Lidocaine for treatment of severe seizures in newborn infants. I. Clinical effects and cerebral electrical activity monitoring

The anticonvulsive effect of lidocaine was evaluated in 46 newborn infants with severe, recurrent seizures. Before the lidocaine all infants were being given phenobarbital, and 22 infants were also treated with diazepam. Different dosages of lidocaine were tested. A loading dose of 2 mg/kg followed by i.v. infusion of 6 mg/kg/hour was the most effective dosage and had an immediate anticonvulsive e

A general formalism for metabolic control analysis

A general formalism for Metabolic Control Analysis is derived using general sensitivity analysis and structural information of the metabolic pathway inherent in the stoichiometry matrix. The equations derived provide a general procedure for calculating the control coefficients from the elasticity coefficients using matrix algebra, and is valid for any pathway stoichiometry. The procedure diminishe

Physical activity and the young female skeleton

Frakturerna drabbar kvinnor oftare än män, något som till stor del beror på att nivåerna av det kvinnliga könshormoThe aim of this thesis was to identify the influence of calcium, physical activity and detraining on bone mass and bone size in girls and young women. We hypothesised that calcium intake above a specific level does not enhance the accrual of bone mineral, that exercise predominantly influences the skeleton in the early pubertal period and that reduced training is followed by a loss of exercise-ind

On a cholinergic motor innervation of the rat urethra

Choline acetyltransferase activity was demonstrated in the proximal part of the male rat urethra, indicating a cholinergic innervation of this tissue. The cholinergic nerve fibres emanated evidently from the pelvic nerves, since bilateral removal of the pelvic ganglion caused a major fall in the activity of this enzyme. The muscle activity of the circular layer of the proximal urethra was recorded

Size-selective predation on pelagic microorganisms in Arctic freshwaters

Herbivorous zooplankton may have a pronounced influence on pelagic microorganisms in Arctic freshwaters. We quantified experimentally the size-selective feeding of several zooplankton groups on pelagic microorganisms in high Arctic tundra systems. Our experiments and field study focused on dominant herbivores in Arctic freshwaters, including the cladoceran Dophnia, the copepod Diaptomus and the an

Early Permian palynostratigraphy of the northern Heimefrontfjella mountain range, Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica

Permian rocks from five localities in the northern Heimefrontfjella have been investigated palynologically and identifiable palynomorphs are present in samples from three of them, namely A and C in Milorgfjella and Lidkvarvet in Sivorgfjella. Eighty palynomorph taxa are recognized and two new combinations are proposed, Converrucosisporites gradegranulatus (Anderson) Lindstrom, comb, nov, and Canna

Percutaneous transluminal angioplasty of crural arteries: diabetes and other factors influencing outcome

OBJECTIVE: to evaluate the efficacy of percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) of the crural arteries. PATIENTS AND METHODS: a retrospective review of patients treated with PTA of at least one crural artery during an 8-year period (1990--1997). RESULTS: one hundred and fifty-five legs in 140 consecutive patients (mean age 74 years, range 38--91 years) were treated. In 76% a more proximal lesio
