of life and health. Young women are at particularly high risk due to increased iron demands during growth, menstrual blood losses, and dietary habits. There are no official guidelines recommending screening for iron deficiency in healthy young women. This study aimed to develop a screeni

Search for squarks and gluinos in pp collisions at √s = 13 TeV and 13.6 TeV in events with τ-leptons, jets and missing transverse momentum using the ATLAS detector

A search for R-parity-conserving supersymmetry in events with large missing transverse momentum, jets and at least one hadronically decaying τ-lepton is presented. Both gluino and squark pair production are considered, with the cascade decay of each gluino or squark producing either a τ-slepton or a τ-sneutrino. Three channels are examined, requiring either exactly one hadronically decaying τ-lept

Raman spectroscopy in microfluidic chips reveals hyphal scale stress-associated metabolic responses in filamentous soil fungi

Understanding metabolic processes of soil fungi is essential for elucidating their ecological roles in biogeochemical cycles and responses to emergent environmental stressors. Here, we demonstrate the potential of using stable isotope probing Raman (SIP-Raman) microspectroscopy in microfluidics technology-based soil chips to trace glucose metabolism rates and stress responses in laboratory grown f

Neural crest cell biology shapes lizard skull evolution across evolutionary time scales

The vertebrate skull originates from two embryonic lineages, the mesoderm and the neural crest, offering a unique framework to study how developmental mechanisms connect phenotypic variation and evolutionary diversification. Using 3D geometric morphometrics, we analysed skull shape variation in lacertid lizards. Mesoderm- and neural crest-derived bones formed two distinct, conserved modules at bot

Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven approach to climate action and sustainable development

Countries have pledged commitment to the 2030 Sustainable Development Goal (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement to combat climate change. To maximize synergies between SDGs and climate actions (CAs), we evaluate the alignment of national commitment to SDGs and emissions reduction targets by comparing action plans embodied in Voluntary National Review (VNR) reports and the Nationally Determined Contribut

Evaluation of performance of energy efficient hybrid ventilation system and analysis of occupants’ behavior to control windows

Hybrid ventilation systems have become increasingly attractive, because they are considered to provide good indoor air quality (IAQ) with low energy consumption. In this study, we evaluate the performance of a hybrid ventilation system (operating on both mechanical and natural ventilation mode) by monitoring the IAQ (e.g. temperature, humidity, CO2 levels) and the energy consumption of a multifami

Institutional Power-Sharing in Peace Agreements

This paper conducts an analysis of peace agreements that constituted an end to civil conflict, with a specific focus on consociational conflict management in divides societies. Drawing on Arend Lijphart’s theory of consociationalism, and Anna Jastad’s two dimensions (inclusion and decentralization), this study employs a qualitative comparative text analysis of three peace agreements. These are the

NATO & Försvarsvilja: En fråga om identitet, militärkultur eller säkerhetshot? En komparativ intervjustudie av svenska värnpliktiga och anställda soldaters attityder till kollektivt försvar

When Sweden entered NATO in 2024, 200 years of alliance-freedom was upheaved. Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty states that an attack on any of the allied states is to be considered an attack against them all, which means that Swedish soldiers may be deployed in combat on foreign soil. Given that the Swedish Armed Forces have previously only been concerned with protecting their own borders, t

Settling the Narrative: A Strategic Narrative and Social Identity Study of the Israeli Settlement Expansion

The Hamas terrorist attack on October 7th 2023 constituted an event with great impact on both Israel and the Middle East, and much focus has been given to its effects in terms of the war in Gaza. Simultaneously, settlements in the West Bank have risen to unprecedented levels, and have increasingly been given explicit governmental support. Furthermore, official Israeli sovereignty over the West Ban

On Thin Ice: A Discourse Analysis on Cooperation in the Arctic Council following the Russian Invasion of Ukraine in 2022

The Arctic Council has long been portrayed as an arena for stable and depoliticized cooperation, often referred to as exemplifying the idea of Arctic exceptionalism. Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, and the following pause in cooperation, did however raise questions about the resilience of the cooperation in the council. This paper presents a discourse analysis of ministerial meeti

The United Nations Securitization of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse and its Consequences

The peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is one of the most extensive and complex missions ever carried out by the United Nations. Amongst the operational adaptation, one challenge has remained consistent; the crisis of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (SEA) committed by UN peacekeepers against the very civilians they are mandated to protect. This essay aims to explain how t
