Natural corollaries and recovery after acute ACL injury : The NACOX cohort study protocol
Introduction Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury can result in joint instability, decreased functional performance, reduced physical activity and quality of life and an increased risk for post-traumatic osteoarthritis. Despite the development of new treatment techniques and extensive research, the complex and multifaceted nature of ACL injury and its consequences are yet to be fully understood
Novel genetic associations for blood pressure identified via gene-alcohol interaction in up to 570K individuals across multiple ancestries
Heavy alcohol consumption is an established risk factor for hypertension; the mechanism by which alcohol consumption impact blood pressure (BP) regulation remains unknown. We hypothesized that a genome-wide association study accounting for gene-alcohol consumption interaction for BP might identify additional BP loci and contribute to the understanding of alcohol-related BP regulation. We conducted
Additional perspectives on ACL rupture is a single leg injury but a double leg problem...'
Registry-based randomised clinical trial : Efficient evaluation of generic pharmacotherapies in the contemporary era
Randomised clinical trials are the gold standard for testing the effectiveness of clinical interventions. However, increasing complexity and associated costs may limit their application in the investigation of key cardiovascular knowledge gaps such as the re-evaluation of generic pharmacotherapies. The registry-based randomised clinical trial (RRCT) leverages data sampling from nationwide quality
CM-Score : A validated scoring system to predict CDKN2A germline mutations in melanoma families from Northern Europe
Background: Several factors have been reported that influence the probability of a germline CDKN2A mutation in a melanoma family. Our goal was to create a scoring system to estimate this probability, based on a set of clinical features present in the patient and his or her family. Methods: Five clinical features and their association with CDKN2A mutations were investigated in a training cohort of
Danegaptide for primary percutaneous coronary intervention in acute myocardial infarction patients : A phase 2 randomised clinical trial
Objectives: Reperfusion immediately after reopening of the infarct-related artery in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) may cause myocardial damage in addition to the ischaemic insult (reperfusion injury). The gap junction modulating peptide danegaptide has in animal models reduced this injury. We evaluated the effect of danegaptide on myocardial salvage in patients with STEMI. Met
Search for top-squark pair production in final states with one lepton, jets, and missing transverse momentum using 36 fb−1 of √s=13 TeV pp collision data with the ATLAS detector
The results of a search for the direct pair production of top squarks, the supersymmetric partner of the top quark, in final states with one isolated electron or muon, several energetic jets, and missing transverse momentum are reported. The analysis also targets spin-0 mediator models, where the mediator decays into a pair of dark-matter particles and is produced in association with a pair of top
Search for supersymmetry in final states with missing transverse momentum and multiple b-jets in proton-proton collisions at √s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector
A search for supersymmetry involving the pair production of gluinos decaying via third-generation squarks into the lightest neutralino (χ˜10) is reported. It uses LHC proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy s=13 TeV with an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb−1 collected with the ATLAS detector in 2015 and 2016. The search is performed in events containing large missing transverse mom
Pharmacotherapy for Nocturia
PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To assess current pharmacological principles used for treatment of nocturia/nocturnal polyuria.RECENT FINDINGS: The pathophysiology of nocturia is often multifactorial, but two main mechanisms have been identified, occurring alone or in combination: low functional bladder capacity and nocturnal polyuria. The multifactorial pathophysiology not only implies several possible target
Towards determination of individual glandular dose
Due to variations in amount and distribution of glandular breast tissue among women, the mean glandular dose (MGD) can be a poor measure of the individual glandular dose. Therefore, to improve the basis for risk assessment related to radiation dose from breast X-ray examinations, the distribution should be considered. Breast tomosynthesis (BT) is an imaging technique that may be used as an alterna
Multi-flowrate Optimization of the Loading Phase of a Preparative Chromatographic Separation
This contribution consists of a multi-flow rate optimization method to maximize the key performance indicators, yield, degree of resin utilization and productivity for a chromatographic loading step. The protein adsorption to the resin is modeled using a mechanistic column model with a steric mass action adsorption isotherm. The model was used to optimize the flow rate trajectories and the loading
Songs that carry transformation : Pentecostal praise and worship rituals in Nairobi, Kenya
In this article, the theological meaning of transformation is examined from the vantage point of a local Pentecostal church in Nairobi, Kenya, and its liturgical practices. The church under study is the Woodley branch of Christ is the Answer Ministries (CITAM Woodley), formerly Nairobi Pentecostal Church (NPC) Woodley, and data was collected through field research. Arguing with the help of Steven
Teaching without learning : Is it OK With weak AI?
Two different learning models for a teachable agent were tested with respect to perceived intelligence, the protégé effect, and learning in Swedish grade 5 and 6 students. A strong positive correlation was found between perceived intelligence and the protégé effect, but no significant differences were found between the two different implementations of the learning algorithm. The results suggest th
Health-seeking nomads and faith-healing in a medically pluralistic context in Mbeya, Tanzania
The popularity of faith-healing in sub-Saharan Africa has been widely acknowledged in research, but mostly treated as a phenomenon apart, instead of being viewed in relation to other modes of healing. In this article I focus on the reasons why believers choose faith-healing in a medically pluralistic situation and how they see other healing options available in a locally founded Charismatic church
Do preschoolers ‘Game the system’? : a case study of children’s intelligent (Mis)use of a teachable agent based play-&-learn game in mathematics
For learning to take place in digital learning environments, learners need to use educational software – more or less – as intended. However, previous studies show that some school children, instead of trying to learn and master a skill, choose to systematically exploit or outsmart the system to gain progress. But what about preschoolers? The present study explores the presence of this kind of beh
Interleukin-25 reduces Th17 cells and inflammatory responses in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells
Background: The absence of interleukin-25 (IL-25) favors the induction of Th1 and Th17 immune responses in mice. Th1 immune responses have been associated with the pathology of atherosclerosis, a lipid and inflammation driven disease of the arterial wall. Purpose of research: To evaluate the effect of IL-25 on human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (hPBMCs) in the presence and absence of oxidize
Antimicrobial Stewardship : What We All Just Need to Know
Antimicrobial stewardship programmes including a multidisciplinary team of urologists, infectious disease specialists, and microbiologists reduce the total use of antibiotics in urological care without jeopardising the patient outcome. It is a recommended tool for education and feedback.
Narratives of change : Healing and pentecostal belonging in zanzibar
In the predominantly Muslim context of Zanzibar, Pentecostal Christianity is slowly on the rise as a result of an influx of labor migrants from mainland Tanzania. A paramount feature in these churches is the provision of divine healing and deliverance from spiritual affliction. This article analyses how narratives of healing in one of Zanzibar's major Pentecostal churches, the City Christian Cente
Spatially-resolved hydrogen atom detection in flames using backward lasing
We report on an experimental demonstration of spatially-resolved detection of atomic hydrogen in flames using a single-ended configuration. The lasing signal in a backward direction is obtained by two-photon pumping with 205-nm femtosecond laser pulses.
