Relationship between testosterone levels, insulin sensitivity, and mitochondrial function in men
OBJECTIVE - The goal of this study was to examine the relationship between serum testosterone levels and insulin sensitivity and mitochondrial function in men, RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS - A total of 60 men (mean age 60.5 +/- 1.2 years) had a detailed hormonal and metabolic evaluation. Insulin sensitivity was measured Using a hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp. Mitochondrial function was assessed
Generation of renal tubules at the interface of an artificial interstitium
During kidney development a multitude of tubular portions is formed. Little knowledge is available by which cellbiological mechanism a cluster of embryonic cells is able to generate the threedimensional structure of a tubule. However, this know-how is most important in tissue engineering approaches such as the generation of an artificial kidney module or for the therapy of renal diseases using ste

Hydrogen analysis by p-p scattering in geological material
It has been concluded by geologists that a significant amount of hydrogen is stored as point defects in nominally anhydrous minerals. Determination of the amount of hydrogen bound in these minerals is a step towards determining the total water content of the earth mantle as well as comprehending its internal water cycle. The possibility to measure hydrogen in thin geological samples by elastic p-p
Predicting spontaneous termination of atrial fibrillation with time-frequency information
Our approach to predicting spontaneous termination of atrial fibrillation (AF) is based on parameters derived from the time-frequency distribution of the residual ECG signal, resulting from spatiotemporal cancellation of QRST complexes. Each consecutive, logarithmically scaled spectrum of the time-frequency distribution of the residual ECG is modeled as a frequency shifted and amplitude scaled ver
Total abrogation of collagen II-induced arthritis and the B cell response to type II collagen using suboptimal doses of a topoisomerase II antagonist.
BACKGROUND: Collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) is the most commonly used model of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In both CIA and RA there is an increase in the cellular content of the synovium, this being dominated by macrophages. OBJECTIVE: To assess the impact of etoposide, a topoisomerase II antagonist known to induce monocyte apoptosis, on the development of CIA. METHODS: Mice were primed and booste

The association of DNA and stable catanionic amino acid-based vesicles
Cationic surfactants associate strongly to DNA and compact but are often toxic. The interaction of some novel cationic amino acid-based surfactants, which may enhance transfection and appear to be nontoxic, is described. A cationic arginine-based surfactant, ALA, gives in combination with anionic surfactants spontaneously stable vesicles, and special attention is given to the association of these

En internationell fredspolitiker vid 1900-talets början - Anna Bugge Wicksell.
Letters and notes that expose collaboration in and between different creative networks and ethical-political theorists, governmental counsellors and personalities from 1886 to 1928 are now more accessible in the Anna Bugge Wicksell collection at the University Library of Lund. Anna Bugge Wicksell had central functions in The Neutral Conference for Continuous Mediation, after which she was co-opted
First stars. I. The extreme r-element rich, iron-poor halo giant CS31082-001. Implications for the r--process site(s) and radioactive cosmochronology
We present a high-resolution ( R= 75 000, S/ N ) spectroscopic analysis of the bright ( V= 11.7), extreme halo giant CS 31082-001([Fe/H] = -2.9), obtained in an ESO-VLT Large Programme dedicated to very metal-poor stars. We find CS 31082-001 to be extremely rich in r-process elements, comparable in this respect only to the similarly metal-poor, but carbon-enriched, giant CS 22892-052. As a result

Collective excitations and band termination in Nb-85
High-spin states in Nb-85 were studied using the GAMMASPHERE Ge detector array and the MICROBALL charged-particle detector system. Three gamma-ray cascades with collective rotational characteristics were observed. One of the bands exhibits a forking at the top, most likely reflecting the termination of one branch into a favoured non-collective, near spherical state. The data are interpreted in ter

Internal water molecules and magnetic relaxation in agarose gels
Agarose gels have long been known to produce exceptionally large enhancements of the water H-1 and H-2 magnetic relaxation rates. The molecular basis for this effect has not been clearly established, despite its potential importance for a wide range of applications of agarose gels, including their use as biological tissue models in magnetic resonance imaging. To resolve this issue, we have measure

Liposuction of arm lymphoedema.
Breast cancer is the most common disease in women, and up to 38% develop lymphedema of the arm following mastectomy, standard axillary node dissection and postoperative irradiation. Limb reductions have been reported utilising various conservative therapies such as manual lymph and pressure therapy. Some patients with long-standing pronounced lymphedema do not respond to these conservative treatme
