Scaled reassigned spectrograms applied to linear transducer signals
This study evaluates the applicability of scaled reassigned spectrograms (ReSTS) on ultrasound radio frequency data obtained with a clinical linear array ultrasound transducer. The ReSTS's ability to resolve axially closely spaced objects in a phantom is compared to the classical cross-correlation method with respect to the ability to resolve closely spaced objects as individual reflectors using u
Effect of Relative Humidity on the Viscoelasticity of Thin Organic Films Studied by Contact Thermal Noise AFM
Material scientists are in need of experimental techniques that facilitate a quantitative mechanical characterization of mesoscale materials and, therefore, their rational design. An example is that of thin organic films, as their performance often relates to their ability to withstand use without damage. The mechanical characterization of thin films has benefited from the emergence of the atomic
Effects of Mob-Grazing on Soil and Range Quality Vary with Plant Species and Season in a Semiarid Grassland
Mob-grazing involves maintaining high densities of livestock for short periods so that most plants are either eaten or trampled, followed by long rest periods. This practice has been proposed as a mechanism to increase soil carbon (C) storage and range quality. However, mob-grazing has not universally achieved these objectives, possibly because many factors influence the effects of grazing on soil
Chemical bonding of termination species in 2D carbides investigated through valence band UPS/XPS of Ti3C2T xMXene
MXenes are technologically interesting 2D materials that show potential in numerous applications. The properties of the MXenes depend at large extent on the selection of elements that build the 2D MX-layer. Another key parameter for tuning the attractive material properties is the species that terminate the surfaces of the MX-layers. Although being an important parameter, experimental studies on t
Oxygen chemistry of halogen-doped CeO2(111)
We study substitutional fluorine, chlorine and bromine impurities at CeO2(111), and their effects on the oxygen chemistry of the surface, using density functional theory. We find that impurity formation results in a halide ion and one Ce3+ion for all three halogens, although the formation energy depends strongly on the identity of the halogen; however, once formed, all three halogens exhibit a sim
An algorithm to detect non-background signals in greenhouse gas time series from European tall tower and mountain stations
We present a statistical framework to identify regional signals in station-based CO2 time series with minimal local influence. A curve-fitting function is first applied to the detrended time series to derive a harmonic describing the annual CO2 cycle. We then combine a polynomial fit to the data with a short-term residual filter to estimate the smoothed cycle and define a seasonally adjusted noise
Temporal pulse quality of a Yb:YAG burst-mode laser post-compressed in a multi-pass cell
Nonlinear pulse post-compression represents an efficient method for ultrashort, high-quality laser pulse production. The temporal pulse quality is, however, limited by amplitude and phase modulations intrinsic to post-compression. We here characterize in frequency and time domain with high dynamic range individual post-compressed pulses within laser bursts comprising 100-kHz-rate pulse trains. We
EC-Earth3-AerChem : A global climate model with interactive aerosols and atmospheric chemistry participating in CMIP6
This paper documents the global climate model EC-Earth3-AerChem, one of the members of the EC-Earth3 family of models participating in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6). EC-Earth3-AerChem has interactive aerosols and atmospheric chemistry and contributes to the Aerosols and Chemistry Model Intercomparison Project (AerChemMIP). In this paper, we give an overview of the model

Optimized estimation of leaf mass per area with a 3d matrix of vegetation indices
Leaf mass per area (LMA) is a key plant functional trait closely related to leaf biomass. Estimating LMA in fresh leaves remains challenging due to its masked absorption by leaf water in the short-wave infrared region of reflectance. Vegetation indices (VIs) are popular variables used to estimate LMA. However, their physical foundations are not clear and the generalization ability is limited by th
Two-dimensional electron gas at wurtzite–zinc-blende InP interfaces induced by modulation doping
The quality, such as long-range correlation and mobility, of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) is limited by, among other factors, interface roughness, which is inherent to the use of compositional heterostructures. Polytypic heterostructures have atomically sharp interfaces and minimal strain, decreasing the interface roughness, which may increase the mobility and long-range correlation of 2D

Optical studies of crystal phase heterostructures
III-V semiconductors are commonly used for a variety of optical applications, such as LED based lights and solar sells. Most III-V semiconductors, such as GaAs and InP, exhibit the zinc-blende (zb) crystal structure, but in the form of nanowires it is also possible to create them in the wurtzite (wz) crystal structure. This allows for the creation of novel heterostructures consisting of the same c

The role of cross-linking in the scratch resistance of organic coatings: an investigation using atomic force microscopy
Understanding how the composition of organic coatings influences their ability to resist surface damage during use remains a challenge. A relevant potential influence is that of cross-linking density. This parameter is frequently used for tailoring the mechanical properties of organic coatings and it manifests itself in terms of scratch resistance. However, the mechanisms that influence scratch re
