Inflamed in vitro retina : Cytotoxic neuroinflammation and galectin-3 expression
Background Disease progression in retinal neurodegeneration is strongly correlated to immune cell activation, which may have either a neuroprotective or neurotoxic effect. Increased knowledge about the immune response profile and retinal neurodegeneration may lead to candidate targets for treatments. Therefore, we have used the explanted retina as a model to explore the immune response and express

Acetic acid as a decontamination method for sink drains in a nosocomial outbreak of metallo-β-lactamase-producing Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Background Pseudomonas aeruginosa may colonize water systems via biofilm formation. In hospital environments, contaminated sinks have been associated with nosocomial transmission. Here we describe a prolonged outbreak of a metallo-β-lactamase-producing P. aeruginosa (Pae-MBL) associated with sink drains, and propose a previously unreported decontamination method with acetic acid. Aim To describe a
Transmitter-specific subsets of sensory elements in the prosobranch osphradium.
The osphradium is a putative chemosensory organ of aquatic molluscs. Previously, we identified two distinct types of primary sensory neurons in the osphradial ganglion of freshwater pulmonates, one immunoreactive to leucine-enkephalin (LEnk-ir) and another to FMRFamide (FMRFa-ir). In addition, NADPH diaphorase (NADPHd)-positive elements apparently producing nitric oxide (NO) were demonstrated in t
Sensory structures associated with the cuticle of Hutchinsoniella macracantha (Crustacea, Cephalocarida)
The body cuticle of the cephalocarid crustacean Hutchinsoniella macracantha Sanders, 1955, carries two types of small setae which differ in their external shape and number of ciliated sensory cells. It also has two types of pores, one being a gland opening, the other containing the tip of a cilium. The setae and the pore type containing a ciliated sensory cell are considered chemosensory organs.
Serotonin- and FMRFamide-immunoreactive nerve elements in the chiton, Lepidopleurus asellus (Mollusca, Polyplacophora)
The distribution of serotonin-like and FMRFamide-like immunoreactive (5HT-ir and FMRFa-ir, respectively) neurons in the nervous system of the chiton Lepidopleurus asellus (Mollusca, Polyplacophora) was studied using an immunocytochemical technique. The neurons were distributed in characteristic patterns in the central nervous system, the 5HT-ir neurons predominating in the ventral (pedal) cords an
High-frequency InGaAs tri-gate MOSFETs with fmax of 400 GHz
Extremely scaled down tri-gate RF metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) utilising lateral nanowires as the channel, with gate length and nanowire width both of 20 nm are reported. These devices exhibit simultaneous extrapolated ft and fmax of 275 and 400 GHz at VDS = 0.5 V, which is the largest combined ft and fmax, as well as the largest fmax reported for all III-V MOSFETs.
Big Science Transformed : Science, Politics and Organization in Europe and the United States
This book analyses the emergence of a transformed Big Science in Europe and the United States, using both historical and sociological perspectives. It shows how technology-intensive natural sciences grew to a prominent position in Western societies during the post-World War II era, and how their development cohered with both technological and social developments. At the helm of post-war science ar
Hypoparathyroidism after total thyroidectomy in patients with previous gastric bypass
Purpose: Case reports suggest that patients with previous gastric bypass have an increased risk of severe hypocalcemia after total thyroidectomy, but there are no population-based studies. The prevalence of gastric bypass before thyroidectomy and the risk of hypocalcemia after thyroidectomy in patients with previous gastric bypass were investigated. Methods: By cross-linking The Scandinavian Quali
Hybrid SSF/SHF Processing of SO2 Pretreated Wheat Straw—Tuning Co-fermentation by Yeast Inoculum Size and Hydrolysis Time
Wheat straw is one of the main agricultural residues of interest for bioethanol production. This work examines conversion of steam-pretreated wheat straw (using SO2 as a catalyst) in a hybrid process consisting of a short enzymatic prehydrolysis step and a subsequent simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) step with a xylose-fermenting strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. A successful
N-Conjugate prodrugs of galiellalactone
A series of amine adducts of the fungal metabolite galiellalactone (1) were prepared by reacting galiellalactone with different secondary amines via a Lewis acid catalyzed Michael addition. The adducts were assayed for in vitro effects toward prostate cancer cell lines and found to possess a similar ability to inhibit cell proliferation as galiellalactone itself. It was found that the Michael addi
Is Distraction an Adaptive or Maladaptive Strategy for Emotion Regulation? A Person-Oriented Approach
Distraction is an emotion regulation strategy that has an ambiguous status within cognitive-behavior therapy. According to some treatment protocols it is counterproductive, whereas according to other protocols it is seen as a quite useful strategy. The main purpose of the present study was to test the hypothesis that distraction is adaptive when combined with active acceptance, but maladaptive whe
Advanced multiconfiguration methods for complex atoms : I. Energies and wave functions
Multiconfiguration wave function expansions combined with configuration interaction methods are a method of choice for complex atoms where atomic state functions are expanded in a basis of configuration state functions. Combined with a variational method such as the multiconfiguration Hartree-Fock (MCHF) or multiconfiguration Dirac-Hartree-Fock (MCDHF), the associated set of radial functions can b
Finite element simulation of rate-dependent magneto-active polymer response
This contribution is concerned with the embedding of constitutive relations for magneto-active polymers (MAP) into finite element simulations. To this end, a recently suggested, calibrated, and validated material model for magneto-mechanically coupled and rate-dependent MAP response is briefly summarized in its continuous and algorithmic settings. Moreover, the strongly coupled field equations of

Radiography on wheels arrives to nursing homes - an economic assessment of a new health care technology in southern Sweden
Rationale, aims and objectives: The process of transferring older, vulnerable adults from an elder care facility to the hospital for medical care can be an emotionally and physically stressful experience. The recent development of modern mobile radiography may help to ease this anxiety by allowing for evaluation in the nursing home itself. Up until this point, no health economic evaluation of the
Effects of protein malnutrition on tolerance to helminth infection
Infection tolerance is the ability of a host to limit the health effects of a given parasite load. A few recent studies have demonstrated genetic variation for tolerance, but little is known about how environmental factors affect tolerance. Here, we used the intestinal nematode Heligmosomoides polygyrus in laboratory mice to test for effects of protein malnutrition on tolerance. We performed an ex
