APOLIPOPROTEIN M

Apolipoprotein M (apoM) is composed of 188 amino acids and has an apparent molecular weight of 25 kDa. ApoM belongs to the lipocalin protein superfamily, and is found in all major lipoprotein classes, although the majority of apoM is found in high density lipoprotein, HDL. In apoM, the signal peptide is retained in the mature protein. ApoM with a cleavable signal peptide was constructed. In contra

K to pi pi decays in SU(2) Chiral Perturbation Theory

We study the decays $K\to\pi\pi$ in one-loop two-flavour Chiral Perturbation Theory. We provide arguments why the calculation of the coefficient of the pionic chiral logarithm $\logm = M^2\log M^2$ is unique and then perform the calculation. As a check we perform the reduction of the known three-flavour result. Our result can be used to perform the extrapolation to the physical pion mass of direc

Acoustic microfluidic chip technology to facilitate automation of phage display selection

Modern tools in proteomics require access to large arrays of specific binders for use in multiplex array formats, such as microarrays, to decipher complex biological processes. Combinatorial protein libraries offer a solution to the generation of collections of specific binders, but unit operations in the process to isolate binders from such libraries must be automatable to ensure an efficient pro

Development of collective structures over noncollective excitations in Nd-139

High-spin states in Nd-139 were investigated using the reaction Zr-96(Ca-48,5n) at a beam energy of 195 MeV and gamma-ray coincidences were acquired with the Euroball spectrometer. Apart from several dipole bands at medium excitation energy, three quadrupole bands have been observed at high spin. Linking transitions connecting two of the high-spin bands to low-energy states have been observed. Cal

Stretch-Sensitive Down-Regulation of the miR-144/451 Cluster in Vascular Smooth Muscle and Its Role in AMP-Activated Protein Kinase Signaling.

Vascular smooth muscle cells are constantly exposed to mechanical force by the blood pressure, which is thought to regulate smooth muscle growth, differentiation and contractile function. We have previously shown that the expression of microRNAs (miRNAs), small non-coding RNAs, is essential for regulation of smooth muscle phenotype including stretch-dependent contractile differentiation. In this s

The Gaia-ESO Survey: Empirical determination of the precision of stellar radial velocities and projected rotation velocities

Context. The Gaia-ESO Survey (GES) is a large public spectroscopic survey at the European Southern Observatory Very Large Telescope. Aims. A key aim is to provide precise radial velocities (RVs) and projected equatorial velocities (v sin i) for representative samples of Galactic stars, which will complement information obtained by the Gaia astrometry satellite. Methods. We present an analysis to e

Self-rated health does not predict 10-year weight change among middle-aged adults in a longitudinal population study

Background: There is a worldwide obesity epidemic, but lack of a simple method, applicable for research or clinical use, to identify individuals at high risk of weight gain. Therefore, the relationship of self-rated health and 10-year percent weight change was evaluated to determine if self-rated health would predict weight change. Methods: From 1990 to 2008, adults aged 30, 40, 50 and 60 years we

Gaia-ESO Survey: Analysis of pre-main sequence stellar spectra

Context. The Gaia-ESO Public Spectroscopic Survey is obtaining high-quality spectroscopy of some 100 000 Milky Way stars using the FLAMES spectrograph at the VLT, down to V = 19 mag, systematically covering all the main components of the Milky Way and providing the first homogeneous overview of the distributions of kinematics and chemical element abundances in the Galaxy. Observations of young ope

Control of voice intensity.

This study examined the control of voice intensity using acoustic and aerodynamic recordings. A total of 34 subjects participated half of them with and half without song training, 21 females and 13 males. The subjects produced the syllable sequence /papapa/ while the acoustic signal, the oral air flow, and the oral air pressure were recorded using the Kay-Pentax Phonatory Aerodynamic System. The o

The effect of long-term lactobacilli (lactic acid bacteria) enteral treatment on the central nervous system of growing rats

The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between Consumption of large doses of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and the behaviour and brain morphobiochemistry of normal growing rats. Four groups of rats were treated with LAB Cultures twice daily for 6 months. The control group received 1 ml of saline per treatment, while two experimental groups received I nil of living bacteria (Lactobacill

Origin of a surface state above the Fermi level on Ge(001) and Si(001) studied by temperature-dependent ARPES and LEED

Variable temperature photoemission studies in the literature have revealed the presence of a surface state above the Fermi level on clean Ge(001). We present photoemission and low energy electron diffraction results from Ge(001) obtained between 185 and 760 K. Our measurements show a peak above the Fermi level with a maximum intensity at a sample temperature of around 625 K. At higher temperatures

Empowerment is a concept and a method in social work associated with liberation from oppression. Some paradoxes inherent in the concept and method of empowerment, however, lead to questioning the contradiction between freedom and force that is usually framed by “empowerment”. This dissertation investigates how empowerment is created in a concrete language and an integration project directed toward

Human Embryonic Stem Cells - Constitutive Gene Expression and Differentiation Towards Definitive Endoderm and Posterior Foregut Endoderm

Abstract More than 300 million people are suffering from diabetes worldwide and the numbers of diabetic patients are increasing. Today´s treatments mainly rely on daily insulin injections. This help people to control blood glucose levels but still many patients suffer from the many complications associated with diabetes. Transplantations of islet cells are an alternative treatment that could help

Effect of a proximal substrate on plasmon propagation in silver nanowires

We investigate how the properties of a nearby substrate modify the excitation and propagation of plasmons in subwavelength silver wires. With decreasing nanowire-substrate separation, the in-coupling efficiency shows strongly oscillatory behavior due to coherent interference. The plasmon damping increases with decreasing separation due to an increased coupling of the nanowire plasmons to the photo
