Beating the training obsession: making capacity development for disaster risk management matter

The last ten years have seen a sharp increase in externally supported capacity development initiatives for disaster risk management. However, not all of them have generated sustainable results. The purpose of this paper is to scrutinize the current focus on training as the main tool for capacity development in the context of disaster risk management, and to argue for the necessity to address capac

A Central Rapidity Straw Tracker and Measurements on Cryogenic Components for the Large Hadron Collider

This thesis is divided into two parts in which two different aspects of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) Project are discussed. The first part describes the design of a transition radiation tracker (TRT) for the inner detector in ATLAS. In particular, the barrel part was studied in detail. The barrel TRT consists of 52 544 1.5-m-long proportional tubes (straws), parallel to the beam axis and each

Proton-Induced X-ray Emission Spectroscopy in Elemental Trace Analysis

Using protons in the MeV range as excitation source and a high resolution Si(Li) detector,X-ray emission spectroscopy is shown to be capable of analyzing many elements with Z > 15 simultaneously at the 10-12 g level. This work discusses a theoretical lower limit of detection at moderate proton energies and gives examples of possible applications: analysis of the elemental composition of air-borne

Treatment of Skin Wounds with Cell Transplantation and Gene Transfer

A large number of different wound coverings have been used in order to improve the wound microenvironment, and thus accelerate repair. Since almost two centuries, clinicians and researchers have developed techniques for skin transplantation. In the past several decades, growth factors have been used as tools for accelerating and modifying skin wound repair. The experimental work in thi

Repeated sets or single set of resistance training - A systematic review

The aim of the study was to review studies concerning single-set and multiple-set resistance training. Twenty-six articles were found, 19 randomized controlled trials and seven studies without randomization process. Out of the 26 articles, 11 showed similar increases in strength when comparing number of sets, mostly one set compared with three sets. Eight of the articles showed a greater increase

System Identification of Homogenous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) Engine Dynamics

Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) combustion lacksdirect ignition timing control, instead the auto ignition depends on the operatingcondition. Since auto ignition of a homogeneous mixture is very sensitive tooperating condition a fast combustion timing control is necessary for reliableoperation, the ignition timing control design requiring appropriate modelsand system output variables

Transmission Electron Microscopy of III-V Nanowires and Nanotrees

Bland annat har vi funnit att de lamellära tvillingar som ofta observeras i III-V nanotrådar växta i <111>B riktningarna tenderar att begränsas av eIn this work, the morphology and crystal structure of epitaxial semiconductor nanowire structures grown by metal-organic vapour phase epitaxy (MOVPE) are studied by electron microscopy methods. In particular, the three-dimensional structure of nanowires and nanotrees has been characterised by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and multi-sli

Effects of the Spin-Orbit Interaction on Transport and Optical Properties of III-V Semiconductor Quantum Wells

Effects of the intrinsic electron spin-orbit interaction on transport and optical properties of III-V semiconductor quantum wells have been studied theoretically. It is shown that due to crystal anisotropy of this interaction, the weak localization magnetoresistance in a magnetic field parallel to interfaces is very sensitive to the epitaxy growth direction and also to the orientation of the magn

Incorporating Environmental Aspects in Transport Purchasing

The problem addressed in this thesis is how to account for environmental aspects when purchasing freight transports. This problem is addressed from a transport purchasing perspective. The result of the research is a model for how transport purchasers can incorporate environmental aspects when purchasing freight transports. This mode! is built on two tools and a work process. The first too! is a st
