Current issues in pictorial semiotics. Lecture four: On Semiotic Ecology. Indexicality and Structure in Pictures and the Perceptual World
The argument of our third lecture showed that iconicity could only be saved from the critical arguments advanced by Bierman and Goodman by means of introducing a properly structured common sense world. In this lecture, we will first consider to what extent the linguistic model may still be helpful, and in which respects it is misleading. Then the necessary furnishing of the common sense world, whi
An Experiment of Integrated Technologies in Digital Archaeology : Creation of New Pipelines to Increase the Perception of Archaeological Data
Abstract Digital visualization has gone through a revolutionary decade. Compared to other fields where these methods have been applied, archaeology has been, and still is, more resistant to integrating tools and instruments able to describe materials and scenarios with high resolution. This is partly due to the archaeological misconception of high cost of scientific equipment and the complexity in
Mechanisms of acidosis-mediated ischemic brain damage: Histopathology and pathophysiology
Exaggerated acidosis due to preischemic hyperglycemia shortens the maturation time for cell death and turns selective neuronal damage into pannecrosis. Some issues concerning the mechanisms are yet to be clarified. The present study was designed to define critical thresholds of plasma glucose, to investigate the influence of preischemic hyperglycemia on ion transients, to evaluate the role of calc

Laminar Burning Velocity and Development of a Chemical Kinetic Model for Small Oxygenated Fuels
KoncentratioThe thesis work was performed with the aim of increasing knowledge and understanding of the combustion of oxygenated fuels and intermediates. This was accomplished in two steps: experimental measurements of the laminar burning velocity to expand current databases and development of a reaction mechanism. In the first part of the project, the laminar burning velocity of oxygenated fuels and interme
MONETARY REGIMES AND ENDOGENOUS WAGE CONTRACTS: SWEDEN 1908-1995
We examine Gray´s theory of endogenous length of wage contracts and inflation indexation, using a uniquely long data set of blue-collar worker collective agreements in Sweden 1908-1995. Volatile monetary regimes, i. e. regimes with large macroeconomic uncertainty, are associated with short length and inflation indexed contracts. We also find inertia in changes in contract characteristics to change

Automating MALDI Sample Plate Loading
We describe the design and implementation of a generic robotic solution to automate the loading of MALDI sample plates into a mass spectrometer. The soft- and hardware aspects are described together with the various safety issues that need to be addressed. The automation increases thoughput by a factor of between 5- and 80-fold.

Phylogenomic Analysis of Vertebrate Evolution
The field of phylogenomics has emerged during the last five years, as the number of fully or partially sequenced genomes has increased rapidly. Using whole genomes for phylogenetic studies greatly increases the accuracy of the trees determined, and can potentially resolve phylogenetic questions that could not be resolved bu studies using only a few gene sequences. In the current thesis selected p
Who Controls Carbon Emissions from Transport and Who Cares? Investigating the Monitoring of Co2 from a Logistics Service Provider’s Perspective
This article explores the environmental impact of logistics service provider (LPS) activities in the light of increased customer priorities and the fragmentation of the industry. The research is based on a narrative literature review, an interview study, a case survey, and three in-depth case studies. A framework on sustainability challenges in supply chains derived from the literature is used to

Patterns of verb usage in Swedish children with SLI: an application of recent theories
Data from several languages, including Swedish, have shown that children with specific language impairment (SLI) have particular difficulties with verb morphology. In the present study, the verb morphology of six Swedish children with SLI was further explored in longitudinal and cross-sectional data. It was found that the children with SLI had significant problems with the use of auxiliary and mod
