Chromosomal damage in peripheral blood lymphocytes of newly diagnosed cancer patients and healthy controls

Background: The majority of human cancers arise from cells unable to maintain genomic stability. Recent prospective studies indicated that enhanced chromosomal aberrations (CAs) frequencies are predictive of gastrointestinal and lung cancers. However, studies on incident cancer patients are lacking; thus, we investigated chromosomal damage in newly diagnosed cancer patients and healthy individuals

Capsule Endoscopy Is Superior to Small-bowel Follow-through and Equivalent to Ileocolonoscopy in Suspected Crohn's Disease

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Evaluation of the small intestine for inflammation has traditionally relied on small-bowel follow-through (SBFT), but multiple studies have demonstrated its low diagnostic accuracy. Capsule endoscopy (CE) transmits high-quality images of the small intestinal mucosa; it can be used to visualize the entire length of the small bowel and much of the mucosa. We compared the diagn

Change in Cell Death Markers During (177)Lu-mAb Radioimmunotherapy-Induced Rejection of Syngeneic Rat Colon Carcinoma.

Abstract Purpose: To monitor cell death in tumors during the rejection process after treatment with an antibody radiolabeled with a β-emitter. Methods: Tumors during rejection after treatment with (177)Lu-labeled antibody BR96 and after administration of unlabeled BR96 were compared with untreated tumors from the same immunocompetent syngeneic rat tumor model. Cell death was monitored with the ter

Intraspecific variation and taphonomic alteration in the Cambrian (Furongian) agnostoid Lotagnostus amerkanus: new information from China

The concept of the agnostoid arthropod species Lotagnostus americanus (Billings, 1860), which has been reported from numerous localities in the upper Furongian Series (Cambrian) of Laurentia, Gondwana, Baltica, Avalonia, and Siberia, is reviewed with emphasis on morphologic and taphonomic information afforded by large collections from Hunan in South China, Xinjiang in Northwest China, and Zhejiang

First crystal-structure determination of chromites from an acapulcoite and ordinary chondrites

We report the first crystal-structure determinations of chromites from an acapulcoite and from ordinary chondrites. Cell edges range from 8.3212 (3) to 8.3501 (1) angstrom, while the oxygen positional parameters are in the range 0.2624 (3) to 0.26298 (9). Their compositions show they are very close to the chromite end-member FeCr2O4 with limited Al and Mg content. Titanium oxide content exceeds 1

Tyrosine kinase inhibitors improve long-term outcome of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for adult patients with Philadelphia chromosome positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

This study aimed to determine the impact of tyrosine-kinase inhibitors given pre- and post-allogeneic stem cell transplantation on long term outcome of patients allografted for Philadelphia chromosome-positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia. This retrospective analysis from the Acute Leukemia Working Party of EBMT included 473 de novo Philadelphia chromosome-positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia pat

Commercial motorcycle drivers' perceptions of risk and road safety in urban Nigeria: an explorative study.

Road traffic injury is a great public health challenge with an emerging trend of increasing rates and high mortality involving commercial motorcycles in Nigeria. A qualitative approach was used with 10 in-depth interviews conducted to explore the risk perceptions of commercial motorcyclists in Ibadan, Nigeria. The data analysis using manifest and latent content analysis resulted in an overarching

Analysis of midwifery students' written reflections to evaluate progression in learning during clinical practice at birthing units.

Written daily reflections during clinical practice on birthing units have been used during several years in midwifery education at Lund University, Sweden. However, the usefulness of these reflections for evaluation of progression in learning and professional development of students has to date not been evaluated. In order to analyse written reflections, two taxonomies developed by Bloom and Pette

Interior aesthetics: an experience-focused approach for the design of brand-specific automotive identity

In this research, two objectives were pursued. Firstly, to develop an experience-focused approach to design, based on a framework for perceptual product experience, and, secondly, to test and verify the proposed methodology through an interior design study of the Hulme.F1 supercar. In the process, experience design criteria were developed, which served creative and evaluative purposes. The final d

The influences of the transfer method and particle surface chemistry on the dispersion of nanoparticles in nanocomposites

The synthesis via in situ polymerization and characterization of nanocomposites (NCs) made from silica (SiO2) nanoparticles in a methyl methacrylate (MMA) monomer matrix is reported. We first investigate the transfer of well-defined spherical silica nanoparticles (NPs) (average radius R = 24.2 +/- 3.2 nm) into the monomer solvent. We study the influence of two transfer methods and different surfac

Perfusion MRI of brain tumours: a comparative study of pseudo-continuous arterial spin labelling and dynamic susceptibility contrast imaging

The purpose of this study was to compare the non-invasive 3D pseudo-continuous arterial spin labelling (PC ASL) technique with the clinically established dynamic susceptibility contrast perfusion magnetic resonance imaging (DSC-MRI) for evaluation of brain tumours. A prospective study of 28 patients with contrast-enhancing brain tumours was performed at 3 T using DSC-MRI and PC ASL with whole-brai

Electrochemical communication between microbial cells and electrodes via osmium redox systems.

Electrochemical communication between micro-organisms and electrodes is the integral and fundamental part of BESs (bioelectrochemical systems). The immobilization of bacterial cells on the electrode and ensuring efficient electron transfer to the electrode via a mediator are decisive features of mediated electrochemical biosensors. Notably, mediator-based systems are essential to extract electrons

Two-center potential correlations and its use to determine effective ion-ion interactions and dielectric permittivities in dipolar solvents

General expressions for two-center electrostatic potential correlations and its use to determine (i) the effective interaction between simple ions in a dipolar solvent and (ii) the dielectric permittivity of the solvent are proposed. Such two-center potential correlations were determined from Monte Carlo simulations of spherically confined dipolar particles embedded in a dielectric medium describe

A new spectrophotometric method for improved indirect measurement of low levels of vitellogenin using malachite green

Vitellogenin (VTG) is a well-known biomarker for endocrine disruption and the measurement of alkali-labile protein bound phosphate (ALP) has been used as an indirect quantification method for VTG in fish, clam and mussel. One limitation of the ALP method has been the insufficient detection limit but with the method presented here this obstacle has been overcome, enabling measurement in fish specie

Dendronised polymer architectures for fuel cell membranes

Multi-step synthetic pathways to low-ion exchange capacity (IEC) polysulfone (PSU) with sulfonic acid functionalized aliphatic dendrons and sulfonated comb-type PSU structures are developed and investigated in a comparative study as non-fluorinated proton exchange membrane (PEM) candidates. In each case the side chains are synthesized and introduced in their sulfonated form onto an azide-functiona

Control and understanding of kink formation in InAs-InP heterostructure nanowires.

Nanowire heterostructures are of special interest for band structure engineering due to an expanded range of defect-free material combinations. However, the higher degree of freedom in nanowire heterostructure growth comes at the expense of challenges related to nanowire-seed particle interactions, such as undesired composition, grading and kink formation. To better understand the mechanisms of ki
