Application of SLM extraction for investigation of metal-humic acid bindings

Supported liquid membrane (SLM) extraction of Cu(II), with di(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate in kerosene as organic phase, has been studied using a flat PTFE membrane. The influence of donor phase flow rate on the extraction efficiency and the mass transfer coefficient was investigated. The dependence of extraction efficiency of Cu(II) on the presence of the humic acids (HA) in donor phase was also inves

Self-assembled heterogeneous argon/neon core-shell clusters studied by photoelectron spectroscopy

Clusters formed by a coexpansion process of argon and neon have been studied using synchrotron radiation. Electrons from interatomic Coulombic decay as well as ultraviolet and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to determine the heterogeneous nature of the clusters and the cluster structure. Binary clusters of argon and neon produced by coexpansion are shown to exhibit a core-shell structur

An improved bound on Boolean matrix multiplication for highly clustered data

We consider the problem of computing the product of two n x n Boolean matrices A and B. For two 0 - I strings s = s(1)s(2) .... s(m) and u = u(1)u(2) ... u(m), an extended Hamming distance, eh(s, u), between the strings, is defined by a recursive equation eh(s, u) = eh(s(l+1) ... s(m), u(l+1) ... u(m)) + (s(1) + u(1) mod 2), where l is the maximum number, s.t., s(j) = s, and u(j) = u(1) for j = Fo

Hand eczema classification: a cross-sectional, multicentre study of the aetiology and morphology of hand eczema

Hand eczema is a long-lasting disease with a high prevalence in the background population. The disease has severe, negative effects on quality of life and sometimes on social status. Epidemiological studies have identified risk factors for onset and prognosis, but treatment of the disease is rarely evidence based, and a classification system for different subdiagnoses of hand eczema is not agreed

Differential expression of osteopontin and bone sialoprotein in bone metastasis of breast and prostate carcinoma

Breast and prostate cancer often metastasise to the skeleton. Interestingly, the histopathological characteristics of the bone lesions that arise from these two cancer types differ. Breast tumours give rise to metastases in the skeleton with a mixed lytic/sclerotic pattern, whereas a predominantly sclerotic pattern is seen in metastases from prostate tumours. Osteopontin (OPN) and bone sialoprotei

Body burden and excretion of 137-Cs and 40K in subjects from the south of Sweden

The equivalent biological half-times, Te, of 137Cs and 40K in a South-Swedish urban population have been determined through whole-body measurements and urinary excretion analysis. The Te - values for 137Cs found in males were on average, significantly lower than what is given in the literature. The relatively low average whole-body content of 40K,QK, in the males could explain the discrepancy, tak

Effect of a-fluoromethylhistidine-evoked histamine depletion on ultrastructure of endocrine cells in acid-producing mucosa of stomach in mouse, rat and hamster

The oxyntic mucosa of the mammalian stomach is rich in endocrine cells, such as ECL cells, A-like cells, somatostatin cells, D1/P cells and, in some species, enterochromaffin cells. The various endocrine cell types can be distinguished on the basis of their characteristic cytoplasmic granules and vesicles. The ECL cells contain numerous large secretory vesicles and relatively few, small electron-d

Exact integration of constitutive equations in elasto-plasticity

A unified approach is presented for establishing exact integration of the constitutive equations in elastoplasticity, assuming the total strain-rate direction to be constant. This unified approach includes all previous exact integration procedures as special cases and, in addition, some new closed-form solutions are derived for combined kinematic and isotropic hardening. Special emphasis is laid o

Concealed conduction and dual pathway physiology of the atrioventricular node

AV Nodal Duality and Concealment. Introduction: Both concealed conduction and dual pathway physiology are important electrophysiologic characteristics of the AV node. The interaction of AV nodal concealment and duality, however, is not clearly understood. Methods and Results: The properties of AV conduction curves in the presence and absence of a conditioning blocked impulse were prospectively stu

Nuclear physics - A non-disappearing magic trick

Well-established models of nuclei describe properties such as shells and magic numbers. But how do these predictions stand up to scrutiny for exotic, unstable nuclei? Pretty well, according to the latest study.

Unidirectional electron flow in a nanometer-scale semiconductor channel: A self-switching device

By tailoring the boundary of a narrow semiconductor channel to break its symmetry, we have realized a type of nanometer-scale nonlinear device, which we refer to as self-switching device (SSD). An applied voltage V not only changes the potential profile along the channel direction, but also either widens or narrows the effective channel depending on the sign of V. This results in a diode-like char

Comparison of Direct and Mediated Electron Transfer for Cellobiose Dehydrogenase from Phanerochaete sordida.

Direct and mediated electron transfer (DET and MET) between the enzyme and electrodes were compared for cellobiose dehydrogenase (CDH) from the basidiomycete Phanerochaete sordida (PsCDH). For DET, PsCDH was adsorbed at pyrolytic graphite (PG) electrodes while for MET the enzyme was covalently linked to a low potential Os redox polymer. Both types of electrodes were prepared in the presence of sin

Anomalous surfactant diffusion in a living polymer system

Random processes are generally described by Gaussian statistics as formulated by the central limit theorem. However, there exists a large number of exceptions to this rule that can be found in a variety of fields. Diffusion processes are often analyzed by the scaling law < r(2)>similar to t(2 beta), where the second moment of the diffusion propagator or molecular mean square displacement, < r(2)>,

PSA kinetics provide improved prediction of survival in metastatic hormone-refractory prostate cancer

OBJECTIVES To assess the value of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) kinetics in predicting survival and relate this to the baseline variables in men with metastatic hormone-refractory prostate cancer (HRPC). METHODS The data from 417 men with HRPC were included in a. logistic regression model that included hemoglobin, PSA, alkaline phosphatase, Soloway score, and performance status pain analgesic sc

Particle-species dependent modification of jet-induced correlations in Au plus Au collisions at root s(NN)=200 GeV

Measurements in Au + Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV of jet correlations for a trigger hadron at intermediate transverse momentum (p(T,trig)) with associated mesons or baryons at lower p(T,assoc) indicate strong modification of the away-side jet. The ratio of jet-associated baryons to mesons increases with centrality and p(T,assoc). For the most central collisions, the ratio is similar to th

Arsenic mobilisation in a new well field for drinking water production along the Red River, Nam Du, Hanoi

Arsenic enrichment of groundwater in the Red River (Song Hong) delta in Vietnam was discovered in 1998. Several studies performed in this area found concentrations of As exceeding the WHO-guideline of 10 lg/L. This study focuses on an area south of Hanoi city, Nam Du, where a new well field came into operation in 2004. The new well field is situated on the bank along the Red River in order to faci
