Generating Real Business Value: Transcending the Socio-Technical Dimension.

Changes in technologies which have put computing power on the desktop over the past 25 years give an impression of increased empowerment for the end-user when compared to previous generations of hardware and software. However, in practice, latest developments in desktop computing and related technologies have led to more and more centralized control of ‘end-users’ workspaces. This phenomenon leads

A 0.28-0.8 V 320 fW D-latch for Sub-VT Memories in 65 nm CMOS

The design of an ultra-low-leakage latch, suitable for subthreshold standard-cell based memories in 65nm CMOS is presented. Various latch architectures are compared in terms of leakage, area and speed. The most leakage-efficient architecture is optimized by transistor stacking and channel length stretching. The final design is supplemented with a 3-state output buffer to provide low-leakage read f

An electrochemical-cantilever hybrid sensor for metal ions

In this work we have demonstrated a peptide functionalized cantilever sensor with integrated electrochemical capabilities. Silicon nitride cantilevers with gold electrodes are functionalized with the chelating peptide Cys-Gly-Gly-His (CGGH) to capture Cu2+ ions from solution. Upon binding the copper ion the peptide folds, creating steric hindrance and causing compressive stress in the monolayer, d

Bacterial Terminal Oxidases. Studies in Bacillus subtilis

The final step in aerobic respiratory pathways is catalyzed by terminal oxidases. Bacteria generally have two or more terminal oxidases. Aerobically grown Bacillus subtilis synthesize three terminal oxidases: one cytochrome c oxidase, cytochrome caa3 and two quinol oxidases, cytochrome aa3 and cytochrome bd. In addition, a fourth cytochrome of bd-type has been predicted from the genome sequence. C

Navigating Troubled Waters : An analysis of how urban water regimes in the global South reproduce inequality

This research is an attempt to conceptualize the underlying forces behind persistent and ubiquitous problems of inequality in access to water in cities of the global south. Inequality in water access is hypothesized to result from urban water regimes that tend to prioritize the right to water access or to provide preferential terms of access for some groups in society, while marginalizing others.

The UspA1 protein of Moraxella catarrhalis induces CEACAM-1-dependent apoptosis in alveolar epithelial cells.

Moraxella catarrhalis is a major cause of exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and emphysema. M. catarrhalis–specific UspA1 and the epithelial carcinoembryonic antigen-related cell adhesion molecule (CEACAM1) were required to induce apoptosis. M. catarrhalis–induced apoptosis was significantly enhanced in HeLa cells stably transfected with CEACAM1, compared with HeLa cells

Neuropsychological test performance in Swedish multiple chemical sensitivity patients – an exploratory study

To address the hypothesis of brain dysfunction as a component of the multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) syndrome, a neuropsychological battery comprising 8 tests was given to 17 Swedish MCS patients and 34 demographically matched controls. Across the 6 tests used as indicators of brain impairment, comprising a total of 17 test variables, the MCS group performed poorer only in a complex reaction t
