Liberty Revisited. A Historical and Systematic Account of an Egalitarian Conception of Liberty and Legitimacy

Popular Abstract in Swedish Denna avhandling har tre huvudsakliga mål. This dissertation argues for an interpretation of liberty in terms of non-domination rather than non-interference, that non-domination can work as an independent criterion of political legitimacy, and that non-domination includes an approximation of equality in socioeconomic goods. In the first part, four theories of liberty and power – those of Kant, Locke, J. S. Mill and H. Taylor, and Wollstone

Mutual Information of IID complex Gaussian signals on block Rayleigh-faded channels

We present a method to compute, quickly and efficiently, the mutual information achieved by an IID (independent identically distributed) complex Gaussian input on a block Rayleigh-faded channel. The method accommodates both scalar and MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) settings. Operationally, the mutual information thus computed represents the highest spectral efficiency that can be attained u

Preliminary Results of Combining Thread-Level Speculation and Just-in-Time Compilation in Google’s V8

We present the first implementation of Thread-Level Speculation in combination with Just-in-time compilation. The implementation is done in Google’s V8, a well-known JavaScript engine, and evaluated on 15 popular web application executing on 2, 4, and 8 core computers. Our results show an average speedup of 2.9 on 4 cores, without any JavaScript code modifications. Further, we have found that the

Building rich and grounded robot world models from sensors and knowledge resources: A conceptual spaces approach

Robots interacting with other agents in rich information landscapes and complex dynamic physical environments require sophisticated and robust concept and knowledge management capabilities if they are to solve problems, communicate, learn and exhibit intelligent behaviours. In this paper we describe how conceptual spaces provide a powerful substrate upon which to build effective concept and knowle

Herschel's "Cold Debris Disks": Background Galaxies or Quiescent Rims of Planetary Systems?

Infrared excesses associated with debris disk host stars detected so far peak at wavelengths around ~100 μm or shorter. However, 6 out of 31 excess sources studied in the Herschel Open Time Key Programme, DUNES, have been seen to show significant—and in some cases extended—excess emission at 160 μm, which is larger than the 100 μm excess. This excess emission has been attributed to circumstellar d

International Environmental Law and the Search for Harmony with Nature: A Critical Inquiry into the Metaphysical Underpinnings of the Legal Discourse on Environmental Protection

From this claim has emerged a call that entreats us to approach the problem of the deteriorating natural environment by i

Legal framework for the sustainable production of non-eatable products of an agricultural origin: the example of biofuels

Issues of sustainable agriculture have much relevance and urgency for the sustainable production of non-eatable products that have an agricultural origin, such as biofuels. In the chapter the opinion is expressed that joint legal regulations on sustainable use of natural resources and sustainable farming methods for eatable and non-eatable products of an agricultural origin can be an efficient sol
