Dental amalgam, low-dose exposure to mercury, and urinary proteins in young Swedish men
Chronic exposure to inorganic mercury can cause kidney injury. Evidence gained from occupational medicine indicates that individuals who are exposed to only environmental sources, including amalgam tooth fillings, are at very little risk. Animal experiments, however, have revealed glomerular lesions of immunologic origin after low-dose exposure to inorganic mercury. In this study, the association

Artificial photosynthesis: towards functional mimics of photosystem II?
This paper describes the initial development of a project aiming at the construction of functional mimics of the oxygen-evolving complex of photosystem II, coupled to photoinduced charge separation. Biomimetic electron donors, manganese complexes and tyrosine, have been linked to a Ru(II)-polypyridine photosensitiser. Oxidation of the donors by intramolecular electron transfer from the photo-oxidi

Atmospheric transport of chlorinated hydrocarbons to Sweden 1985 compared to 1973
The atmospheric fallout of DDT and DDE (ΣDDT) over Sweden has decreased during the last decade. Today long-range transport from southern sources outside the country dominates the inflow. This was reflected in a decreasing south-to-north gradient of the compounds in atmospheric deposition and in the lower atomosphere. The fallout of PCBs was similar in 1984–1985 and 1972–1973, and today local conta
Neck vibration causes short-latency electromyographic activation of lower leg muscles in postural reactions of the standing human.
To study how quickly cervical proprioceptive information induced muscular responses in the lower leg to control posture in the standing human we investigated lower leg muscle electromyography and force-plate data from 10 healthy normal subjects, when perturbed by posterior neck muscle vibration. At the onset of vibration the tibialis anterior muscle was activated at latencies of 70-100 ms whilst t
The diameter of the common femoral artery in healthy human: influence of sex, age, and body size
PURPOSE: To determine the relevance of dilatations of the common femoral artery (CFA), knowledge of the normal CFA diameter is essential. The diameter of the CFA in healthy male and female subjects of different ages was investigated. METHODS: The diameter of the CFA was measured in 122 healthy volunteers (59 male, 63 female; 8 to 81 years of age) with echo-tracking B-mode ultrasound scan. The infl

Strain effects on individual quantum dots: Dependence of cap layer thickness
We have studied the effects of strain on individual self-assembled quantum dots (QDs) exemplified by InP dots embedded in GaInP. The quantum dot sample was etched from the top and in this way the amount of capping material was reduced. In a sequence of etch cycles, the cap layer was thinned, and the photoluminescence from several individual QDs could be followed as a function of cap layer thicknes
Novel peptide surface for reversible immobilization of concanavalin A
Concanavalin A (Con A) was spontaneously adsorbed on polymyxin B surface. This peptide-lectin interaction was strong, K-D = 1-9 X 10(-10), based predominantly on creation of hydrophobic bonds, and was completely reversible. Concanavalin A on polymyxin B (PmB) retained higher binding capacity for yeast mannan, compared with covalently immobilized lectin. Kinetics of mannan-concanavalin A interactio
Planktic cyanobacteria from freshwater localities in ThuaThien-Hue province, Vietnam. II. Algal biomass and microcystin production
A survey of cyanobacteria was carried out from February to August of 2004 along the Huong River and Hoamy Reservoir which supply part of the City of Hue, Vietnam with drinking water: also at some localities in the vicinity of the City of Hue. Quantitative analyses and screening for microcystin by ELISA and HPLC were done both in natural samples and in cultured cyanobacteria. The total biomass of c
X-ray photoelectron diffraction investigation of the cleavage plane in IT-transition metal dichalcogenides
We present a detailed study of the three members of the 1 T-transition metal dichalcogenides: TiSe2, TaSe2 and TaS2 by means of the X-ray photoelectron diffraction combined with single-scattering simulations. Our simulations of different surface terminations and their comparison with the measured diffraction patterns allow to determine that the cleavage occurs within the van der Waals gap. Singles
Cardiac dysfunction in mild primary hyperparathyroidism assessed by radio-nuclide angiography and echocardiography before and after parathyroidectomy
Background.. Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is associated with increased cardiovascular morbidity for reasons that are incompletely understood. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the effects of parathyroidectomy on cardiac function especially in patients with mild PHPT Methods. Fifty patients with mild PHPT (serum calcium, 2.55 to 2.95 mmol/L) were randomized to parathyroidectomy eit
Harmonic morphisms from the Grassmannians and their non-compact duals
In this paper we give a unified framework for the construction of complex valued harmonic morphisms from the real, complex and quaternionic Grassmannians and their non-compact duals. This gives a positive answer to the corresponding open existence problem in the real and quaternionic cases.

Long term follow up of chronic hepatitis B virus infection in intravenous drug abusers and homosexual men
Long term follow up of 16 homosexual men and 78 intravenous drug abusers who were chronic carriers of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) showed fundamental differences between the two groups. Viral replication, expressed by the presence of hepatitis B e antigen, lasted for four years or more in 10 out of 14 (71%) of the homosexual men whereas it was not present in 43 out of 73 (59%) of the drug a
Review of Mårten Björkgren, Drama och dialog.
Bättre än ”drama” hade ”spänning” passat i huvudrubriken. För första gången har otry
Structure of Thallium(Iii) Chloride, Bromide, and Cyanide Complexes in Aqueous-Solution
The structures of the hydrated thallium(III) halide and pseudohalide complexes, [TlX(n)(OH2)(m)]((3-n)+), X = Cl, Br, CN, in aqueous solution have been studied by a combination of X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (XAFS), large-angle X-ray scattering (LAXS), and vibrational spectroscopic (Raman and IR) techniques including far-infrared studies of aqueous solutions and some solid phases
