Constant coefficient linear multistep methods with step density control

In linear multistep methods with variable step size, the method's coefficients are functions of the step size ratios. The coefficients therefore need to be recomputed on every step to retain the method's proper order of convergence. An alternative approach is to use step density control to make the method adaptive. If the step size sequence is smooth, the method can use constant coefficients witho

Adaptive responses to static conditions in nutrient-rich cultures of luminous Ralstonia eutropha

The lux-gene fused Ralstonia eutropha, when adapting to static conditions, causes stratification of air-exposed and nutrient-rich cultures at above 0.15 mg biomass ml(-1). The O-2 respiring biofilm (luminous neuston) phase, along with the dark sub-neustonic suspension phase, develops within 5-60 min. The instability of the biphasic static culture was identified as a reason for occasionally observa

Development of high temporally and spatially (three-dimensional) resolved formaldehyde measurements in combustion environments

In the present article a multi-YAG laser cluster and a framing camera have been applied for ultrahigh framing rate and three-dimensional measurements of formaldehyde distribution in flames and engines. The measurement technique utilizes a laser/detection system which has been adopted for the generation of eight laser pulses at 355 nm. By combining these lasers with a framing camera, short movies s

Long-term N addition effects on the C mineralization and DOC production in mor humus under spruce

This study was based on laboratory incubations of mor humus from two N fertilized stands of Norway spruce in Sweden (Skogaby and Strasan), which had received repeated N additions (100 kg N ha(-1) yr(-1) as (NH4)(2)SO4 at Skogaby and 35, 73 and 108 kg ha(-1) yr(-1), as NH4NO3 at Strasan) during 8 and 24-29 years, respectively. The aim was to investigate long-term N effects on the mineralization of

God livskvalitet efter hjärtoperation. Bedöms lika av patient och anhörig

In a series of 83 patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting for angina, perceived QOL (quality of life) was rated by the patients and their spouses, preoperatively and at two and 12 months postoperatively, using the SWED-QUAL instrument. One year after surgery, QOL had improved to a level which might be expected of a normal population comparable in age and gender distribution. Good corre

Nonattendance in mammographic screening: a study of intraurban differences in Malmo, Sweden, 1990-1994

Mammographic screening may reduce breast cancer mortality. Not all women, however, come for examination. The objective in this study from Malmo has been to assess extent to which the rate of nonattendance varies between residential areas with different sociodemographic profiles. The study is based on 32,605 women, 45 to 68 years old and living in 17 areas, who between 1990 and 1994 were invited to

The parallel process in clinical supervision with a schizophrenic client.

The authors analyze a male nurse's account of how he experienced his interaction with a female schizophrenic client during sessions of systematic clinical supervision. Notes taken during 15 sessions were analyzed by means of open coding. The analysis revealed the importance of being aware of the parallel process that occurs among the client, the primary nurse, and the unit staff.

Interaction and association analysis of a type 1 diabetes susceptibility locus on chromosome 5q11-q13 and the 7q32 chromosomal region in Scandinavian families

We have previously reported suggestive linkage to chromosome 5p13-q13 in type 1 diabetic families. ISL1, a transcription factor involved in pancreas development, maps to this region. Sequencing of the ISL1 gene in patients and control subjects identified seven single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and one microsatellite in noncoding regions. Four haplotypes formed by six of these SNPs and one mic

Cerebrovascular serotonergic receptors mediating vasoconstriction: further evidence for the existence of 5-HT2 receptors in rat and 5-HT1-like receptors in guinea-pig basilar arteries

Pharmacological experiments were carried out on isolated basilar arteries (BA) from the brain vasculature of guinea-pig and rat in order to characterize post-junctional serotonergic receptors mediating contraction by the use of selective agonists and antagonists. The sensitivity to 5-HT was higher, but the intrinsic activity lower, in guinea-pig compared to rat vessels. The contractile potency of

Measurements of ATP in forest humus

The measurement of ATP as an estimate of microbial biomass C in humus was studied. Three different acid extractants, H2SO4, TCA and H3PO4 were compared, as well as two different buffers, Tris and arsenate. No difference in extraction efficiency was found when the light output was converted to ATP content using internal ATP standards, but the different extraction agents and buffers influenced the l

Extracellular MUC3 mucin secretion follows adherence of Lactobacillus strains to intestinal epithelial cells in vitro

Background: Mucins are large complex glycoproteins that protect intestinal mucosal surfaces by limiting access of environmental matter to their epithelial cells. Several mucin genes have been described, including MUC3 that is a membrane associated mucin of the small intestine. Increased MUC3 mRNA transcription is induced by incubation of intestinal epithelial cells with a Lactobacillus strain know

Band Structure in 79Y and the Question of T=O Pairing

Gamma rays in the N=Z + 1 nucleus Y-79 were identified using the reaction Si-28(Fe-54, p2n)Y-79 at a 200 MeV beam energy and an experimental setup consisting of an array of Ge detectors and the Recoil Mass Spectrometer at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. With the help of additional gamma-gamma coincidence data obtained with Gammasphere, these gamma rays were found to form a strongly coupled rotation

The isospin dependent p-n multiplets in the region of doubly magic Sn-100

Experimental data on p-n multiplets appearing in the nuclei near double-magic Sn-100 accesible in heavy-ion fusion-evaporation experiments have been analyzed. Proton-rich nuclei in this region have been investigated using the NORDBALL array. A Ni-58 beams at energies of 270 Mev on Fe-54 and 261 MeV on Cr-50 targets were used. Reaction channel separation was achieved with a 4 pi charged particle mu
