Attraction modulated by spacing of pheromone components and anti-attractants in a bark beetle and a moth

Orientation for insects in olfactory landscapes with high semiochemical diversity may be a challenging task. The partitioning of odor plumes into filaments that are interspersed with pockets of ‘clean air’ may help filament discrimination and upwind flight to attractive sources in the face of inhibitory signals. We studied the effect of distance between odor sources on trap catches of the beetle,

The year in osteoporosis Volume I

Drawing on the expertise of a distinguished international team, this book contains 200 recent papers in the peer-reviewed literature that will affect the practice of physicians managing osteoporotic patients. Each paper is summarized, reviewed, and placed in clinical context. Coverage includes the underlying causes of osteoporosis and the latest differing views on prevention and non-pharmacologica

The surface complex of Euglena gracilis. Involvement in cellular movements and biochemical and molecular analyses of the components

The flagellate Euglena gracilis shows rhythms in phototaxis and cell shape changes between oblong and round. Artificial UV-B radiation of 0.5 W m-2 caused a loss in phototaxis, but the peak of activity occurred at the same time as for control cells. The transition from round to oblong cell shape was slower after UV-B radiation, but the amplitude between the roundest and the most oblong cell shape

Climate change effects on design thermal actions for concrete structures

The temperature distribution in a concrete structure varies due to complex interactions with the surrounding climate. Solar radiation, air temperature, wind speed and long-wave radiation all affect the temperature in the material, and may cause movements in the longitudinal and transversal directions. If these movements are restrained, stresses and strains can be induced which may contribute to cr

An acoustic study of accentuation in Estonian Swedish compounds

This study, addressing the analysis of pitch patterns in Estonian Swedish compounds, enables us to draw some preliminary conclusions about the characteristics of accentuation in this little studied regional variety of Swedish. The analysis in the first part of the paper was inspired by the classification of Edvin Lagman (1979) who on the basis of auditory analysis distinguished between four accent

Aroma characterisation and retention after heat treatment and drying of fruits using extraction and GC-MS analysis

Popular Abstract in English Fruits are a key complement to the diet of many people in the southern region of Africa, especially in rural areas. maphilwa (Vangueria infausta L.), maçanica (Ziziphus mauritiana), maçala (Strychnos spinosa), mapsincha (Salacia kraussi), cajú (Anacardium accidentale L.), mavungwa (Landolpia kirki) are some of the most commonly found fruits in sub-Saharan Africa, particThis study concerns the identification and characterisation of volatile components of fruits, and evaluation of the effect of heat treatment and drying on retention or loss of volatiles of fruits. The investigation included developing a procedure to extract volatile components from the fruit matrix, a purification step, separation, identification and quantification. Initial experiments with Vangue

First Identification of Excited States in 59Zn

Excited states in 59Zn were observed for the first time following the fusion-evaporation reaction 24Mg + 40Ca at a beam energy of 60 MeV. The GASP array in conjunction with the ISIS Silicon ball and the NeutronRing allowed for the detection of n-rays in coincidence with evaporated light particles. The mirror symmetry of 59Zn and 59Cu is discussed.

Molecular Genetic Studies of the Blood Group ABO Locus in Man

The ABO blood group system is undoubtedly the most important genetic and phenotypic marker in clinical transfusion medicine. The A and B determinants are immunodominant, terminally located carbohydrate residues of glycoconjugates on erythrocytes and other cell surfaces. The enzymes responsible for assembly of these structures are glycosyltransferases encoded by the ABO genes on chromosome nine. T
