Variability of shore and shoreline evolution

Shore and shoreline evolution both due to natural and human-induced causes or factors can be variable over a wide range of different temporal and/or spatial scales. Our capability to understand and especially predict this variability is still limited. This can lead to misinterpretation of coastal change information, which hampers informed decision making and the subsequent design and implementatio

Limited protective effect of the CCR5 Delta 32/CCR5 Delta 32 genotype on human immunodeficiency virus infection incidence in a cohort of patients with hemophilia and selection for genotypic X4 virus

The relationship among CCR5 genotype, cytomegalovirus infection, and disease progression and death was studied among 159 human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients with hemophilia. One patient (0.6%) had the CCR5Delta32/CCR5Delta32 genotype (which occurs in similar to2% of the Scandinavian population) and a rapid disease course. His HIV V3 region contained genotypic features attributable

Comparison of quantitative ultrasound measurements in calcaneus with DXA and SXA at other skeletal sites: a population-based study on 280 children aged 11-16 years

We performed ultrasound measurements (QUS) of the calcaneus in a population-based setting on 280 healthy children, aged 11-16 years, from a small urban area in southern Sweden. The results are compared with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) measurements in the total body, the lumbar spine and the hip, as well as single-energy X-ray absorptiometry (SXA) of the forearm. Normative data and corre

On the simulation of iterated Itô integrals

We consider algorithms for simulation of iterated Itô integrals with application to simulation of stochastic differential equations. The fact that the iterated Itô integral I_{ij}(t_n,t_n+h)=\int_{t_n}^{t_n+h} \int_{t_n}^{s} dW_{i}(u)dW_{j}(s) conditioned on W_i(t_n+h)-W_i(t_n) and W_j(t_n+h)-W_j(t_n), has an infinitely divisible distribution is utilised for the simultaneous simulation of $I_{ij}(

Ergonomics of Protective Clothing

The European Directives on personal protective devices have increased the interest in protective and functional properties of work clothing and intensified standardisation work as well as stimulated research in areas with limited knowledge. There is a long tradition of research and information exchange in the Nordic countries on the subject. The NOrdisk KOrdineringsgruppe om BEskyttelseskläder som

Extensive cytogenetic heterogeneity in a benign retroperitoneal schwannoma

A benign retroperitoneal schwannoma from a patient without prior exposure to radiotherapy or chemotherapy was analyzed by chromosome banding after short-term culture. An extensive intratumor heterogeneity in the form of 29 karyotypically related as well as unrelated clones was found. The aberrant clones were diploid or near-diploid and displayed both numerical and structural changes. All chromosom

Continuity-based interfacing of models for wastewater systems described by Petersen matrices

In this paper the Petersen and composition matrices that modellers are now familiar with are used as a basis to construct interfacing models between subsystems considered in wastewater treatment. Starting from continuity considerations and a set of transformation reactions between components used in the two models of the subsystems to be interfaced, a set of linear algebraic equations needs to be

On the tail of the waiting time in a Markov-modulated M/G/1 queue

We show that the "exponential decay parameter" of the waiting time in a Markov-modulated M/G/1 queue is no larger than that of the corresponding M/G/1 queue with "averaged" parameters, and we give a necessary and sufficient condition for equality. We also explore the effect of speeding up the modulation process. A key tool is a Markov-modulated fluid model.

Capillary-induced phase separation in mixed polymer solutions. A lattice mean-field calculation study

The formation of a capillary phase in segregating mixed polymer solutions confined between two planar walls is modeled by using a lattice mean-field theory for flexible polymers in solution. A capillary-induced phase separation (CIPS) may appear in systems where the two polymer components display different preference for the wall, the preference being either of energetic or entropic origin. A long

Inter-rater reliability of an oral assessment guide for elderly patients residing in a rehabilitation ward

The aim of this study was to test the inter-rater reliability of a revised oral assessment guide (ROAG) for patients residing in a geriatric rehabilitation ward. A consecutive sample of 140 patients was recruited for the study. Oral assessments were performed for 133 newly admitted patients by one registered nurse (RN) during a period of six months. A dental hygienist (DH) carried out 103 oral ass

IdeS, a novel streptococcal cysteine proteinase with unique specificity for immunoglobulin G.

Recent work from several laboratories has demonstrated that proteolytic mechanisms significantly contribute to the molecular interplay between Streptococcus pyogenes, an important human pathogen, and its host. Here we describe the identification, purification and characterization of a novel extracellular cysteine proteinase produced by S.pyogenes. This enzyme, designated IdeS for Immunoglobulin G-
